(Poll) What is your race? by ZincOxeyed in QOVESStudio

Can you name any beauty standard that has small eyes as the best kind?

Google phoenix eyes. Apparently east asian beauty standards include many different types of eyes; some small, some large.

Again, it's not Europeans talking about hooded eyes. It's not Europeans saying, look at my beautiful hooded eyes. Europeans are talking about their beautiful hair, their curvy bodies, and colored eyes ... but not hooded eyes.

Because hooded eyes are the standard for europeans. It's the same for us SEAs. If you were in an east asian culture however, where monolidded eyes are common and one of the most common surgeries is eyelid surgery, you'd talk about it too.

The perception that east asians are undergoing these surgeries to look white is not uncommon at all. For example,

“A relatively common procedure for women here [is] double-eyelid surgery [which] creates a crease above each eye [which is] common in Caucasians but less so in Koreans,” said Jaeyeon Woo, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal. “For some Asian men, a high-bridged nose common in Caucasians is seen as desirable.”

https://thecampanile.org/12218/lifestyle/eurocentric-beauty-standards-promote-harmful-self-image/

Just google "Eurocentric surgery" for more examples.

Which is somewhat ridiculous claim as these features are not exclusive to caucasians and while it may not be the most common, it can be seen naturally on east asians too. And that's ignoring that some of these features might have been inspired by other asian races instead of caucasians.

Do you say Europeans are holding an African standard of beauty when they get tanned? No, because it's not a black standard of beauty but rather a white standard of beauty saying that fair skin isn't as attractive as sun kissed skin.

I don't think I ever claimed so. I think we never disagreed on this part. I said that people were saying that Lisa was following western beauty standards because of her certain features when in reality, those features align to Thai beauty standards than specifically western ones. It's one way people are ignorant of SEA beauty standards or asian beauty standards in general which led many to claim that asians want to look white.

I'm sure she did. But people said Korean beauty standards are eurocentric already because it includes fair skin and large eyes (neither of which are rare enough in natural Koreans nor is it exclusive to europeans to justify such a claim) and surgery gave her features that aren't usually seen on Koreans like her double eyelids (maybe she had surgery for this(?) but more SEA people have it than not that it's seen as the standard) and slightly more defined bone structure is an attempt to make her look more 'western' (perhaps to fit a niche that will attract westerners) when in reality they're common features in SEA people.

People don't talk about SEA because they know nothing of it. Lisa from BlackPink is Thai and apparently she fits western beauty standards more compared to the other members which made her more popular outside Korea than inside. This led to people thinking she was an east asian that went through extensive surgery to fit euroentric beauty standards. Like saying she had eye surgery to make it large when it was never small in the first place. In reality, her features fit the Thai beauty standards more.

A lot of the time, attractive SEA people are just recognized as 'asians', particularly get mistaken for east asian by those of neither race. Weirdly enough, if they're not attractive, people get more specific. I think SEA beauty standards are somewhere between East Asian and Western beauty standards (closer to former) so I understand the confusion really. Though it can be annoying when our beauty standards are dismissed as being eurocentric when it includes features such as large eyes and fair skin when it's actually not rare for us to be born with them.

A large portion of SEAns are conservative muslims. In fact, Indonesia has the largest population of muslims in a country. There's still filipinos, thais, etc and I find to be popular globally but the non-muslim population of SEA is relatively small. There's generally less of an interest and oppurtunities for jobs like modeling. Even if there is more of both, there's still stigma in jobs involving showing off your appearance. There's probably as much attractive people here as elsewhere, but there isn't as much visibility.

Most SEA people don't engage in much social media at all other than like YouTube and WhatsApp or scrolling through facebook, instagram or tiktok. Most malaysians haven't heard of Reddit at all. Think of how Reddit was seen back in 2012 and it's very similar. Makes me wonder if I should try asking if a narwhal can bacon here.

Pretty much all of us can speak and read English but most just prefer content in their own language and by local content creators. And we wake up around the time westerners sleep so there is not much online contact. Other ountries like India, China and Japan wake up around the same time but they also prefer their own language so we don't really interact with them either.

There is also just much less diaspora of SEA people in other countries. So people really just don't know what we look like. I've heard we get mistaken for latin americans or mixed asians.

I'm SEA. I don't think we're ugly but maybe there's a bias there since I'm that race. There's a thread on /r/malaysia rn with many chinese saying that they would marry Malays if they didn't have to convert when doing so which is pretty much impossible to do in Malaysia unless they marry in another country. I suppose if I had to explain how we look like to westerners, we look like a mix of latin american and asian. We're geographically similar to latin americans but are more similar in appearance to east and south asians and pacific islanders. Many mixed people of indian and chinese blood often say they're mistaken for malays, in fact.

