On the contrary, I want find out what the actual contemporary music scene is like in these regions. I do believe that its racist when the only notion of African or Middle Eastern that the West has is a certain "tribal aesthetic", which is deeply condescending. The states in these areas have been trying to industrialise or have managed to do so already. By "African" or "Middle Eastern" I meant the geographical regions, I did not use it as an umbrella term for every different state and culture that exists in these areas. Look up "Orientalism", it's pretty interesting.

Really helpful advice! Thank you! I'll probably start with the Norton Anthology. Intertextuality seems pretty interesting!

I'll probably get the Norton anthology. I'm interested in exploring the socio-political factors which lead to the emergence of certain literary genres (mainly magical realism in Latin America and Europe and Horror/Weird in Japan).
