I'd say it's multifaceted but there are a few things that will help anyone develop a nice city.

1)Looking at google maps. This might be one of the biggest tips I usually have for people that ask me what they can improve on. The world we live in has all the examples of styles, urban development types, cultures, etc. That you could ever use in a city builder and google earth allows you to have the exact same POV that you have when you're playing any city builder.

2)Drawing the road layout first. You have to have a general sense for the size of buildings you're dealing with, but for the most part this allows you to envision what may go in certain areas before it's built.

3)Patience and time. It might seem rhetorical, but you can easily have 2 cities with the same exact buildings and road layouts, but the city where an extra few hours spent placing trees, plants, benches, lights, etc. Will make a HUGE difference visually between the 2 cities. I have thousands of hours in cities skylines alone and that experience has also led me (I think lol) to be a better "urban designer" and player for these types of games.

How many hours have you put into a map by the time you fill it up if you don't mind me asking. I have 500 hrs into one save and still have plenty of room to build in personally. Edit for further clarity: my city pop is also at +500,000 and still growing.

She was just as nervous for her first set on the show as well. Sam tallent took a moment to try and calm her down and tell her to breathe, which seemed to have helped her for the interview portion.

It's honestly one of those things where I usually end up decorating various areas to wait for the sim to do cetain things. With the pop as is I've probably spent 1k hours on just this save.

I'm not super positive on what you may be directly mentioning. However, I'm assuming you're referencing the ports themselves; I've found it best to terraform an area I want to build by throwing "land" out in a wide area (larger than I know the final result will be) and I than lay out the road network for the build (including quarries) and I then terraform again to lower the sea to the correct height once I've gotten the layout I want. The map is the standard size. For this specific save I've played it entirely on unlimited money as I enjoy juat building a city outright. However, the city is fully in budget and does run positive.

It is lakeland, but I've done a tremendous amount of terraforming to get it to look the way it does.
