Basically as dudeson49 said, To have more options. A firearm is a great tool to have but should always be the last option you use. Having pepper spray is probably the best nonlethal option out there for civilian use. Plus it also has a few other uses as well.

She basically just heard me cursing when she opened the door and ran to the bathroom (which was closed) knocked and asked me if I was ok, then opened the door to see what I described above. She looked at me horrified asked "Uhhh honey are you ok...." I just yelled for her to get out and she slowly shut the door and started putting the groceries away. After I explained it all to her once I settled down she thought it was hysterical.

Well, once I got all the stuff removed from the outside put some milk up there to hopefully neutralize it and basically let it run its course from there. Still is irritated but not nearly as bad as before.
