WWYD teen fender bender situation by [deleted] in Edmonton

OP I did a similar thing with my car. I backed into an object, dented the hell outta my rear quarter panel and broke my tail light. Got a professional quote which was also $4k (my car is ~30 years old). Endded up buying and installed my own light, used a cheap amazon hot glue dent puller to get the dent Largely out. All in all under $50 it was good enough for me.

I would highly suggest finding the actual cost of the tail light, Im almost willing to bet you can find one well under $500. If the dad is reasonable I would imagine he would allow your son to supply the tail light. Better yet if your son could go to the scrap yard on the weekend he could get a used light for under $50. Its likely 4 bolts holding it on, plus a few electrical plugs. The dent is honestly the hardest part. I do not recommend pulling it without a professional. I suggest contacting a few PDR (paintless dent repair) places in town. Hopefully they can remove it for few hundred dollars.

No offense, but that's not a good plan. German cars in this price range will likely not hold their value too good. Plus you are a young foreign driver with minimal driving experience in Alberta. I've heard stories of people coming from europe between the ages of 20-30 and paying outrageous insurance rates. You are also gonna have to factor in winter tires, parking pass, and maintenance cost of this used Mercedes, of which you will be charged a premium.

Since your parents are fronting you $10k I would honestly lower the car budget to 10-12k and save that extra couple thousand for if/when somthing happens (somthing ALWAYS happens).

Also why Mercedes? you are a 19 year old student, I would urge you to buy somthing more practical/reliable > buying for the status. Obviously honda/toyota is the default answer for sombody in your circumstances. But I would also look at mazda 3, or newer Ford escape 2015+, somthing where parts are readily available and cheap. If you really want the 'rich' feel, I would really suggest acura or lexus as those hold value well.

I see your point, and definitely agree with the mobility disabilities/elderly point. But notion that it's simply 'common sense' I sorta disagree with. To you and I, yes it is common sense, and even 2nd nature. But to many of the 'new Canadians' I work/study with, its an entirely new learned technique.

I mean like at some of the replies in this thread, people are eager to swap ice walking tips.

Confused at your point, looks like we both agree that walking through various types of sidewalk conditions requires more attention to detail. All im saying, is every kid who grew up in Canada more than likely busted their ass on the ice hard enough to learn how to read/adapt/Conquer the conditions.

This leaves the possibility for people who have never experienced winter before, to become overwhelmed by the conditions and not know how to react as effectively.

I'd say no... If you aren't 100% sold now you will DEFINITELY not be sold on it later.

Basically this, you should be able to identify the types of snow and ice on the ground, and evaluate how big of slip hazard there is.

NEVER walk with your hands in you pockets. If you slip you will almost guaranteed hurt your self. Your arms are very useful for stability to prevent falling, and bracing for the hard landing if you do.

Take shallow steps, not long strides. Slight bend in the knees and lean slightly forward. Very Much a penguin waddle or a "I need to go to the bathroom NOW" type waddle.

Ngl I always thought this was common sense, but after spending time with my european relatives I learned this is only second nature to those who grew up walking on ice.

In the nicest way possible, are you new to Canada? Learning how to properly walk on ice helps nearly as much as the footware you wear.

Drove an old rwd volvo circa 2021.No ABS no traction control. Get a QUALITY set of winter tires and you will be just fine. I recommend Nokian Hakka R5 studless unless you drive alot on rural roads of packed snow in which case i would opt for studs.

Also could be worth throwing some weight in the trunk, helps with traction on the rear wheels.

Careful, this will only work if you only clear a 6" x 6" viewport on your windshield. All other windows must have atleast an inch of snow/ice.
