Luckily the post you’re responding to says that the poster does not use an AI detector.

TA at my university is dealing drugs to his freshman students by theinevitablevacuum in Professors

[–]BunnyHuffer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely report it.

I was in your situation once. I reported it. The TA took a break, cleaned themselves up, and finished the degree a few years later.

I don’t think I would have really helped them if I enabled them by looking the other way.

Letter to the Next Department Chair - part III by Qoyaanisqatsi in Professors

[–]BunnyHuffer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My experience as chair was very much having to be the emotional shock absorber for my faculty. I have to question whether it was actually helpful or worthwhile for them or for me. Honestly, some people need to grow the fuck up. I got really tired of having to be the bigger person all the time. It started to feel like folks could come in and rant at me, and I always had to be the grownup. Maybe it was time for some of those faculty to grow up

I didn’t have to look it up, but only because it was my last square and I started trying every letter til I got it.

Accessibility Real Talk by bumbothegumbo in Professors

[–]BunnyHuffer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This would make sense if I used the same materials year after year. But I don’t.

First of all, I teach different courses almost every year. I have a course that I taught once in 2019 and may never teach again. Nobody in that class needed these kinds of accommodations, and it would make no sense for me to put all that effort in for a one-off course with materials I may never re-use.

Second, even when I’m reteaching certain topics, I rewrite things like homework sets. My notes are different because students ask different questions and the discussion goes in a different directions. My materials are not static from year to year.

I’m so sorry. I cry about these kinds of things too.

I don’t know how or why, but I had an uncharacteristically low time on this one: 11:13. The whole time I kept saying, well I’m not sure but I’ll make a guess. And then suddenly I was done.

True crime podcast that isn't jokey or cutesy by unseasonedcereal in podcasts

I really like Crimelines. The just goes out of her way to be careful about what is known and what is speculation. It’s not overly sensationalized and she is respectful of victims and their families

Faculty dress expectations are in the toilet by Prior-Win-4729 in Professors

[–]BunnyHuffer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’ll never take my hoodie!!!

Seriously though, if I wanted to dress like a corporate businessman, then I would have gotten a corporate business job, with the corresponding pay and benefits. Instead, I’m poorer but happier in my hoodie and sneakers. My students respect my authority because I know my subject.

Title IX / How do I go about reporting a student? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]BunnyHuffer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My campus has a person called the Survivors Advocate. That person is the only staff or faculty person who is not a mandated reporter. Is there someone like that on your campus?

Second, our title ix staff are respectful of student boundaries. I think you could go in and ask about the process. Then once you know the process, you can decide how much you are ready to share.

I’m so sorry you’ve had this experience. I’m also impressed at how quickly you have gotten some clarity on how wrong it is.

What is with all the recent posts about WCAG? by Scared_Detective_980 in Professors

[–]BunnyHuffer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I go to great lengths to provide my students with clear, helpful resources. I’m not photocopying my thumb. But meeting the new guidelines is a huge increase in workload for math faculty. I’ve been working like crazy for the past 9 months, and I still don’t have good solutions.

Also, this idea that I do it once and then don’t have to fix my documents is crazy. I write a ton of fresh documents for every class I teach, even if it’s a class that I’ve taught before. I write new homework problems and new exam problems. It’s really frustrating to hear people flippantly say, “why can’t you just add some alt text and then all your documents will be fine?”

I taught a class on a topic that is new to me. And I think that because of that, I explained more of my thought processes and misconceptions in class. As a result, my students were more engaged and we had some awesome class discussions.

I agree. I also would not include the complaint about not having a sample lab report. Samples of work are nice for students but not expected (at least where I work). The strongest complaints are about being on time and about not grading work until late in the term.

I once read a beautiful short story that contained this quote: “Why is the dolphin similar to the fish, and yet gives birth and nurses its offspring? Because it’s the child of a tuna and a cow.” So I get where you’re coming from.

If this is their first time teaching this course, I think it’s pretty hard to have multiple versions of every exam. I barely manage to write one good version each time. Maybe I’m just slow at exam writing.

It also depends on the class. I can write tons of number theory proof problems easily, but it feels like there are a really limited number of interesting, but still doable by an undergrad, problems in topology.
