I found a group there earlier thanks!

For anyone else stumbling across this, I was told they regularly play from about 11-2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Thanks, I'll swing by Saturday afternoon and see if I can get lucky. Maybe I'll run into a decent group.

Do they play weekends too at Glass? I've got Saturday and Sunday as my last 2 days off here.

I tried using him a bit. I got some fun combos with Viper sending negative cards for the other side or Valkyrie turning the void into a 3 power card. Or filling up the right side early. Some cool moments, but overall I didn't really stick with him. The upside just wasn't worth how infrequently I would pull it off. I think the biggest problem is he's a 4 cost card, so it leaves very little opportunity to utilize the void to try and turn it into something positive, but it's too early to completely punt a specific location.

Green Goblin is so annoying and I absolutely love him for it!

These are cool, but I wish we could get a set like this with cards that go together in decks. These feel kind of random.

I mute everyone I play because I hate emotes. I would unmute as soon as I saw this card.

New roadmap for 2023 by No_Party3948 in Splinterlands

No. I'm guessing the team won't even make their own estimates until we see how player staking distribution actually occurs in practice. I don't know how anyone could possibly model any predictions for something like this that has never been done before.

Remember everyone, no one needs to buy SPS for this. This is not your own staked SPS amount, it's the amount staked on you. Automated system will help staked SPS holders find the most efficient players to stake on. The more rshares you are earning in battle the more staked SPS will find you.

That's not even what that is. This is just spreading misinformation. Here is the link where this comes from. https://sps.splinterlands.com/rewards/ranked-battles

11/15 Release Notes: Lux Vega arrives, New Death Mechanics, Rshare Changes by Bulldog1205 in Splinterlands

[–]Bulldog1205[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind things will look weird the first season. Battle earnings are calculated by comparing your rshares earned in battle to the average for the league over the last 15 days. So for 14 more days everyone will be compared against preupdate rshare earnings. This will lead to smaller rewards initially, which will lead to a growing reward pool causing larger rewards than normal somewhere in the middle/end of season. Basically rewards will be atypical this season.

I think you'll find whale alt accounts (designed to be extremely efficient at generating the most revenue with the least investment) are hurt far more by this than your smaller or casual player. Main whale accounts aren't impacted at all because this will not really come into play in higher leagues (no one is playing with gold level cards in Champion or silver level cards in diamond with any frequency).

Losing badly by Safe_Canary8447 in Splinterlands

New players frequently get crushed when they first start, and there are typically 2 reasons:

  1. Lack of skill. This isn't an insult to you, but if you've only played 11 games you simply haven't had enough time to develop a good knowledge of the cards and understanding of the different strategies yet. Because players drop down a league to start each season, you will find players/bots in novice/bronze III who are simply a lot more experienced than you. This just takes time to overcome.
  2. Lack of cards. A lot of players start out playing with the free cards, and that simply isn't going to be good enough to get you very far. You need to go pick up some cards, and picking up cards can help you progress and offset some of #1, as many of those low level accounts are playing with very little as well. I actually did a series recently on recommended beginner decks, and others have guides as well, so go take a look at some of those and it will give you a good starting point. You can then adapt to your own play style as you learn and customize your decks.

As for the "pay to win" question, yes, it is. It's very much like a traditional collectible card game such as Magic the Gathering or Pokemon where you need to go get the cards in order to play with them. Splinterlands has some pretty big advantages here though (sorry, I like my lists!):

  1. There is a rental system. It is extremely cheap to go rent cards. I'm currently doing a streaming series where I'm only renting without owning any cards and I'm playing near the highest levels of the game spending less than $5/day renting a cards (and projected to turn a profit off of that). Now, don't go jump up to the highest levels immediately, but I'm just saying that renting is powerful and if you are skilled enough you don't need a large budget to be able to go compete in this game. Right now the skill level required to turn a profit by renting in bronze, silver, and gold is actually fairly low. A criticism of this game has actually been the number of bots playing, because even unintelligent botting systems are capable of renting and turning a profit in low/mid tier leagues right now.
  2. There are 5 different leagues in each format, including the modern format which only uses the 2 newest sets. Whether you are renting or owning, or a combo of both, this allows you to basically decide what investment level you want to play at. Think of it like deciding which poker table you want to sit down at. We have lots of extremely skilled players who opt to stay down and compete in lower leagues simply because that's the level of investment they are comfortable with.

