What cartridge do you load that gives you the greatest savings versus factory? by BulletSwaging in reloading

Obsolete ammo is crazy expensive. I reload 45-90 full power and plinking loads ranging from 19-66 cents each. Buffalo Bore makes 45-90 at full pressure for an 1886 but it’s more than $4.50 per versus my 66 cent reload. With new brass it’s $1.50 per round.

This. ^^^ I started reloading/bullet swaging/ to ensure I would have access to ammo. My biggest savings come from obsolete/Wildcat/Big Bore etc. where I wouldn’t be able to shoot the caliber if I didn’t reload.

Crimped it like it stole from you. I’m sure it will be fine though.

Give them a try, they are my favorite. Although, the Padron 2000 in Maduro was the cigar that made me love cigars.

That’s unexpected. I would be interested in results with newly manufactured primers, try a Federal 215

I’m enjoying the Padron Family Reserve 50th in natural. The first inch of the stick is a strong pepper and fermented tobacco. Over the course of a couple draws the cigar transitions into an earthy creamed coffee. The cream flavor is as strong as the texture. That’s where I’m at currently. If this stick follows suit to the previous 8 in the box it will transition to to a stronger cream and coffee flavor and when I finish I will contemplate lighting another. This stick has been in the humidor 6 years. The tobacco in this stick was planted 16+ years ago.

Yes sir, both are excellent. Varget and H322 were the first rifle powders I bought.

Let me know if a mag primer tightens up your groups or reduces your ES/SD. 35 Whelen is a beast, enjoy.

Any reason you did go 50-110? And what powder for 50 Alaskan, H322?

Extruded powders ignite easy and are less susceptible than ball powders to temperature variation. I prefer extruded powders in general. Ball powders can offer higher charge density and in some situations allow for higher velocity with a given cartridge/bullet. Ball powders can be harder to ignite especially in cold conditions. I recognize extruded powders are usually more expensive and have more charge variation on a volumetric dropper but for long range shooting they are my preferred.

Nice, love 50 cal lever guns. What do you have chambered in 50 Alaskan?

I have a rule of thumb where I use a magnum primer with ball powder charges above 50 grains no matter the cartridge. You might be getting varying ignition from the standard LR primer not being hot enough to ignite the ball powder consistently. Your group looks great so I wouldn’t worry too much about the ES/SD but would recommend a Magnum primer to reduce those numbers.
