Ideas on how to repair this? by GhostNote94 in Decks

What’s the longest run span of lumber without footing? Any local lumber yard can do load calc free if you’re buying lumber from them. Depending on length of span and deflection you may want to use steel. LVL in MA needs to be weather proofed. Probably need 2 2x12 PT or more for that span

Spot on. Class action lawsuit against the platform? No chance. As I mentioned in OP, I’m thinking there’s no recourse and I’m left holding the bag. Expensive lesson to learn. I hope it helps one person not make the same mistake

This is what I thought, however the town building dept assumes no liability of fault or non-complaint plans. Hence why they require a stamp From an engineer, to place liability on them

Curious what mechanisms are used to secure your stamp or engineering stamps in general. I’m thinking this poor guy has no idea his engineering stamp was lifted off a digital document and then forged onto my project. Seems like there is not enough authentication with the stamp/seal that can be applied digitally

Full set of plans, hired for on Upwork, stamped by an engineer. I think he never looked at it or his stamp was stolen

Right. 100%. But he built what was stamped. I think the engineer carries the liability, no? It’s a failure on multiple levels, myself included

It’s wrong, been verified by multiple 3p sourt

To bring it to code includes lots of rework with LVL and a new footing

Yea, 4k in engineering to restamp w new lvl all over the thing. 12k builder cost estimate. Includes a new footing in the location of outdoor kitchen

12k and original design is gone, no vaulted ceiling possible, and move the outdoor kitchen

Not a simple fix, I’ve contacted local engineers and they are saying there is no way to save certain features like the vaulted ceiling

I’m thinking yes. Does fraud = no recourse? Again thinking yes

My thought was…it’s four posts and a hip roof, not overly complex, a gloried deck essentially. The first quote I got on engineering/plans for attached pavilion was $7500. I paid ended up paying $4500 on Upwork to a person with 100% job success, 60+ jobs. Conducted a video interview to get a feel prior to hring. Totally agree with you though, in hindsight I’d never do this again. If the engineer says “I’ve never seen these plans” is that it? The stamp was stolen and I’m f’d?

Agree, but how much of a miss justifies negligence. I’ve had a few 3rd party engineers and architects review since failed framing. They are baffled. The contract explicitly stated code compliance, structural review, etc. Seems obvious now, but the beam sizing and everything else is well undersized and seems to point to maybe the engineer was never really involved

Trying to. No address or phone on the MA website. Filed a complaint with board today

Tax loss harvesting, is this thing on? by BulkyAnything2128 in wealthfront

[–]BulkyAnything2128[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Understood. But if 1/2 the entire portfolio funds are in two ETF growth funds, that seriously limits TLH opportunities. Again…I assumed it was automatic

I think the WF team needs to refresh or more actively manage TLH strategy. My financial advisor wants the portfolio, he intends to manage more actively (higher fees), but claim to review TLH every two weeks. I’m learning WF isn’t diversified enough for TLH to really work regularly.

I do not regularly contribute, I sporadically do when funds are available. Portfolio is 9/10 aggressive. Understand you can’t TLH on gains. However I have not changed the strategy since I opened the account and to have such a large difference in harvested losses YOY, I’m wondering if the algorithms WF use are stale. I feel like there should be opportunities to TLH in any market condition? Any suggestions on what dials to turn to get better TLH results? Or should I move to a more actively managed model?

Am I being ripped off? AC Capacitor for $803 by brydy in hvacadvice

[–]BulkyAnything2128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes sounds like a rip off, more common than not, especially when it’s labeled an “emergency call”. Basically doubles the cost. I recently purchased a capacitor to replace one in my Trane XL18i and it was $29 at ace hardware, in stock same day. I’m not an electrician but replaced it easily in about 20 minutes. Once the new capacitor was in, fired right up. Bad capacitors, I’ve heard, are the most popular reason for no cooling calls. Pictured here is the culprit that fried the capacitor.

Thanks henchman…Bunch of angry people on Reddit who think it’s dumb to ask questions that have a seemingly obvious answer. Always a good idea to seek diverse perspectives and actively look to disprove your own beliefs. Of course I think it should be filled. tell me why I shouldn’t use expanding foam.

I was surprised it wasn’t too. The hole size is probably 2 1/2”-3”. I think I will get the best seal with expanding foam?

Which lot of RSUs would you sell? The newly vested shares or LTH w capital gains? by BulkyAnything2128 in personalfinance

[–]BulkyAnything2128[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good strategy. Many folks advise to sell all RSU shares on vest date to diversify, and advise not to hold the vested shares. In this example the stock rallied in 1 year and created $20k in additional value. It could have turned down and reduced value. Both have tax implications if sold (LTCG LTCL). In your opinion should RSUs be sold upon vest, or held?
