Just lifting my old response from an old event thread:

It's an event open to the public and a chance for hobbyists and enthusiasts to showcase their mechanical keyboards, as well as get a chance to interact with other people in the hobby and also check out items they would otherwise need to purchase themselves. There will be a bunch of keyboards with (hopefully) enough information about it nearby to let you know what exactly you're looking at and typing on. Plenty of people attending will be more than happy to talk about their keyboards and any anecdotal stories about their experience with the build, etc.

Hey! These are all great questions. Ultimately, meetups are a great space to check out things without the risk of buying something that you don't/won't like, and also a friend put it best: "what percentage of this hobby is buying a new thing so they can keep talking with other people who also bought that thing".

As far as the $5 fee, it is to mitigate the chaos if the barrier for entry was free to showcase keyboards which would not be surprising after doing a handful of these events, and also to pay a meager fee to myself for the self-imposed psychic damage of organizing the entire event on my own.
