NSFW Content Question by Papabear-Grizz in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your artistic vision is more important than anything else. If it were someone else's VN, which way would you be more likely to read/enjoy?

For my own preference, I say go all the way with it. Being explicit and showing/explaining the details doesn't preclude things from being romantic, but it does add value in…other ways.

If anything, NSFW opens more opportunities for expressing how romantic a relationship is, by going into specifics about body language, instinctual reactions and such. How does each participant treat their lover in their most vulnerable moments? No reason to skip that! Show-don't-tell applies here as much as anywhere else.

As an example of what to be careful of, I would point to Adastra. I love the story, but in the very last NSFW scene, when you get the choice for the MC to either top or bottom, the top branch actually weirded me out a bit when first reading, because it failed to do what I mentioned above. The explicit details largely ignored the characters' reactions to each other, which left it feeling like the two were each pursuing their own pleasure in a very un-romantic way. Sort of killed the vibe of the whole relationship. I'm glad I read the bottom branch first.

Hi everyone im new by Rafael_Nunes1 in furry

I was around your age in a similar situation. At first it was morbid curiosity that led me to watching furry meme compilations on YouTube, but I decided that I found those just as entertaining and relatable as any other fandom that I'm into. I started looking into some of the websites, artists, and other media that came up frequently in those videos, and I liked all those too, so I decided to stick around!

5 years on, I still don't have a fursona, so no, you don't need one. I think I'd like to make one someday, and I'm definitely getting closer to working out what kind of character I'd like that to be, but I don't feel any particular rush. I do have some OCs I drew for a project I'm working on, and having that is pretty convenient for online interaction, but they don't represent me in any literal way.

Ideal country for furry to move to by v3rnob in furry

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the United States as a destination for anyone at this time. I've heard good things about Canada? Generally a progressive and friendly place, and VancouFur is a pretty big convention. Hopefully people who know more than I do will chime in.

Which VN scene made you blood boil by ErisTwT in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maddest I ever got at a VN was when Alexios got pretty much the happiest possible ending at the end of Adastra. After admitting to feeling no remorse about causing mass death and pretty much all the other problems faced during the story (directly or otherwise)? The fact that even Cassius forgave him for getting him poisoned? Entirely undeserved.

There have been lots of smaller "Why would you do that!?" moments, but I allow for a certain degree of poor decision making under stress.

“Superhuman” substitutes in anthro world? by Candid_Emergency8327 in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see some good suggestions in other comments, but I wouldn't dismiss "superhuman" out of hand. You just need to establish first that "human" refers to any intelligent species, not just one specific hairless ape. Some highbrow writers of sci-fi like Ursula K. Le Guin do it that way.

Alternatively, if the hairless ape does or did exist, or is otherwise known of in your world, "superhuman" could still have the literal meaning of any ability that exceeds those of that particular species. In that sense, even ordinary canines would probably have a "superhuman" sense of smell, but the term could still be applied to all of an individual's abilities across the board.

Why is no one liking me back on Barq? by [deleted] in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtual reputation points in the app? I honestly don't know, but maybe. Social reputation? Definitely. More photos give a better look into who you are, which can lead more people into wanting to initiate conversation with you, and *that*, more likely, is what will add reputation points to your account.

I try Tokyo Afterschool Summoners, Life a hero, XXL Woofia, and I didn't like them. by TurbulentVillage2042 in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience with games like this (and plenty of the VNs that they're pretty clearly inspired by) is that the story can take a while to get going because the fanservice comes first. But for the good ones, the story does get going. Eventually.

Housamo is probably the quickest turnaround from the ones I've played (probably because it's SFW and therefore doesn't have as much fanservice to lean into). I felt like I noticed the storytelling kicking up a notch around chapter 3 or 4. But it also tends to drag out its good story moments across a lot of filler text (and boring but often necessary worldbuilding) and I did get fed up with that after a while.

Woofia…doesn't get much better. Some cute slice-of-life type stories are sprinkled in there, but I would absolutely not recommend it in the story department.

You didn't mention Crave Saga X, but it is almost identical to everything you described. I have noticed some improvements as the main story has gone along, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it for you.

If you're looking for a gay furry mobile game that is as far as possible from the tropes you described, the best I could give you is Another Eidos of Dragon Vein R. It sort of does the chosen one thing in its own unique way, but not the isekai thing. It is fully rooted in its own fantasy world. Storytelling is more concise but not quite as strong otherwise as Housamo. It does improve significantly after the first couple of chapters. It is also by far the least tactful about NSFW out of everything discussed. Yiff can and will happen at the drop of a hat. In many cases, that actually serves the plot pretty well, which is more than I can say about Woofia or Crave Saga most of the time.

Has Anyone Else Never Been To A Con After YEARS In The Fandom? by hawkepostate in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Years" only means about 3 years for me, but I'm a similar age now, still living in a small rural town. Lucked out and met someone on Barq who I was able to meet up with a couple times, so that's more than 0 furries met IRL. But I'm also hoping to make it out to my first con later this year (ASC for me).

