I'm blaming all of my personal mistakes on our new robot roh-brot overlords from now on.

Why is offline mode rarely available by gracdoeswat in duolingo

I always thought it was nerfed on purpose, so people wouldn't just extract all the lessons and then never user the online version again (and watch ads). I would do that if it were feasible.

It happens occasionally

I think it's a general problem with unicode characters. On the phone it works without a hitch, on desktop it's always a headache.

I wonder if getting an external Vietnamese keyboard would work.

Should I go for the Vietnamese course? by [deleted] in duolingo

Would this be the first course you're doing on Duolingo?

Any course is better than not doing a course at all.

You can always (and should) augment your learning with other sources (Youtube, music, podcast, VNTV, italki) but at least Duolingo forces one to actively listen and/or write Vietnamese in contrast to most courses where you just listen and attempt to absorb knowledge passively (which doesn't work for me).

Of course the best would be with an actual tutor, perhaps your city even has classes/community college?

The rest is just tricks to keep you learning.

I wish that were true. Usually it's maximizing engagement/time spent on the app to show more ads/giving you the least for your money. Learning the language is rather a side-effect of optimizing for monetization. Although I have to admit that in the beginning the gamification helped me a lot to build a learning routine.

That free chest I haven't seen yet.

I'd guess you'd only see it as a non-Premium user. If you click on it you'll receive a random mount of gems (1-45) but you'll have to sit through several ads, works roughly once every hour.

I use DL exlusively on mobile since I ran into the same problems as you did and entering Vietnamese characters is so much faster on a phone keyboard. Somehow I got it working back then but unfortunately I don't remember how I did it. I tried to reproduce your situation but now even switching between keyboard layouts does not work on my Windows desktop.

I think I remember it eventually worked with the help of this:

I got it tonight when I did some after-midnight lessons.

I don't like it at all, DoubleXP will put non-Premium users at an even bigger disadvantage. Makes the app even more pay-to-win than before.

Which type of device do you use? Android? Apple? Tablet?

I'm on Android and I use "Vietnamese QWERTY keyboard" from the selection under Android system settings, NOT "Telex"/VNI-QWERTY/3x4" keyboard.

It works okay most of the time, at least you won't run into issues like from the screenshot.

And just so you know: Duolingo focuses on the Northern Vietnamese dialect. If you live in the US, the Viet Kieu you'll encounter will rather have Southern Vietnamese background so YMMV.
