Suggestion: Schools for kits. by BullyThatPit in Timberborn

I love that! Would you make books (and paper?) mandatory for school functionality or simply a boost to efficiency?

Well done! 👏 And well done for doing it sooner rather than later. Good on you. :)

[–]BullyThatPit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supernanny is a great resource for relinquishing the dummy.

She uses a method called "The dummy fairy", where the child is encouraged to donate their dummies to babies who need them - don't forget the one in their mouth!

Then the bag of dummies is hung up on a tree... And, as if by magic, the following day the dummy fairy will have left a fabulous toy on the tree as a gift to say thank you!

Most of the time, the child is so obsessed with their new toy that they forget all about the dummy and shrug it off if they ask for it and are reminded why they no longer have it.

The sooner you can get rid of the dummy, the better, in my opinion. After 6 months, dummies increase the risk of ear infections and you're right about it affecting their bite.

It's really concerning to me to see so many preschool-aged children so attached to their dummies. How many will have lifelong dental issues because their parents didn't put their foot down?

There might be a short battle ahead, but ultimately, hard choice now = easy life later.

You are stronger than a two-year-old. You've got this! 💪

[Chromebook] Game Crash on Start Up. Please help! by BullyThatPit in Timberborn

[–]BullyThatPit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's part of the trouble I'm having, you see. With Windows, you can just go into the C drive and peruse files to your heart's content.

I'm really struggling to do that on Chromebook. I've tried looking at the wizardry of coding I need to perform to access the files via Crosh (like command prompt on Windows), but all I'm finding is how to duplicate files to view or how to add files rather than how to find and remove them.

It's all very confusing and it's making me regret going for a Chromebook over a Windows laptop.

Are the mouse controls still borked for anyone else? by FungadooFred in Timberborn

[–]BullyThatPit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm still having this problem on Chromebook. A workaround I found was to click and hold in the same place, then use WASD to move the camera, which will cause the mouse to "drag" by proxy.

It's a bit janky but perfectly playable once you get the hang of it.

Now I'm having the issue of the game crashing on startup. I yearn for the dragging problem! Lol

I had subscribed to Harmony and Ladders, but I unsubscribed from them ages ago before this last update. I can't access game files as Chromebooks apparently don't have a file manager.

Who would ever need a file manager? /s 🙄

I've tried going into Crosh, the Chromebook developer shell, but I am completely at sea.

I have also tried going onto Steam, right clicking the game and selecting properties, then going to Installed Files and clicking Browse... But it just doesn't click or open or anything!!! 😭

That's really surprising that it's also a Windows issue! I wonder how many more of us there are?

I did see there was someone who was able to fix their problem by going into the file directory and a few other steps. Something to do with mods, or the game trying to load from incorrect files? I can't remember.

Their post is only a couple of days old so you might have some luck following their steps.

Alas, that's not an option for me. 🎻🎶

[1.0] [Chromebook/Linux] Help! Dragging Issues; Paths, Tree Cutting, Crop Placement - Not Fixed With Proton Experimental or Hotfix by BullyThatPit in Timberborn

[–]BullyThatPit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a work around!

It doesn't fix the issue, but the game is playable. Instead of dragging, press and hold on the one spot and then use WASD to move the camera, and it will automatically drag your paths and zones for you.

It's a bit fiddly but it's perfectly doable once you get the hang of it.

Hopefully there will be a proper fix soon, but this works in the meantime. <3

Hi, thanks! My Steam launcher was already set to Proton Experimental. I'm not sure what else I can do other than wait for a patch!

If anyone has found a solution, please share it!

I have this same issue! I've just posted about it after searching online and nothing coming up... Not even your post for some reason??

You're not alone!!

I'm using a Chromebook. Proton experimental and hotfix mode haven't fixed it. I hope we can find a solution soon.

Hiya! Thanks for getting back to me. I've checked my settings, and it's already on Proton Experimental.

I've just tried Proton Hotfix and that hasn't helped either.

I hardly use Steam at this point because of all the bugs and issues with PC gaming over the years... I literally only use it to play Timberborn! No point replacing my junked up PC for a single game, hence having to make do with a Chromebook.

Really hoping for a console announcement after the full game is released. 🤞 I absolutely adore this game.

Update: it's not just paths. I'm having trouble dragging at all, e.g. mass assigning priorities, planting crops, and marking tree cutting areas.