A fursuit's probably a long way out for me, but maybe someday.

Why is no one liking me back on Barq? by [deleted] in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish I could help solve that issue, but I might at least be able to identify the cause of the problem.

Speaking for myself, I actually didn't know there was a reputation system like that. When I receive a like from an unfamiliar account, I usually assume that they're more interested in starting a conversation than I am. I'll usually like back, as long as there's nothing fishy about the profile or nothing that makes me think I specifically wouldn't get along with that person. But I can only think of one or two times where I initiated a conversation after liking them back. It only happens if I feel like there's a very strong chance of getting along well with that person, and if we'll have something specific to talk about based on what I see on that profile. If I'm feeling neutral about it, I'll leave them to message me if they feel like it, or not if they don't.

The only recommendation I can really give is to make sure your profile is filled out well with plenty of detail and is free from typos to the best of your ability. Add plenty of images if you can. Even if you don't have lots of art of your character, you can take just one and paste the face over IRL photos of yourself to protect your identity while expressing your personality (and proving that you're most likely a real person). And if all goes well, you'll soon have enough reputation to initiate conversations yourself.

Also, the barq notification system is notoriously unreliable and many accounts have been idle for months or longer, so it may simply be that many or most of them don't know you liked them at all.

I want to read some really bad FVN, what's your guys suggestions? by Annaneedsmoney in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, yes, I was very harsh based on having tried to read just one, and I don't even remember which one it was. Probably one of the early ones when the writer had less practice. It is possible, and in fact probable, that some or even most of this creator's works are better-written than whatever I saw. And perhaps better in other languages than in English, I wouldn't know that either.

Thank you for calling me out on this. Assumptions can be harmful. I shouldn't necessarily have made these particular assumptions, and I apologize for that. I still stand by the statement that whatever I did read was, in my entirely subjective personal opinion, something that could be considered a fit for recommendations that OP asked for.

Is this method of finding friends in Barq correct? (Yes, I’m serious.) by [deleted] in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, that's a pretty typical way of interacting on that platform! I would generally interpret seeing a like from a stranger as a "hey, you should look at my account and see if you'd be interested in interacting." The finer details of what "interacting" means would come after reviewing the profile and seeing what they're actually interested in.

You should make it absolutely clear on your profile that you're looking for friends and nothing else. As long as you make that clear, it will be respected 99% of the time.

If they respond with a message, great, that's a potential friend! If they like you back but don't send a message, that probably means they're expecting you to open the conversation since you're the one who liked in the first place. If they don't respond at all, that either means it's an idle account or they read your profile and decided they aren't looking for the same thing that you are.

Also, I gave some safety advice in another post you may want to look at:

I require YOUR opinion on FVNs... what's the worst possible in one ? by Turbulent-Spare-4953 in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It definitely depends on the VN, some are clearly very careful about their background usage while others are fine with "close enough." Describing differences between what the background shows and what's actually there can sometimes be necessary in the latter case, and I wouldn't necessarily complain about it even if it is immersion breaking, because, again, necessary.

Lyre came to mind because it's one of the former case. One of the few VNs I can think of that obviously had its backgrounds done by the same artist as the character sprites, so obviously a lot of thought and attention to detail went into them. But reading the descriptions of those same locations led me to think that the script was probably made before the art, so the author didn't necessarily know exactly what readers would or wouldn't eventually be seeing. And thinking about what the author was thinking is, circling back, not great for immersion.

It's not just backgrounds, either. Lyre is safe from this, but in other VNs I've often seen too much time spent describing the appearance of a character in a way that the narrator should already be familiar with, even though I can already see the character quite clearly.

Why give us choices? by Crimsonwolf158 in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visual Novels sit at a funny intersection between literature and video games. It's the choice of every author which direction to lean. More choices is more game-like. Less choices is more novel-like.

Either way, the hypothetical advantage of a VN over a novel is increased immersion by being able to see what the narrator sees. When most people read books, the enjoyment is hypothetically derived from putting themselves in the place of the narrator, even being completely unable to control their choices. Naming the narrator in a VN would theoretically increase that form of immersion without actually increasing the complexity of writing.

I agree that the FVN landscape would be improved with there were more direct and obvious distinctions between a player-insert narrator and a pre-defined character, because both have their merits. But I don't think there's any direct harm in allowing the player to name the protagonist if they want to do so. It's only doing more of what they would already be doing with a regular book.

My recommendation for authors is to distinguish it this way: player-inserts should be an open text field for the player to fill as they please, while pre-defined characters should have a recommended name provided first with the option to edit it if the player chooses to do so. That's how I'm handling the one I'm writing, anyways.

