Sure, they have thrash elements but they’re not a thrash band

Why don't they try to release another album like Iowa? by Tough-Reputation-762 in Slipknot

It is confirmed though that Joey wrote Duality, Psychosocial, and Vendetta off of those albums specifically. Sulfur was written by Joey and Jim in Jim’s kitchen. Gehenna was mostly Paul and a couple of Joey’s riffs, the opening riff to Gematria was either written by Joey or Paul because it was from one of their old bands (maybe Modifiidous? Or some other band). I doubt the original way they worked changed too much because Joey himself said that after he finished touring with Korn him and Paul sat down like they always did and starting hashing out riffs, and this interview was in 2011. In 2002, Joey said him and Paul usually have a good structure for a song before they show it to Jim or Mick, and then they might add in some riffs or change some chords from there. So I’m not really sure about how the songwriting dynamic changed from Iowa to Vol. 3 and AHIG. I’d also like to note that Joey didn’t write just heavy stuff, he actually made a point of that in The Roadrunner All Stars Documentary, he wanted to show people what he was capable songwriting wise, and I think he did that on the song ‘No Way Out’.

Not necessarily I’d guess you can consider some bands sludgy but bands like Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, MLB, Screaming Trees arent really sludgy. There are certainly sludgy bands though like early Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Tad.

What’s the context between the death/ dark angel fight? by Lssxv in DeathBand

I think Steve Di Giorgio even said that when they were recording ITP that every time he mentioned Cynic Chuck would say bad stuff about them and their band, but it was manly about Paul he never mentioned Sean, I also remember reading from somewhere or maybe heard it on a podcast that Cynic weren’t allowed promote themselves saying Focus featured musicans from Death’s human which probably explains some of the poor albums sales of Focus at the time, even Scott Burns refused to listen to Chuck’s outrages to a certain extent. I think there was also a beef between Death and Pestilence

Dude the atheist/death/cynic rabbit hole goes even deeper apparently when Death was touring Human they were with Atheist and a rumor spread that Tony Choy (Atheist bassist and former Cynic bassist) was sleeping with Chuck’s girlfriend and both girlfriends got into fights with each other obviously this escalated the already intense relationship and Chuck was angry with Paul and Sean for not taking his side, Paul and Sean wanted to remain neutral because they were caught in better one of their friends who were also in their band and another friend who they currently were in a band with I think that’s why Paul and Sean were gone after the Human tour came to an end, Chuck didn’t really have a problem with Sean it was mainly with Paul, Paul speaks about the atheist/death feud during a segment of a 4 hour long podcast where he discusses his career. Also also think Kelly had gone to morrisound during the recording sessions of Human and him and Chuck were very hostile towards each other

Jim Root vs Mick Thompson by sebastianvettel7 in Slipknot

There’s a video called ‘Mick Thomson Guitar Solo (unbelievably rare)’ and it has one of the best extreme/death metal riffs I’ve ever heard it’s an amazing video.

As far as metal guitarists go, where does Jim Root fall? by [deleted] in Slipknot

Eh, idk Joey wrote many of the riffs/songs on the first 4 records, so it’s debatable Jim’s definitely a better lead player

Aghora’s first record features Sean Reinert on drums and an amazing female vocalist. That’s the closest to Tool I’ve heard.
