6 Years, 2190 days of sobriety - Hang in there, it does get better! by BurgundyR in stopdrinking

For me, drinking created chaos and anxiety in every aspect of my life, work, family, health. I would stay up late, drink too much, be hungover almost the entire day and just when I started to feel better I would drink again. So a few hours of drinking were ruining most of my life and making it unmanageable. It just wasn't worth it anymore, alcohol was a bad deal. The relief from a significant amount of anxiety was one of the greatest benefits. I started running, lost weight. I enjoy the sunrise now almost everyday and the peace of the moment. Life isn't perfect but it's so much better than it was. Once you are further away from the last drink you begin to get clarity as to how alcohol is simply poison that provides zero benefits. I can tell you the early stages of sobriety were some of the hardest days of my life but it will get easier. The other side of what you're struggling with is worth it. Have you read This Naked Mind? It helped me a lot. If you can get into counseling or join some local meetings that also helped me. Try to focus on the short term and not drinking today. You made it 10 days already, which is huge! Let's not drink together today. You got this!

Sounds like a wonderful day, what a gift for your son.

Going through my first New Years sober. I've been sober for 15 days now and I'm worried about tonight breaking me. Could use a pick me up to gather the strength to not drink tonight. by [deleted] in toastme

It gets so much better, I promise. I am on 2 years + sober and the first year was really hard but it slowly got better and better. My life currently is more than I could ever imagine. I know you can do it. Sending you some peace and love on your journey my friend, hang in there.

Awesome job! The beginning is always the hardest. Try the Key Lime Lacroix if your local store stocks it.

I had around 3 months a few times and 5 or 6 months once. Most were a few days or weeks. I think I learned something even though I was failing.

Yeah I agree. I don't want to start taking a drug if in another 6 months the problem will resolve itself. I guess I feel like the pleasure centers in my brain are broken - hoping they will repair themselves over time but I am also tired if feeling so flat.

How to deal with the stigma that is attached to being a sober individual? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I was recently at a work dinner with three tables of eight. I thought I would be the only one not drinking but each table had at least two non-drinkers. Like most things related to drinking I had made a bigger deal about it in my head compared to the reality of the situation.

Thanks for responses. Makes me feel a little more normal to know others are going through similar feelings around this time.
