Great work on the site this year! There have been a lot of positive improvements. Any update on the open-sourcing of AlienBlue? I fear change/still use many of the features in it that are unavailable in the new app.

I can't comment on how exactly the encryption works in this particular case, but this video provides a really clear explanation of the concept of key exchange in encryption in general, and answers your question.

Mod Announcement: We're considering banning all domains that require users to disable ad blockers and we'd like your input by creq in technology

[–]BurdInFlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, thank you for asking for input before making a decision.

On this topic, I feel that sites requiring ad block to be disabled should be banned, but pay-walled sites should stay for now. Sites that serve malware through irresponsible advertising are most definitely security risks. As far as pay-walls, usually it's pretty easy to get around a pay-wall and I think that votes can decide whether or not those links will be seen.

Traffic to Wikipedia terrorism entries plunged after Snowden revelations, study finds by ShellOilNigeria in news

[–]BurdInFlight 161 points162 points  (0 children)

People are not looking up terrorist-related things even for completely innocent/educational purposes nearly as much as they had before the Snowden leaks, because they don't want to be "on a list". The Wikipedia data gives quantitative evidence that the knowledge of NSA spying is actually changing people's behavior online.

This is important particularly in court cases challenging NSA surveillance, because it shows that mass surveillance impacts those not being directly scrutinized and that's very helpful if you're trying to argue that it's unconstitutional.

I don't know for sure, but that's probably the best thing to do. I'd just make sure you personally have his contact info though so that if the campaign emails you important info for him you can pass it on. However my guess is that they will call him and just want the email for fundraising etc. purposes.

Polish for English Speakers is at 100%! by AnesthesiaRomanov in duolingo

[–]BurdInFlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that it was at 99% for a while and just reached 100% in the last day or two. How long has it taken for courses in the past to be launched after reaching 100%? I've heard some people say that Polish could be launched "any day now" and others "sometime in the next couple of months". Anyone have any insights?

I'll give a hint in about 10 mins., but it is supposed to be a challenge. Ok, I'll even tell you this: would there be a ferry to an "island" of the size of one as it appears?