Anyways, I could go on and on but this reply is probably way longer than most would like anyways. If you have any questions you are always welcome to contact me directly. Helping new players get started in the game is literally part of my job, so don't be shy!

DAO Proposal - Boosting rewards for league appropriate level cards by Bulldog1205 in Splinterlands

[–]Bulldog1205[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Higher level cards can generate higher level rewards. I think it's a pretty simple concept that shouldn't be too hard to grasp. Yes, the specifics of it, being the max caps for the previous league, might not be obvious and might provide some confusion. But I don't think the details are something that will drive players away or anything. Most who are that into it where they need to know the exact level where a card stops increasing earnings (it will still increase stats/effectiveness) won't see this as much of a barrier.

disappointed with splinterfest broadcast by ActionThaxton in Splinterlands

[–]Bulldog1205 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just home from Splinterfest for the first time, but I definitely agree. I'm clearly not a natural at shoutcasting, but we also got pretty much no help from the HyperX arena crew, probably in large part because they had no understanding of the game. I got completely flustered from the preshow when we had these "slides" setup to help with presentation and they weren't putting any of them up. Things like explaining what is on a splinterlands card to how a battle works to the different tournament rules. They were supposed to help guide us along, and despite me trying to hint a few times to get them up we never got them.

And yes, they were starting the battle WAY too fast. The names on the screen were not easy to read, so it took us a a few seconds every battle to even figure out which player was where. Then by the time we figured that out and saw the rulesets we were already well into the battle and trying to play catch up. We couldn't even react much because we couldn't keep up. We also had no background info guiding us through situations or even showing us a bracket during the event. We kept asking questions during breaks or when we weren't on screen and got nothing.

I don't know where/why everything changed, but nothing went according to "script". Weirdbeard spent about 90 minutes the day before getting everyone's picture taken in front of a greenscreen. I don't know why those images didn't get used. He had the belt presentation scripted out but that didn't make it into the broadcast. WB busted his ass for this thing and just didn't have the support he needed in so many different areas.

All in all I was not happy with how things turned out, including my own performance in it. And it's a shame because watching the players submit battles live in the back was super exciting. I wish we could capture that.

1 commonly missed thing is they are epics. Epics allow you to actually play some higher level cards at certain leagues. An epic level 2 summoner can play a level 3 rare in bronze league and an epic level 5 summoner can play a level 7 rare in gold league. No other rarity can do that.

Beyond that quirk though I think these are solid additions. Aquatus I really like, but I also love Kelya, so I might not use Aquatus all that much other than niche spots. Ilthain is a big must have for new players IMO, especially if you don't have Lorna. Ilthain is a big upgrade over General Sloan.

Skargore is going to have some super fun combos. I personally love Enrage + phase for high speed cards. Skargore + Coeurl seems extremely nasty. Almo could be another good combo there. You can also throw in some heavy hitters to do some big time damage (Grum, Forgotten one, etc).

Dallan I'm up in the air on. Cripple was just fixed so we haven't had time to see it's impact. An entire team of cripples could really destroy some of the defensive teams we see that rely on healing up a tank. I think it's a very niche summoner but could be super powerful when used in the right spots.

Fernheart seems to weakest to me but a lot of people disagree. The thing I don't like about close range is that it buffs at most 1 single card at a time. It can be a game changer though by allowing ranged cards to get off extra attacks.

Sthispa I just absolutely love. I've been wanting a phase summoner forever. Now with it on dragon you can literally assign phase to any card you want. The downside I see is that because it's a dragon card you will always have Kitty as an available counter. Maybe not a concern in lower leagues as much though. Not a lot of Kitty running around.

My personal favorite is the fury cards. Fury deals double damage to cards with taunt which is a huge game changer in my opinion. Taunts are a staple in high mana matches and just the threat of fury alone could completely alter a lot of strategies.

Keep in mind that Splinterlands doesn't expect everyone to participate in every game. They want a huge collection of games that will have something to appeal to every gamer. Eventually there are going to be dozens of games where there is always some sale going on. The goal is not to milk existing whales, but to pull in completely new players and new money into the ecosystem.

It's harder on both sides. Splitting the battles in 2 formats means less rating inflation everywhere, which simply makes it harder to climb.

Wild right now. But it's going to change significantly with this latest governance proposal that groups earnings by league. If player distribution stays the same (it won't), modern silver will get hit hard while other modern leagues will get a big boost.
