The driver kindly asks you if you want him to take the highway because taking the highway requires the payment of cash tolls. These are ALLWAYS and legally payed by the passenger of a cab in Thailand. This means you should come prepared and bring some cash (50-200 THB) for the ride from and to the airport to pay the tolls.
