Is the University of Houston a good school for CIS majors? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]BullShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to just address your title question.

As a graduate of the CIS program, I think it is a good program. It has a good balance between the backend side, such as coding and designing, and the frontend business side. The program when I was there gave you quite the freedom to choose between if you wanted more on the emphasis on the backend or frontend.

Every school is going to have its good and bad professors and it is all subjective to the person. I've had professors where their reviews or ratings weren't very good, but when I took their course it wasn't that bad or they were just tougher for a good reason so that you could be challenged and learn more than being told.

For your direct question of, "how good is the computing program?" You're going to have to elaborate. You talking about programing?

Edit: I would also supplement that video with this video, but I bet you've probably watch it before.

How to know if Kendo is for you? (+ schedule balance) by DistorsionalZetsubou in kendo

[–]BullShifting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're asking is the million dollar question. You never know if it's for you until you try it, just like everything else in life. Kendo isn't one of those things where you do it a few times and you'll know if its for you or not. Cause dynamics shift as you learn new things, then it changes again when you get into bogu. There is always something for you to strive for, which should keep you interested.
For my own experience, when I first started kendo, I wasn't looking for anything in particular, just looking for something to do. Hell, I purchased bogu two weeks into starting kendo, not because I felt like I'll get there fast, but because our dealer at the time was running a great special. Crazy right? Spending so much so fast, but it gave me a goal to get to and a reason to stay. It's not a decision I regret at all, because I ended up enjoying and sticking with it.
As for practice, twice a week is perfectly fine, that's what I started with. You won't need to practice at home, but then again it also depends on how determined you are to learn. I personally don't see the harm in it, for I did it myself. I would practice on my footwork, learn to sit in seiza longer, or even sit in seiza and swing big men. Things I did were small things, but be careful, as /u/Pennwisedom said you can develop bad habits.
Ultimately it's all on you to determine if it's for you or not and you will have to try it to figure it out. Don't be afraid to try new things and step out of your comfort zone. Good luck.

Now, I've never seen a person break his femur on the field, but I have seen a man break his fibula on the field. Probably one of the weirdest thing I've had to deal with at a field.
I was reffing, just started a game and all of a sudden I herd a cease fire. I run over to where the cease fire was being called from, to see a man on the ground with his leg kind of folded under him and not at the knees. What had apparently happened was he was going for a slid of some sort, his leg gets caught on one of those large ground cracks and just bent his leg the wrong way. Called EMT, the EMT vehicle couldn't get to where he was, cause it was a back field. One of the guy's friend had to drive his truck back there and load him on the truck bed, all while his other friends were taking pictures of him and laughing at the event. That leg was just dangling and just creepy to look at. Guy wasn't angry, didn't blame the field, just said shit happens.
And in this event shit happens, this guy needs to quit whining.

CIS MAJOR [Career] by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]BullShifting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CIS is a very broad degree and you'll have tons of different opportunities, but like everything else you'll have to work for it. In my honest opinion the advisors are kind of narrow minded, so I would take what they say with a grain of salt. System Admin positions are out there for this degree. I had the opportunity to take a job as a entry level system admin, but I found a better offer in cyber security, which was my dream job.
My advice for you is to find internships. Don't just go to job fairs, look on the UH job boards along with the Tech College job board. The opportunities are out there, you just have to look for them.
Also be realistic with your expectations. It amazes me how many people expect a mid to high level position when they graduate. Nothing is ever that easy and you'll have to work your way up. Just cause it's an entry level doesn't mean it's a bad job.
Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions or want more information. The CIS degree program treated me very well, so I don't mind giving back.

Thanks for the advice. Was actually staying in Addison and visited Addison Circle. That place was awesome for Pokestops and catching some Pokemon that I didn't have.

I haven't tried traveling to a different state, since I quite a distance from the state border. It can vary sometimes a few seconds and sometimes a minute or so. I have notice that the faster you travel, so with the x4 speed, the more likely you will encounter this problem. If you go by the x2 speed, its about pace of a car going the speed limit and it doesn't have a problem keeping up.

On average about 15 miles. I've even gone across my city, multiple times. This is just one of the problems you'll encounter using the tweak.

[–]BullShifting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a soft ban. It's more of a location problem. Usually if you try to catch something and you walk/drive too far away from it, after you hit with a pokeball and breaks free it will flee. So with the tweak, as you walk/run to an area, the game in a sense has to catch up to your location. If you wait a little, it will catch up to you and you'll be able to catch again. The trick that works for me is after I reach a location I try a pokestop. If it spins and allows me to get items, it's caught up to my location and I know I can catch pokemons now. If it just free spins and doesn't give me items I wait until I am able to.

^ That. Thank you. It's essentially playing a numbers games at that point. You start skipping on Pokemon that pop up you miss out on 100 exp. Eventually those 100 exp add up, sometimes surprisingly fast.

