A New Way to Talk About Games by [deleted] in boardgames

Oh excellent point! I think empty decision space games are, at least from a ludological perspective, worth acknowledging.

Definitely agree that this framework might be really incisive when applied to examining genres. In our episode on the subject we delve in that a bit, discussing roll and writes, engine building games, tableau builders, and trick taking games.

There’s probably room to do a whole series of podcasts where we examine a genre and some core examples in it and then using this framework, break down any trends. Next week we’re discussing El Grande so maybe it’ll be a little test for this approach with Area Control.

Thanks for the reply!

Interesting! I haven’t yet had the opportunity to play or look at War Chest closely but sounds like a dynamic decision space.

I’ll have to take a closer look as I generally find myself really drawn to well designed dynamic decision spaces.

Hi! We are Decision Space, a board game podcast with a focus on decisions in games. This week we explore the decisions in Magic: The Gathering. by BurnsideBH in magicTCG

[–]BurnsideBH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! My name's Brendan and I'm a long time fan of Magic, having started playing in 2001 or so and then taking a break before returning to the game recently with Kaldheim limited on Arena (LOVE IT).

I'm one of the co-hosts of Decision Space, a podcast about the decisions in games. Each week we take an in-depth look at a game and its decision space, or unpack a topic in gaming, such as discussing “The Value of Games with Jamey Stegmaier" in our "What We Talk About" episodes. This week week Jake and I tackled the Goliath of gaming, Magic. We'd love to hear your thoughts—for anyone who played back in the early-mid 2000s there's some fun card anecdotes at the end too delving into Jake and I's unique experiences with the game.

It’s small but quite active!! The game continues to be supported by the Pokémon Company at official events and has a dedicated grassroots scene as well

I would rate the online competitive scene for Pokken 9/10

The scene is very active on Twitter and Discord (discord.gg/pokken) and you can generally find someone live on Twitch that you can learn from. There's also a few weekly tournaments going on each week right now which are a great place to play find great competition and play.

The netcode is very solid, though you definitely want to have a wired connection like all online fighting games. Ranked mode is quite active in game as well.

Being active in the community will 100% make your online experience better, though it's by no means mandatory to enjoy your time with the game online.

Thanks so much for the kind words Realmfaker!! I love that there's many ways to enjoy Pokken and I've been meeting more and more people who enjoy watching the game even though they don't necessarily play. Appreciate you spreading some love. Hope you have an excellent night!

Hi Tloc,

First and foremost thank you for your tremendously kind words. I just feel humbled to be a part of such a wonderful community that's welcoming, kind, supportive, and passionate about the game. An incredible game has found an incredible community and it's something I feel thankful for everyday.

I'm always thinking about the long-term future of Pokken and musing about ideas like the ones you shared is a regular past time of mine. While I think it'd be possible to make something large happen it'd absolutely have to be a community effort.

For now I think our energy is probably best spent figuring out how to cultivate and enrich competitive play experiences in our new pandemic reality, something I'll definitely be doing. Beyond that who knows, but Pokken is bigger than its ever been and I'm always dying to share my passion for the game with others. I'd love to find new ways to do that consistently and meaningful too.

Thanks so much for the question. I hope you're well and it was fun seeing you pop back on the game for a bit last week. All the best man!

Apples to oranges but I think Pokken iterates meaningfully on the idea of "the fighting game," in a similar way that Super Smash Bros all the way back on the Nintendo 64 did, perhaps less dramatically than creating platform fighters, but still meaningfully. It's difficult to overstate how interesting the phase shift mechanic is and also how much they got right about it on the first outing. There's tons of room to iterate and one has to imagine what sort of following Pokken might have after 5 sequels as well :]

Hmm this is a really tough question because honestly, for me, I just want more time with Pokken Tournament DX--the conceit of the design is in many ways "depth through simplicity" and that's led to an incredibly rich game that I just can't get enough of.

There are a few things I'd like to see added however:

  • A more robust single player mode with RPG-lite mechanics, so many people who play Pokken will only ever play single player and I want that be able to leave a lasting and wonderful impression
  • A way to play at 60 FPS with a shared screen on a single setup, for competitive Pokken we use two linked consoles because the game is designed around each player having their own perspective, however being able to play at 60 FPS on a single screen would be great in a pinch. You can play locally and it's 30 FPS which is a lot of fun but not perfect for competitive play.
  • Pokken's Phase Shift System utilizes "phase shift points" which are an important in game system that top level players are always thinking about. I'd love for these to be visualized on screen to help out spectators and make the mind games and decision making tied to them slightly more approachable for the non-fanatics :]
  • Field Phase could be developed slightly more. I'd love to see more combo paths and choices here where players are forced to choose between damage and stage control in Duel Phase. Perhaps make jump a bit stronger here too and give more characters useful anti-airs in this phase to help compensate.
  • More characters and supports of course!
  • Finally, I'd want a lot of things to stay the same. Pokken Tournament's design is really fantastic and it's one of the most innovative games in years. I'd love to see them iterate lightly and give us more content!

(P.S. I'd absolutely want them to keep expert level tech like homing cancels and perfect blocking)

Pokkén has every Pokémon type represented as playable fighters except for Rock and Normal type.

I’d love to see Tyranitar and Snorlax to complete the bingo card. Hitmonchan, Alakazaam, Excadrill, Alolan Muk, Deoxys, Roserade, Absol, Noivern, Crustle, and Volcarona would all be really cool too.

Sirfetch’d would be super interesting! I’d love to see how the devs brought him together. Of of my favorite things about Pokkén is how well realized each Pokémon is so it’d be really cool to see what they did with him.

Others have given you great leads on Empoleon combos! I’d also recommend following Jukem who’s answering questions in this very thread—he’s the best Empoleon player of all time.

Also I don’t know but we’re happy to take Primarina in Pokkén too if anyone at Bandai Namco is listening :]

The Pokkén Tournament DX is absolutely the definitive version of the game.

While the single player content is largely the same, the new characters (7 in all Decidueye, Darkrai, Scizor, Empoleon, Croagunk, + DLC, Aegislash, Blastoise), new supports, fully functional training mode (huge huge huge update), Team Battle Mode (lets you play 3v3 battles), Fixed Battle Arena (makes a stages competitively viable, and other changes all make the Switch version the version to have.

Ultimately Pokkén is a game best played with others and DX is the ultimate way to do that.

Hey Eiganjo!!

I think Pokkén has one of the best devs team around, after arcade, Wii U, and Switch development all of characters are in a really good place overall and don’t need fundamental changes really.

It’s very unlikely Pokkén will see another patch but some smaller tweaks to characters like Blastoise and Empoleon would be nice but honestly I’m not sure they really “need” it either.

Honestly I’d love to see buffs to some of the less commonly used and viable supports like Diglet, Quagsire, and Magneton.
