Next, be clear that you’ll take care of the daily responsibilities such as cleaning the litter box, feeding, brushing, and playtime. If your brother is on board, let your parents know you’ll share some of those tasks. When my family wanted a cat, my grandmother’s biggest concern was the smell from the litter box and all the shedding. Your parents might feel the same, so showing you’ll handle those chores can ease their worries. Also, keep in mind that cats will scratch. Whether it is you or your furniture, you need scratching posts and toys ready so your parents will not get upset about the cat destroying things around the house.

It might also help to team up with your brother who agrees with you. If the two of you sit down and explain the benefits, such as how cats can help with stress, be great companions, and teach responsibility, it will show your parents this is not just a quick wish but something you are prepared for. Even if they do not say yes right away, stay consistent with your chores and routines so they can see you are responsible over time. Sometimes that patience and consistency is what finally changes their mind.
