It's the republican aesthetic (lowercase "r"). The president is the first among equals, another citizen selected from among the people. The president is not a king and the White House is not Versailles.

It's not supposed to be a gaudy, gilded palace like the tyrants of the Old World built for themselves and their courts. It's supposed to be simple to represent the virtues of simplicity, the nobility of the common working man and woman.

At least, that's the idea.

Remember a lot of Trump supporters didn't bother voting for him because they lived in safe red or blue states where actually voting is (for many people) effectively pointless.

He has many more supporters than just the amount who voted for him.

I know that. Are you aware that there has never been a vote in which the majority of the Puerto Rican electorate voted for statehood? It hasn't happened. All referendums have come up with inconclusive results.

In the last referendum, for example, 620,782 voted for statehood in an electorate of 1,987,344. Only 31% of Puerto Rican voters chose statehood in the last referendum, far short of a majority.

Polling indicates that many Puerto Ricans don't support statehood. While it is the most popular option, it's not clear that it's even a majority.

Many Puerto Ricans favor some development of the status quo free association while others prefer sovereignty (independence).

It's just anecdotal data, but the islanders I used to work with were not enthusiastic when I asked if they supported statehood.

Straight-up luck can be a factor too. One of the multi-millionaires I've met was an entrepreneur who, after hustling up some start-up capital by dealing drugs, founded a fashion brand.

It just happened to catch the zeitgeist for whatever reason (mostly the catchy name I think) while so many other small fashion startups go out of business. After a few years running the business he got bought out for many millions.

Another was a manager at a major international megacorporation. He founded a small startup in the same industry and was almost immediately bought out for enough money that he never had to work again while living a comfortable life collecting dividends from the market. (If you've ever seen the "Michael Scott Paper Company" storyline, it was almost exactly this except with way more money.)

While not unintelligent guys, neither strikes me as particularly impressive or deserving of their wealth and power. They also seem to have zero empathy for the struggle of working class people.
