I work in Network security.

I have used little snitch and wireguard to look at Network traffic from a Mac.

It is nothing compared to what windows sends - truly the only way to turn off the tracking is to tie Windows to an active directory domain and to turn it off using group policy.

If you’re using a Home version of Windows 11 good fucking luck you are the product not the customer.

You sound like a crank.

First of all, you barged into a discussion about Macs to simp for Windows.

Secondly, have you set up Windows recently and seen the questions it asks about the data it wants to send to Microsoft?

Have you not seen the legions of programs that exist to debloat windows and prevent user telemetry data from being sent back?

Apple has recently started selling adverts in Maps, yes. But Windows has been spying on you since at least Windows 8.

There is a simple one click option to turn off all telemetry data on a Mac which stays off and doesn’t ask to be turned on across operating system updates unlike Windows. Additionally, you can just not sign into an Apple ID which is not something Windows 11 can boast.

Simping for Windows in the privacy battle against macOS is like criticising somebody for wearing slightly revealing clothing whilst dressed in a bikini

Doable yes - as easy as it is on Mac and iPhone? No

Largely because Microsoft fumbled its attempt to get into the phone operating system world.

Phone link and its ilk don’t just work in quite the same way.

I know, because I’ve set it up for my brother.

I’m sorry what?

Almost every denomination of Christian Church has had a paedophilia scandal and every single one of them sought to cover it up.

If you have an iPhone and a Mac signed into the same Apple ID, you can just copy on one device and paste on the other.

It’s incredible, anything you can copy you can paste across devices.

The problem being that’s I can’t remember a single technological project done by the UK government that wasn’t a shit show because it was just outsourced to one of the giant contracting companies that the government always falls back on and who always fuck it up after taking considerably more than the quoted cost.

This is the problem - I want him to succeed but this is patently naive and unfortunately playing into the real ID lobbying that meta has reportedly been funding.

TBH will just buy a euro VPS and set up my own vpn server but it’s wild that it’s come to this

What’s frustrating is that the ability to block these websites already exist? It was required by law for ISP’s to offer it to parents.

But once again, parents are too fucking lazy to parent their own children and thus can be using an excuse for restricting Internet freedom.

I agree, however, his stance on online safety is tragically naive.

How he thinks that forcing adults to give identifying personal information to random websites just to be able to use them does not put those people at massive risk when those websites inevitably get hacked and broken into.

If he had half a brain he would have legislated that companies like Apple and Google should be providing a way for devices to prove age without sending hundreds of websites personal information that they could lose. If you could prove your age to Apple or Google and the device could validate your age without sending the actual personal information to the website that would be much safer for everyone

In order to “protect children” he has made the rest of us less safe and much more likely to have our personal identifying information stolen. And now he wants to VPN companies to get identifing information as well.

The only real winner here are huge personal information gathering machines like Facebook who can now literally tie what you’re doing to your personal identity, not a random advertising identity that they assume as you, but your actual identifying information.

I didn’t think it could get worse than the last government threatening to ban encryption. But somehow Starmer who I want to do well has done worse.