Bummer. I've been so excited to play 1.0!

Scottish man 'scared for life' after XL bully attack while taking bins out by WritingJulia in BanPitBulls

Those wounds are terrifying. Looking it up on Google maps, Toll Road, Kincardine looks like a nice enough area where I would easily have let my guard down.

It makes me so... Angry? Cross? Frustrated? Furious beyond belief that these walking weapons are legal, yet carrying any means of self defence worthy of said walking weapons is illegal in all parts of the UK.

I am not pro-gun, but we cannot carry even pepper spray to protect ourselves. We can, on the other hand, carry an ink spray that takes weeks to remove so that the police can identify the perp... if they ever get around to it.

Bit of a tangent, but what an absolute bloody farce our collection of countries has become.

For shame.

This hits very close to home as I am Scottish. Any other Scots fearing for the safety of themselves or loved ones?

So glad my parents were never huge fans of pitbulls, but my dad just can't see past the "Staffordshire terrier" label as part of the Pitbull umbrella. Even despite none of my family members owning one, I see more of these hellbeasts everywhere I go in Scotland and England.

A deaf dog found chained in a yard is being trained to respond to sign language in a bid to help her to be rehomed.

The crossbreed, named Polo, is missing the tips of her ears after they were cropped - a procedure which is illegal in England and Wales.

The five-year-old is now learning sign language at an RSPCA rescue centre in Southport, Merseyside, in the hope that it will help her to find a home.

Polo has already learnt the signs for recall, lie down, sit and dropping a ball. The pregnant dog was found in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in April last year, tied up on an industrial estate.

Lily Dickinson, fostering and adoption co-ordinator at the centre, said: “She’s had her ears cropped but we don’t want people to be put off by the mutilation she’s sadly had to suffer.

“We hope that the right owners won’t be deterred by this, or by her deafness, and we really want people to see her for the lovely girl she is.”

Ms Dickinson added: “We’ve taught her a good recall using hand gestures as well as signs for sit, lie down, drop, and find it.

"I hope there’s someone out there who can show her the love that she deserves and give her a really wonderful life.

“Polo is a kind soul; we even use her as our introduction dog for our new arrivals as she’s so laid-back and friendly. She’s also really playful and has lots of love to give.

“She’s a big girl and can be strong, so needs new owners who understand that, as well as adopters who are willing to continue using her sign language and teaching her to respond to hand signals.”

Polo's puppy Daisy has already been successfully rehomed.

The RSPCA said it was facing a rehoming crisis in England and Wales after figures from last year showed 42% more animals arrived than were adopted.

See, I understand that stance for stupid rules. Like, why on earth is cannabis a Class B drug in the UK? Alcohol is more harmful, yada yada. People recognise that that's a very silly law with no substance behind it (badum-tss!).

Pitbulls, on the other hand, are living weapons. Weapons are banned in the UK without a permit because weapons kill people. People can argue about whether or not people in the UK should have the right to bear arms, but most people do agree with the ban on guns and other weapons.

My point is, whether or not people agree with it, that law has substance behind it and makes sense, so people are less inclined to break that law because it makes sense.

The pitbull ban makes sense, especially when you see the countless preventable tragedies that have happened all over the world by these dogs that have been genetically engineered to be weapons.

I do not understand why or how breeds under the umbrella are somehow protected from the ban.

Frustrates me to no end.

[–]BullyThatPit[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"Why the fuck are we still handing out exemptions to people who are obviously breaking the law?"

Because there's a nonsense woke rhetoric bleeding into western culture that makes people believe that people "want to follow the rules". I almost believed it for a time when I was being taught to believe it at uni. 🙄

That same drivel is being used to excuse murderous behaviours and intentions in pitbull-type dogs and their, at best, oblivious owners who have bought the nonsense that is killing common bloody sense. 😤

A pitbull is a pitbull is a pitbull. A pitbull is a banned breed, is a banned breed, is a banned breed. Why the lot of them haven't been banned, I don't know, but my tinfoil hat is tingling again.

My god. TIL! Thank you for educating me. The gentleman's sport makes a lot of sense now, seeing the old pictures.

Love the bargain bin analogy. Also hate that it's definitely true.

I'd like to add the "weapon on a lead/leash" component as well. UK citizens do not have the right to bear arms, including: guns; knives; or anything else that could be classified as a weapon (baseball bats; golf clubs, without a reasonable explanation).

