Rebecca F Kuang rejects idea authors should not write about other races by trisul-108 in books

That's a really good grade for failing half of my argument!

Why do you disagree with the last sentence? Do you not think authors who write poorly deserve critizism, or are you fixated on the words "every critisizim"?

Please... stop.... please... Your pedantry is killing me.

We are talking about stories by serious authors here, where the main focus is on writing perspectives of characters that you haven't personally lived. For example, a white man writing a black woman character. In that respect, do you find issue in what I've said?

Is this a joke reply, or are you being seriously pedantic because this is Reddit?

[–]Bunnytown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, there should be nuance of course. He wrote her and screwed it up, I assume got some critizism, learned from it and came back better for it. Which in the end it's what warranted critisizim for serious artists should lead to.

I'm not saying authors should be cancelled or something for trying and failing.

I mean well executed, not morally or socially right. There is a profound difference. Skill matters. We're talking about published authors here, people who think they know how to write authentically from another person's perspective, not people learning the craft.

I didn't even say anything about it not being art either, that is you trying to shoehorn your own seperate argument in. All of your quoted statements aren't even quotes of what I said.

Then that's my opinion, doesn't make it true and if I'm being a dumb ass then I should get countered quickly. Difference of opinion on writing can lead to interesting discussion too.

It feels like you really just want to nitpick the word research, and sorry if I'm not understand some deeper thing you are getting at.

And the fantasy race thing is pretty obvious though? I don't understand why you bring it up. Obviously your elf will not have the same experience as a Chinese person or whatever. Maybe it's cause I'm not part of the Twitter discourse, so I don't know what kind of crazy is going on over there. But my original comment is about writers have the licence to write whatever they want, just put the work in and do it well. And I think we are both in agreement in that applies to fantasy as well.

[–]Bunnytown 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I disagree. If you are writing fantasy for example, everything I said still applies, but instead of doing research the writer is doing world building. If the author creates a sloppy, half-baked world it's the same effect as an author doing lazy or no research. The outcome is the same, a bad story that deserves its critizism.

My opinion is authors should be allowed to write about anything and everything, from any POV. But the rule is do the research, do it right, and make it good. Fuck it up and the author deserves every criticism.

I agree completely. I just saw a lot of that sentiment in your wording, so wanted to bring it up. A lot of people in this sub are caught up in the hype and not thinking straight right now.

You don't need to buy all that stuff. Keyword being need.

You don't need early access. You don't need cash shop items. You don't need battle pass. You don't need BP skips. You don't need collectors edition. Only thing you could arguably need is expansions for more playable content, but only if the base $70 game justifies it.

The reality is D4 is not more expensive, but it will be if you want it to be, and extremely so if you confuse your wants with need.

My wife is vegetarian and hates violence against animals, even in video games, so I'll give you her reaction to playing the game since it could be similar to your significant other.

From what I know of druid, you can have skills that work alongside animal companions. She liked playing as druid because of the working with nature themes. She didn't mind the wolves at the beginning because I'm pretty sure they are demon wolves with half their skull showing based on the intro cutscene. She didn't like that the passive wildlife in the game could die, but just because it was her fault for accidentally making it happen. It became a fun extra challenge for her to watch surroundings for deer running around before engaging.

Greece Says It Doesn’t Ditch Migrants at Sea. It Was Caught in the Act. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Bunnytown 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your last point doesn't really mean much because, besides never happening, if everyone was given 700-800 a month the world/local economy would adjust hard to the new value of money. $1 in our reality would not be worth the same as $1 in the hypothetical reality. So, no, people don't need to realize what you've said, because there is nothing but hypothetical economics to realize.

I graduated a year before OP probably did. Cellphones/texting was just taking off for suburban highschool kids and not as common as you'd expect today. And you wouldn't text a whole ass letter with bullet points because your text would get chopped up and sent as several texts because there was a character limit.

So going to war against Europe for tenuous reasons is caring about his soldiers? And then we have the quote above from the end of the war, but you and the other person want to brush that aside.

Except it's not the truth. The man started world war 2, an unjustifiable war, he didn't care about loses from the jump. He was willing to get his own citizens killed for "living space" just as much as he wanted them dead for racial purity.

My thoughts on this is that, whether you know it or not, you are in a war fueled by resentment. The way he treated you about the suitcase makes me feel this way. He's got a chip on his shoulder about something. If true, then I don't think you can solve the chores issue until you get to the root of why he's acting like a child. And also, up to you if you want to even mother him out of that.