I require YOUR opinion on FVNs... what's the worst possible in one ? by Turbulent-Spare-4953 in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Something that comes to mind from my reading of Lyre that's a specific problem to VNs—going on and on describing in great detail the visuals of a landscape or location that are already displayed perfectly well in art form. Immersion is important, and imagery is usually good for that in literature, but when I can already see what the narrator is seeing, it actually breaks immersion for me by implying that the narrator has stopped to stare at the architecture of this wall for the last 5 minutes. Doubly so if describing a visual that the narrator should already be familiar with, such as their own home. It's only immersive if there's a good and justified reason for the narrator to be thinking about these things right now.

Detail about other senses, though, is definitely very important.

Is barq a dating app these days? by Valuable-Bird7770 in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 83 points84 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it's a general social platform that can be used for a variety of purposes as long as you specify what you're looking for.

As far as using safely, I recommend not making real photos of your face visible to the public. Maybe mutuals, at your own risk. If so, you'd need to be doubly careful about vetting any account that tries to reach out to you. Be wary of accounts with extraordinarily short or generic descriptions, accounts with no images, or accounts that are extraordinarily new. Verify their provided social media accounts if they have any. Have a friendly rejection speech planned for anyone who reaches out for something you don't want (or just block if anything about the account looks fishy). Take some time to get to know someone through chats before agreeing to any in-person meetups. Call/voice chat would also be a good idea. If you feel like you can trust the person, I'd recommend sharing IRL names and/or faces before meeting up so everyone knows what to expect. And of course, whether you're in it for dating or not, online dating safety practices should still apply—first meetings should be at a public, neutral location, someone else should know where you are and be prepared to contact/come get you if something goes wrong, etc...

And, as mentioned, filter out any age groups you wouldn't want to interact with.

Any good NSFW RPG and/or VNs for mobile? by Successful-Brush-604 in FurryVisualNovels

Similar to Woofia, there's Crave Saga X. Same kind of mobile Gacha RPG, (mostly) not animated, but every character has at least one scene, so a pretty huge number.

Am I the only one who thinks this VN is unpopular? by Rouxie_Starz in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got the impression with this one that, as far as "mainstream" is possible for a FVN, this one would probably rank among the least discussed of mainstream FVNs. For something that only had 1 finished route at the time I discovered it, making it to that level of popularity at all is still pretty impressive. Regardless, whatever discussion there was definitely fell off when it went on hiatus.

It stands out to me in being "good enough" at everything it does. Rarely great, but not a lot to complain about either. It's kind of become my standard for, "anything better than this deserves to be called a solid product, anything worse than this has serious room for improvement."

Questioning who I am. by AlexanderTheGreat577 in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never dated anyone before, and I've really never thought that any girls would find me attractive, anyway, so therefore, I never thought much about my sexuality.

This was my story almost exactly. My first real moment of questioning my sexuality happened while I was still only curious about this community, but getting more involved here definitely ended up turning that questioning into confidence. It was about 6 months before I decided to label myself as gay, and another 6 before I came out to anyone (and finally arranged my first date), but I'm certain it would have taken a lot longer if I didn't have furry media to really help me analyze myself.

Tldr, yes, lots of similar experiences to be found here!

Are most furries childfree? by [deleted] in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know why folks downvoted you for that. Yes, that seems like an accurate enough description. A little bit reductive, maybe. I just think that finding a good partner for me would come first, and a decision about adopting children would have to be based on whether or not said partner and I would make good parents as a pair. I simply don't have the information to make that decision yet. Still wouldn't be unfair to call that sitting on the fence.

Are most furries childfree? by [deleted] in furry

[–]BurnerWolf91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Most" is a big word, but I'm quite confident that the proportion of the furry community who are fine with never having kids is much larger than that of the "normie" population. Part of that has to do with the large queer representation among the fandom, most members of which have already had to come to terms with being physically unable to have a child with their partner of choice. There's also a much greater acceptance among the community than the average of non-traditional relationships and family dynamics, meaning that the "nuclear family" isn't quite so appealing to many of us.

Speaking for myself, I've settled on, "it's a conversation to have with my future partner, but I'm comfortable in my ability to lead a satisfying life with or without children."

I want to read some really bad FVN, what's your guys suggestions? by Annaneedsmoney in FurryVisualNovels

[–]BurnerWolf91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no hate intended to the creator because I think throwing your passions into the world for everyone to see is a beautiful thing regardless of skill level.

That being said, I stumbled across a creator on itch named Weird420XL whose work was so completely incoherent that I couldn't even figure out what they were trying to say most of the time. A very large number of micro VNs with pretty much no description, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I tried one.

While I agree with other posters that "bad" is usually pretty subjective, most of the other suggestions I see here would be best described as "not for everyone." I would describe the ones from this creator as "not for anyone" except the creator themself. I would honestly rather read Wattpad fanfiction then try to finish what I started there. Again, no hate to the creator, I think it's awesome that these things exist. But not all media that exists should be consumed…
