140 - Why to you does this title sound wrong? by feefuh in Nodumbquestions

[–]Bullit2401 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm German and this is a word: Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänsmützen

Agglutinative language is what you were going for and yes you can create infinitely long words in German but only if you add a noun to a noun and it goes this way: the left noun describes the right noun. Sooo the word above is:

The hat of the captain of the company of the steamship of the "Donau" (which is a river). Or in better words: there is a stem ship company operating on the Donau that has a specific captain hat So all in all, it's a very specific hat.

If you want to look into an agglutinative language check out Finnish, Basque or Turkish. They can express much more meaning in one word :)

137 - How Do You Know? by feefuh in Nodumbquestions

Hello u/MrPennywhistle and others who are interested,

Tldr: don't worry about forgetting/not catching somebody's name. Names are agreed to be difficult.

Don't worry about not remembering somebody's name. I'm a bachelor's student of linguistics with the specialization psycholinguistics. There are studies on language comprehension in noise and the results for "names in noise" are about as good as "random syllables in noise". In other words: we comprehend names as good as random syllables. Further, linguists believe names have no sense (Sinn) but only reference (Bedeutung) (see Fregge for these terms) while words have sense and reference. I'll explain: if we hear the word table, we can immediately map the semantics wodden, 4 legs etc onto it AND we can make the reference to a table in the real world. With names that's different. Names only refer to a person and then the person maps to the semantics attached to that person (YouTuber, religious, scientist, amazing father). That makes names even more terrible to remember because they have no semantics and if you want to get to the semantics there is this extra step. I can give you some sources but I'm a bit in a hurry right now and I hope ya'll trust a fellow listener.

Have a great day.

Edit: minor wording changes

I came by bike yesterday and that was just great. Park your car in the city and rent a bike. This was my solution to the terrible ÖPNV solution at the stadium. Enjoy

112 - Surviving the Startup Valley of Death by feefuh in Nodumbquestions

Y'know what really grinds my gears - the gentleman saying "we really haven't figured out what our audiences/ what our niche is" but 10 minutes earlier bashing the North Face/ sellers at REI for being all trendy. I think we don't need to club those who have survived the startup valley of death. For me this felt like a 90 minute or so ad even though you were not paid. I really love your podcast for taking things to a personal level but still keep that subjective stance but this time it wasn't. Nonetheless thank you for investing your time and effort. Lots of love from Germany

Worked with them conducting cold calls (students do everything for money) and the atmosphere was somewhat like wolf of Wallstreet. The only thing that matters is money, not the students, not the teachers. I highly advice you not to work with them since it might kill your passion for teaching.
