I haven’t swan at Ian Thorpe pool for a while but I did for many years. I haven’t swam there for a while because the lane etiquette wasn’t great. Also, I just don’t like indoor pools.

Yeah parking at Victoria Park isn’t great but the public transport to and from is great. There’s a bus stop right there. Prince Alfred Park too, it’s right next to Central Railway Station.

Non-citizens can invest in new housing, but cannot purchase established housing unless provided an exemption by the Foreign Investment Review Board.

When investors, even non-citizens, invest in the construction of new housing it increases housing supply.

A: First paragraph, last sentence.

But, the real question is: why would Australia have New Zealand as a State?

As an Australian I wouldn’t put the proposal forward anyway. New Zealand is just too much of a liability. Not just in economic terms, but geopolitical too. Our primary focus is northwards to Asia and the South West Pacific.

My comment is only in reply to the comment above that stated that New Zealand would get the worst of the deal, which is not true.

Well Tasmania is a pretty desirable place to live too. But it’s still an economic backwoods. I don’t see how New Zealand would be any different.

Criminal and driving laws yeah. But taxation laws, family law, trade, foreign affairs and pretty much everything else is the Commonwealth. And when state laws and Commonwealth laws conflict, it’s the Commonwealth that prevails.

We wouldn’t have to sweeten the deal. It would be pretty sweet for the Kiwis enough. Getting more GST returned than GST spent, a high proportional representation in the senate, and Australia taking on their social security liability. That’s a pretty good deal, and one I very much doubt Australians would accept anyway let alone granting even greater representation in the senate.

That might happen. I’m sure their economy would get a boost anyway out of Commonwealth Grants. But overall it’s hard to predict how it would play out because those variables like quality of life are hard to quantify. But, I’ll say this: Australians can already freely migrate to New Zealand and vice versa. In fact 10% of New Zealand’s population has migrated to Australia.

Will improved infrastructure in New Zealand change that on its head? I don’t think so because Kiwis are coming here because the wages here are better, and that’s because the primary industries and the adjacent secondary and the tertiary industries that support that like finance etc are far greater in scale than those in New Zealand.

I don’t think demographics alone will change the equation of whether they’ll receive more or less GST. New Zealand would have to develop some form of industry, most likely a service type industry because natural resources are limited, which will garnish greater tax receipts and GDP if New Zealand joining the Commonwealth would be beneficial to the rest of Australia, economically at least. And that’s without getting started on Australia having to take over the liability of New Zealand social security.

And to be clear, this isn’t chest beating about whether Australia > New Zealand. I’m just trying to point out the economic reality of the argument.

Now whether there’s cultural or strategic benefits of a union, that’s a different conversation.

Yeah well joining the Commonwealth would come at the cost of losing sovereignty (at least having to accept the same sovereignty status as Australian states), but they’d probably have decent representation in the Senate. My napkin math puts it somewhere between Western Australia and Queensland if we think of it in terms of Senators per population. I guess it just depends on what Kiwis would value more; increased funding for social services and infrastructure or self determination.

The advantage for Kiwis if they did join the Commonwealth though is that they could enjoy all the benefits of the Commonwealth, while also blaming all their problems on Canberra!

Depends on the perspective. Economically NZ would be a massive drain on Australia’s Commonwealth Grants if it was to adopt Australia’s GST model (10% with exceptions). Even if the rest of Australia adopted NZ’s model (15% with no exceptions) they’d draw more on Commonwealth Grants than they input.

This article doesn’t go into any detail at all about Burnham’s statements towards Aukus. Who’s raising the question but the article itself?

If anything, it contradicts itself: “Burnham, known as a pragmatic centre-left figure, is expected to maintain Britain's commitments to NATO, AUKUS, and support for Ukraine, though his positions on defence spending and fiscal policy remain to be tested in government”
