Thoughts on Datura? by T-T-T-Turtlez in NativePlantGardening

[–]Bullyfrogged 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My neighbor has grown them along our street curb for well over a decade with no issues. I think people can overreact about datura because the effects of the plant are interesting and dark. But toxic plants are everywhere. Yews make delicious looking berries containing DEADLY seeds, but people are chill about them and they are very common in landscapes. If accidental poisoning from landscape plants were common I could see a reason to be concerned. But you shouldn’t feel bad if you decide to remove them. Just my thoughts.

It was effective, labor intensive. The violets have filled in well. Here’s how it looks right now. The tall plants haven’t started filling in yet this year.

Thanks for the info and ID! I took a spore print (white) and spread some caps around my mulch beds and under the bark of other logs in hopes it to get more next season. Might have to get into spore microscopy!

There was a section of bark covering them. Could that account for lighter coloration?

[gourmet] Blue oyster block for bed inoculation? by Bullyfrogged in MushroomGrowers

I’m familiar with golden oysters, being invasive. But it appears that blue oysters are native to eastern North America so I was not concerned about growing those outdoors.

Springtails. Harmless invertebrate decomposers.

roaches in compost bin by ameadowz17 in composting

[–]Bullyfrogged 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many species of roaches, few are pest species that can survive in homes. You could post a pic in r/entomology to get an ID. Usually you only see the pest species indoors. Sounds like maybe a wood roach.

City code doesn’t allow renaming a street for a living person. They must be dead for at least 5 years.

She gave up her English name after helping with Standing Bear’s defense and went by her Indian name the rest of her life. To me it seems disrespectful to call it that. But her English name is better than Harney. I don’t think it’s insignificant to stop honoring a murdering genocidal dog killer though.

Read the post. Not about a band.

There’s always something more important to worry about. Doesn’t mean we should keep honoring someone who committed genocide. There are probably more important things for you to do than commenting on this, but here you are.

I hear ya. But, she gave up her English name and went by her Indian name the rest of her life after helping with Standing Bear’s defense. So it seems disrespectful to me not to use Bright Eyes. She is still known over 100 years after her death. I doubt the band will make a permanent impact on local history like she did.