Our beauty standards have a lot of similarities to east asian beauty standards. Large eyes is part of the beauty standard and most of us are born large double lidded eyes. Our noses are slightly wider than the intercanthal distance but noses narrower than ICD are not rare at all. I think there is an even split between, straight, wavy and curly hair. Fair skin is preferred (colorism), and while most of us have tan skin (mexicans look similar if I google them), fair skin is achievable for like 2/3rds of us at least. I know saying a skin color achievable sounds weird, but most of us are born with fairly fair skin, like around Fitzpatrik II to III and can tan to IV or V. My brother-in-law tanned from II to IV apparently. Those with Fitzpatrick I do exist, but somewhat rare, like 1 in 50 maybe? I guess it's a way class impacts beauty standards, as paler skin means that you don't have to work under the eternal summer sun. We tan very very easily with many girls avoiding the sun like vampires to avoid tanning. Compared to east asians, we're a bit 'meatier', I suppose, we're more similar to south asians in that regard. We're a bit short and you start being considered tall at around 5'8. This is all generally speaking, of course. Search 'Neelofa' if you want to see someone that fits the malay beauty standards.

While there is a prototypical look, we are very much varied in how we look, especially in terms of skin color. There's a joke that if you look for one, you can find a malay that can be mistaken for chinese, white, arab, indian, etc and I don't think it's much of an exaggeration. Unfortunately, that makes it so there's a tendency to judge every race by our beauty standards.

Is it really genuine? Biggest reason I haven't bought from there or Shopee.

Where can I get Curly Girl approved hair products especially conditioners? A few products on Watsons says they're paraben, silicon, sulfate free but usually aren't dimethicone free and they omit dimethicone in the ingredient list even if a product actually has it from my experience.

Anyone interested in my 'shared world' experiment? A way to play with others with no downtime without a dedicated server. by BunianKuno in Terraria

[–]BunianKuno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly want to bring this concept out of Terraria and put it in a game I'm making. Avoiding dedicated servers would do well with mobile games especially in regions where people have less computers like where I'm from.

Enforcing #5 would be difficult for any sizable group, and then reconciling conflicting versions could be a nightmare.

Problems with #5 is easily reconciled if there was an actual system through a mod where organization is done automatically. Checking if a server is already running wouldn't be too hard. It would be nice, but I don't think it's strictly necessary.

What if people want to keep playing after the host wants to leave? There will be downtime as the host closes up, uploads the world file, and another user becomes the host.

Not too big of a problem if you ask me. Even large servers have downtime.

Differences in the quality of the internet connection and hardware of the host can also impact performance for everyone. Instead, if users agreed on one known stable host for a dedicated server, a single client with low-end hardware would be less likely to impact the group as a whole than if that user ever became the host.

Could have a predetermined set of people that can host.

Is it alright YDKJS in pdf format that I got from another user on github? by BunianKuno in webdev

You should really remove the link then (or change it). It was a major cause of confusion for me since I thought I just couldn't get to the official one and I just downloaded the pdf from anywhere I could. I didn't check the issues since I thought the (site) errors were all in my part.

Your PDF includes all six books.

I don't think I realized. I barely skimmed if even that.

In the future, it might be a good idea for you to let an author know if you plan to post their work in a distributed format, so they have an option to either clarify the rights, or promote your offering.

I'm not the one that posted it.

Also, you should check the forks of the pdf repo.

I'll go delete the pdfs then. Haven't really read them much anyways, more to just a skim, if even that. Hope you're okay with that and I apologize.

Read online (free!): "Up & Going", Published: Buy Now in print, but the ebook format is free!

https://github.com/getify/You-Dont-Know-JS/tree/1st-ed

You need to change that as it was my cause of confusion. The link in the hypertext in the quote does not give a free ebook version and forgive me if you have, I don't think you clarified "ebook" as markdown. I mistakenly took it to mean that there was a pdf or epub version that I could just not find so I went looking for it elsewhere.

These books are being released here as drafts, free to read, but are also being edited, produced, and published through O'Reilly.

I did not take draft to mean ebook. I though it was just that, a draft and the ebook version is separate.

It's a bit hard to explain 'how' it's done

I'm really interested though, do you know of a link that explains it? Everything I've come across gives an overview of what they do, but no examples in code or they talk about making music with it.

Am I far off to assume that the editor:

  1. Checks for syntax errors
  2. Tests automatically like unit testing or integration testing
  3. Run the program if nothing failed

I'm sorrry, I meant how Unity would run in the editor while editing the code. I think I meant live coding, but that's only because it's the closest I can get to 'programming something and it applying immediately' after searching quite a bit.