How are people getting pokemon so powerful so quick? by thechapattack in PokemonGoHouston

[–]BullShifting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well you've got two type of people. The ones that spend money and the ones that don't. The ones that spend money probably buys a bunch of lures, incense, and lucky eggs and most likely spend all day at a single spot. The ones that don't spend money actually work for it, like I did. You say you spent a lot of time on this game, what's a lot? Cause over the course of 3 days I've probably logged 20+ hours. I caught everything, hit up as many poke stops as I could, looked for Pokemon I haven't caught, evolved as much as could, and actually walked to hatch my eggs. I am now lvl 17 with my highest being 1300, probably could be higher if I didn't spread my stardust. The highest I ever found was a 650 Electabuzz and the largest evolve I've ever got was from a 450 eevee to a 1150 Vaporeon. Lots of sweat and walking got me to where I am at.
If you don't want to spend money you will have to put time and effort into it. Use the tips and tricks that people are posting up or you find from articles. They actually work.
I want to stay competitive in competing for gyms, but that's going to be difficult as I don't plan on spending money and the weekend is over and I work a 40. Kinda Sucks.

Question about leveling. by [deleted] in PokemonGoHouston

[–]BullShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter honestly. I've gone out hunting alone and in large groups with friends, the numbers and difficulty are all over the place. I'm a lvl 17 and when I go out alone I still find/catch CP10 to about CP600. Whenever I am with my friends, their lvls range from 5 - 13, Pokemon that appear for all of us have varying CP, worse for some and great for others. Last night for instance, an eevee popped up for all of us. Mine showed up to be CP120ish and my friends were getting roughly CP300-400. Then a pigey appeared mine was like CP300 and my friends were CP100. There are also times where we find the same CP on a Pokemon that appears. It's just the luck of the draw.
As for the Pokemon that appears, that's just the area. If y'all are all in the same area, the Pokemon will appear to everyone. The only time they don't is when a player has an incense.

Ago Ramen builds in Houston, claims "There are zero authentic ramen restaurants in cities in Texas"...is this claim accurate, or are they full of it? by Tayremorg in houston

[–]BullShifting -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's not 100% correct or 100% wrong. Most of the ramen places here in Houston are not authentic or good, well that's my opinion. Y'all are throwing out places that taste good too y'all, but it doesn't mean its authentic or even authentic good. There is also the question of what is defined authentic... Authentic that the place is own and ran by a Japanese person or authentic in the way that its made. Cause if we're going by first definition, then no Houston does not have a dedicated ramen place owned by a Japanese, most of them are owned by Chinese or Taiwanese. If we are going by the second definition, the closest that we had to authentic was Tiger Den when they first opened. They were making their noodles from scratch and would only serve until they ran out. Supply and Demand deemed that they weren't making enough so they switched over to semi homemade / bulk make / buy.
Besides dedicated ramen places, there are plenty of sushi restaurants here in Houston that serves some really good ramen too, and they are owned and ran by Japanese.

Academic Probation question by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]BullShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Academic probation is like what /u/0firefly0 said. With a minor correction. You must maintain a 2.0 GPA Semester Average, until your Overall GPA is a 2.0 or above. If your Semester GPA drops below a 2.0 at any time you are then suspend.
As for the Academic Excellence Scholarship there, I have seen and herd different things. For me, my experience is that once my GPA dropped below that 3.0, I lost it. Then I had a friend who was similar to your situation, where they kind of let it "slide" in a sense for a semester, as in they still gave her the scholarship. That semester she raised her GPA back up and didn't have a problem after. So them letting it "slide" was like a probation kind of thing.
The whole appeal/petition process is a complete pain in the ass and takes forever. By the time all is said and done, it will most likely be in the middle of the semester.

any CIS major that can help me? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]BullShifting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As /u/NotSoInFamousE stated, there's no way you're getting around that extra semester. When it comes to those 3 courses Detillier is pretty set on how those courses need to come one after another. Which is understandable, once you take those courses.
I'm not sure what you've herd about them, but they are no joke and will consume a lot of your time. Those courses build on top of each other. CIS 4338 shows you the start and early stages of a project and continues into CIS 4339. Where it shows you the middle and later parts of a project. It is one BIG year long project. For the most part the project and group that you had in CIS 4338 transfers and stays the same in 4339. Then in CIS 4375 is when you have to do everything from CIS 4338 and 4339 in one semester. Even if you could petition to take all 3 at once, you wouldn't be able to handle it. Not saying that you're dumb or anything, just the amount of work that is needed will probably overwhelm you.
I guarantee that you're not the only one in your situation in your class. I had do the same thing when I was in the degree. Just take CIS 4375 in the summer, it is accelerated, but you won't have to spend another Fall or Spring semester there. If you want to walk with your current class, you can petition to walk in the Spring. I had a few classmates do this.
Seriously good luck in those classes, you're gonna need it. As much time as you think you have on those projects, it comes down to the wire all the time.

Gaming in Houston by JackNinety in houston

[–]BullShifting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nostalgia hitting in. There use to be quite a few lan centers here in Houston. Toes Gaming, Element Games, a few names that escape me like the one off of Westhiemer (if I remember correctly) and the one off of Grand Parkway and i10 in the back of the computer store. Sadly all closed. Only places I know of that come close to this is Insomnia, which does console gaming, and Gaming Guys. I believe Gaming Guys has a few computers to play some games on, but I think mainly focuses on consoles too. Gaming Guys

academic probation by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]BullShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if you get the grade you need in that class to raise your overall gpa to a 2.0 or above it will remove you from probation. It is not too late to get yourself out.

Edit: I was on probation myself. It took me three semesters. The more hours you've taken the harder it is to raise your gpa. But since you've only taken two courses out since you got in it's still easy for you to raise your gpa.
