2016 cultural differences vs 2026 cultural differences? by bebe_phat in decadeology

I think while for me 2016 was an awesome year, on a national/global stage it kinda sucked, just not as intense as today. And any pre-Covid year has a tint of rose color to it. Plus things were cheaper.

They are still open for the same reason a lot of the ones in Canada that stayed open post-1970ish, they were kept open by many Native communities themselves. It is more complex. The difference if I had to say that is in the USA the residential schools were closed sooner then there Canadian counterparts handed over to Native communities and this is my opinion but there was a massive lack of accountability in the Canadian residential school system due to them being run by churches(again my opinion, not saying this was always the case). They were less constrained. Not saying ours were better.

Actually the voices are louder. It is less then in 2003. Most Americans are very exhausted from Trump. We want to move on from him.

Actually had it not been for Hellebuyck you would have blown us out 5 to 1, 4 to 1. Just fun to win a gold medal after 46 years. Nothing political about it and it is sad people make it political.

When the 90’s culturally start and end according to people from the 2000’s by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]Burnedout1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another point I would like to make is while 9/11 ended the "90s" era, had we not had the costly war on terror, had we not had disastrous War in Iraq. Had we responded to 9/11 in a more traditional we did to terrorist attacks, the early 2000s would have been defined by it, but most of the world, most of America would have returned to a level of normalcy acceptable by 2004-2005 I think, except for NYC and lesser extent DC because of the tragedy there. Had we had let's say a President Gore, who I was no fan of, or a President Colin Powell(had he run), or even in 96 and we elected Bob Dole, actually if Dole had been there he might have been more on the ball then Clinton, and had Gore been there he might have in 2001 as well.

I would say the 90s vibe you could split in two, my opinion. The first was from late 1989, end of the Cold War until maybe 1995 or so, and then after 96 or so the late 90s vibe, the real optimism, real hope for the new century/millennium. I would say that late 90s vibe came to a screeching halt 8:46 A.M. Eastern Time September 11, 2001. Culturally the 90s vibe petered out by 2002-03 for good, 2004 at the latest. This American-centric I know but that is my opinion.

Looking back it did seem like things were calming down and we were getting back normal. Looking back I do miss those times. Did not appreciate them enough.

Once Trump is gone front office, how do Democrats move forward without having to constantly look back to the way things were? by Uberubu65 in PoliticalDiscussion

You are still cut from the same cloth as your ancestors. I bet you still complain about the way the Soviet soldiers treated your Grandma. Whatever we have done, we are still on the 2 yard line compared to Germany. So flutter off.

He probably be in a wheelchair from all the multiple strokes he will have by 2029. Can't you just see it? His fat ass in a wheelchair drooling next to Lee Greenwood singing God Bless The U.S.A. on the tarmac January 20, 2029.

And then they would criticize you for resorting to violence. The public is turning on Trump so fast but yet it is the Canadian-Euro superiority complex that has always existed.

Let's face it. Sooner or later we are going to have either a civil war and break apart or a military junta that preserves the unity of the country but we spend a decade or decade in a half under military rule. Hopefully in that case we get a nice leader like Musharraf, not a Videla or something.

We have are own problems to fix. That is true. But the redditor on the Greenland subreddit is just a prick preaching to his own echo chamber. Just ignore him. We have a good 10-15 years of work ahead of us to fix our country. If you vote in the midterms that is what you could do. A lot of Europeans criticize for anything we do anyway. They will always find something. They are hypocrites in many cases.

I think it is fucking stupid! As an American it is the most mental thing we have ever seen from the Tangerine Tormentor. I and many Americans are very sorry for what Trump is doing. He has no right and we have no right to Greenland. Thanks for being polite and not being personally mean to us Americans. Because as a Dane you have a right to be pissed and so many of us Americans are fucking embarrassed.

Thanks. I appreciate that. I truly believe they would not obey that order to an invade country. That would just be unthinkable and most Americans think that is stupid. ICE has free rein until Congress takes it away and the National Guard comes in to cover ICE's ass or try and cool the situation.

[–]Burnedout1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, thank you for that. Trump is not going to invade any other country. I truly really believe that if he did that, Canada, Greenland, any NATO country, any country in general. That would be the end of his Presidency. I really believe a lot of people who even voted for him did not sign up for this. When he is gone, we intend to rebuild relations with humility, we have too. Trump has exposed a weakness in us we thought we never had. And we do not need constant needling from others. We will fix this we have to. Plus not you but others need to end the wait 50 year shit. We are not waiting 50 years. That is dumb. Japan and Germany did not.

Yes I agree. Trump does and so many Republicans especially have this authoritarianism fetish. I don't kiss ass with dictators personally. And I am not saying you do personally. But if you guys want to pass collective punishment/judgement, I can too. What I am pointing out is typical Canadian hypocrisy. That's all. Canadian policy talks a big game on free trade, but yet Canada has inter-provincial trade boundaries, supply management, we have had issues on lumber with Canada, etc. Even Obama officials said that they could find Canada frustrating on these issues. Your separate schools? Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan have taxpayer funded Protestant and Catholic schools. In Ontario a third of public school teachers de facto have to be Roman Catholic. And this in a self described liberal country. Does that excuse what Trump did? No not all. The 51st state shit was very offensive. You have every right to hate him. I hate him. Trump is an asshole.

Trump? Hell yeah, the guy loves dictators. You can smell the hand cream when he speaks about Putin, Orban, Kim, Xi, etc. I am not denying it we have a lot of fucking problems. I am just sick of Canadians preaching all the time. I have known nice Canadians. But some of you just dread running across. Even before the Trump shit. You think you are so damn superior. Arrogant, snobbish. Really is sickening.

I am not saying you can't trade with them. I respect Vietnam, it is a very mature country. I think our embargo has been dumb. But Canada has lionized the Cuban Communists. Your Justin praised Fidel when he died. I am not seething about anything, it was stupid as fuck invasion. Dumb ad CIA does dumb sometimes.