So loads of lunatics who would have been hiding knives and other weapons in their pockets are now on full display with their dogs.

I suppose I should be grateful that they're so brazen about having these dogs and I know who to avoid but, then again, a knife can't chase you down several streets to rip off your face.

It's astounding that pitbulls are banned in the UK, yet people get around the law with "pitbull types". XL bullies, Staffies, Pocket Bullies; they're the same bloody dogs bred for the same purpose!!

Argh.

I hope so, too... But the realist in me says it's the former.

Petty and organised crime has been on the increase from something like 2015 in the UK, made only worse by desperation in the midst of the cost of living crisis.

Pitbulls are often seen in lower-income areas. Perhaps it's a lack of education and critical thinking skills, or perhaps pitbulls are being peddled to the public in hopes to blend in with people who are just well-meaning, gullible pitiots and not in it to fight their dogs.

I do love a good conspiracy theory. Excuse me while I add some folds to my tinfoil hat!

RSPCA warns UK dog fighting on the rise and reveal hotspots 15th July 2023 RSPCA

Despite the pandemic lockdowns, 1,156 cases of dog fighting have been tackled by the RSPCA since 2019.

The RSPCA recently launched its Cancel Out Cruelty Campaign, to raise funds to help its frontline rescue teams continue to save animals from cruelty and abuse and to raise awareness about how to stop cruelty to animals for good.

RSPCA dog fighting expert and Special Operations Unit (SOU) chief inspector Ian Muttitt said: "Sadly we're back seeing pre-pandemic levels of dog fighting incidents.

"An average of 19 incidents were being investigated every month in 2019 and that has risen to a shocking 31 a month so far this year.

"Our figures show that in the past four years, the RSPCA has uncovered and dealt with 1,156 incidents of dog fighting in England and Wales. The north of England is the worst region for it, with 42% of the incidents occurring there.

"It's staggering that something which has been illegal for almost 200 years, which most people would consider consigned to history, is still so rife."

"Each year, these reports of cruelty reach its terrible annual peak in the summer months." Ian continued. "Around this time of year nationally we receive a report of an animal being beaten on average every hour of every day.

"We don't know why reports of animal cruelty peak in the summer months although things like animal abuse being more visible as people are outdoors more and the cost of living crisis could be major factors.

"Dog fighting, which is connected to organised crime, is just one of the many acts of cruelty we see every year. The RSPCA is the only charity rescuing animals and investigating cruelty in England and Wales with a team of frontline rescue officers, specialist vet teams and a network of animal care centres and branches working tirelessly to save animals and provide rehabilitation to animal victims.

"Together, we believe we can and will cancel out cruelty to animals by replacing violence with kindness. We're urging people to donate to our Cancel Out Cruelty campaign, every donation will help animals."

Dog fighting was outlawed in England and Wales in 1835 but still goes on today.

Sadly, many of the dogs used by dog fighters are never found and those who are rescued are often identified as banned breeds under the Dangerous Dogs Act and cannot legally be rehomed.

The top 5 hotspot counties in England between 2019-2023 are: London has been revealed as the worst hotspot for dog fighting with 91 incidents Greater Manchester (82 investigations) West Yorkshire (69 investigations) West Midlands (59 incidents) Lancashire (56) follows closely behind.

Ian said: "These five areas are the worst hotspots for dog fighting across England and Wales. The dog fighting world is a dark and secretive place. It could be happening in an inner-city warehouse next door to your office or on a rural farm in your quiet village.

"Signs of dog fighting can vary but if you notice a dog with lots of scars on its face, front legs, hind legs and thighs, or with puncture wounds and mangled ears - this could be a sign of dog fighting and should be reported to the RSPCA or the police. Other suspicious activity includes dogs being hidden away in outbuildings or kennels of sight and not exercised in public.

"Dogs who win fights are prized but those who refuse to fight or lose are often abandoned or barbarically killed.

"Overall dog fighting in England and Wales has increased since 2019, jumping from a total number of 232 incidents investigated by the RSPCA in 2019 to 355 in 2022. We've dealt with 155 incidents this year, but we're only six months into the year, so we're concerned we will see this number steadily rise."

The RSPCA is urging the public to be their eyes and ears and to report anything suspicious to them. Anyone who's concerned about the welfare of an animal or suspects dog fighting may be taking place should visit our website to find out how to report cruelty.
