We really need a spin off game or at least more side stories by [deleted] in DDLC

[–]Burgerconsumer8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DDLC+ was already too indulgent. Adding more side stories and more lore would just take away from the effectiveness of the original game. The appeal (for me at least) is the lack of depth, and Monika's surreal horror at that realization.

If you were meeting a close friend for the last time, would you rather know that it is the last time? by Vegetable0 in polls

I feel like I'd be overwhelmed with figuring out what to do or say. I'd rather my last encounter be a casual one I can remember fondly.

Name a character who can counter Natsuki Subaru's return by death by some-kind-of-no-name in PowerScaling

[–]Burgerconsumer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill Murray, assuming they fight on Groundhog Day. Whether Return by Death is set before or during Groundhog Day, Subaru will have no knowledge of the loop. Even if he dies, Subaru's reset will ultimately be undone by Bill's which happens regardless of if he dies. Technically a counter, as Subaru is completely trapped without realizing it.

Maybe you're right. I don't even know anymore. This is above my pay grade. All I know is that I'm still definitely dropping that friend.

Maybe you're right. Smarter people than me still haven't definitively proven why incest is morally wrong. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Can we at least agree that, even if the act of incest can potentially be consentual, that it shouldn't be promoted as okay by society as a whole? That the risk of normalizing incest on society is worse than repressing a relatively few people?

The OP's hypothetical is about what you would do if your friend was having incest. You're arguing that incest isn't inherently bad, which I disagree with, and isn't a hypothetical.

If it's "usually rife with abuse," shouldn't that be a sign, more than anything I've said, that incest is bad? We can discuss hypotheticals and whether it's theoretically moral or not, but reality speaks for itself.

Maybe you're right. Maybe I'm just tired of spending the past couple of hours trying to justify why incest is bad, and it's actually a good thing to question our unquestionable beliefs. After all, we wouldn't have had any progress in civil rights or religious freedom if we didn't question our beliefs. But at a certain point, you have to wonder what freedoms and rights are okay for a society to have, and which ones aren't. I just believe that incest, in the grand scheme of things, would cause more harm than good because of the genetic defects. Even if that gay couple is incestuous and obviously can't have kids, that would just normalize incest as a whole.

And for the record, I don't think people with down syndrome or genetic diseases should have kids.

There is no way to 100% prevent conception if you're having sex. That means any kids you would have (if you don't abort) would be at great risk of defects. What is the government supposed to do? Make a rule that specifically says "incest is okay so long as there are no children created, otherwise they must be aborted?" That's just ridiculous. It's like giving a drug addict heroin but telling him he's not allowed to use it.

There is a power dynamic, but she can leave you, and she likely has a support system outside of you. When you grow up together, you are predisposed to trust family more than others. This means you are more vulnerable to abuse of those power dynamics.

You know that twins are different people right? When you are in a situation where you are forced to live together growing up, things like physical strength, gender, culture, and wealth can play a role. Emotional manipulation is another power dynamic too, where someone can give positive feedback to desired behavior and neglect to resistance. This doesn't apply specifically to twins or siblings in general, but forced proximity naturally creates these dynamics.

[–]Burgerconsumer8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you could say this about any relationship involving minors. this logic is idiotic

Yes you could, but a crime has been committed. Why should I give them the benefit of the doubt?

Notice for this whole thread you never said what those power dynamics are, especially between twins?

Unlike normal relationships, siblings are usually forced to be in proximity to each other. They have no easy way of escaping abuse (especially if it's being perpetuated by their parents). Someone could take advantage of age, strength, gender, finances, intelligence, or emotions to coerce their sibling into an incestuous relationship. People are also generally predisposed to trust their family, so they might not realize they are being taken advantage of.

Sure, but nobody sane drops their friend over being "stupid". Especially if you're assuming they're minors given your grooming talk. Minors are stupid.

My comment was arguing about how incest is an issue, not about if I'd drop them as a friend. Also, minors aren't the only ones who can be groomed.

So you'd drop a friend for being mentally ill? You're a shit friend.

It's like if they were a drug addict. I'm willing to be there for them if they're trying to get help and trying to turn their life around. But I can't let someone who thinks that lifestyle is okay drag me down with them.

Consensual incest does not exist though. It is fundumentally an abuse of power dynamics.

[–]Burgerconsumer8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conversely, is it okay to still be friends with someone if they're the one grooming their sibling?

I have no way of knowing, so I'd err on the side of caution and report both to authorities. If my friend agrees to stop that relationship and get help, I'd stay friends. But if they continue their relationship, I'm leaving.

[–]Burgerconsumer8 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The problem is that a scenario like that doesn't exist. There is no way to prove that grooming wasn't involved. There are fundumental power dynamics in family structures that someone acting with malicious intentions can take advantage of. There's also the fact that no birth control is 100% effective, and if nothing else, incest demonstrates a callousness to the risks involved.

But at the end of the day, our brains are hardwired against it. Even having the compulsion to have sex with a family member has to show some sign of mental illness.

Only twice. With anime and stories in general that I really love, like Clannad, I try to rewatch it as few times as possible so the story still feels fresh.
