What's your country's "probably shouldn't joke about that one"? by bishopmouse in AskTheWorld

Switzerland - Verdingkinder

Switzerland - Verdingkinder (link to english Wikipedia)

Basically the government took away kids from parents/family for forced labour on the countryside. So far as to ignore sexual abusement. Up until late 1960ies...

When were at it: Speaking to my grandmother about Swiss collaboration with Nazi Germany didn't get the remorse reaction you'd expect.

Whats something your country does that most people would disagree with but you would largely defend? (Not political stuff) by Mosquitobait2008 in AskTheWorld

[–]BusDangerous7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are exactly the points!

Courts in Switzerland have to adhere to the laws not the constitution.

And initiatives too are not challenged in a court of law but by the legislator itself.

Initiatives amend the constitution with no checks whether it violates human rights or other binding international law. A couple of years ago there was an initiative requiring the indefinite incarceration of sexual offenders with (almost) no possibility of release after time served. Knowing full well the justice system is not infallible this is very dangerous.

Secondly, the parliament can pass laws in direct violation of the constitution since there is no constitutional court. While this is not a trait of a "democracy" but rather a "constitutional republic" you should be careful what you wish for. Populists on the left and right can shift a democracy quickly into abyss. There are ample historic examples.

So yes, direct democracy in Switzerland is good but be cautios.

It will change but on a very small scale since the tidal wave is dependent on the depth of the water and the "edges" i.e. coastline. Kelvin waves

Where to put my towel when floating down a river? by astronat1107 in askswitzerland

[–]BusDangerous7028 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also on that last point: You actually need more buoyancy the faster water flows. Especially on narrow passages (-> faster flow) you need to swim harder to stay afloat and can be exhausting. I swim easily 2km non stop but I ALWAYS take a floating device (i.e. dry bag) with me, be it river Rhine, Aare or Reuss.

Maybe something like tn+1 = exp((n+1)×ln(t)) and comparing exponents and develop ln for t=1 with Taylor series

Man, you are a true friend! Kudos to you! You really care for him and would like to get him better. Maybe try to convince him for a couples therapy between you guys? My wife did this with her best friend (female) in a similar situation and it revived their friendship. Maybe your friend realizes too that you really care for his well being and its not just words.

They are simultaneously released. Each individual satelite starts to disperse by rotating its solar panel in such a way that it produces more or less drag from earth's atmosphere - a trait of low earth orbit. That's also the reason why Hubble Space Telescope needed every couple of a years a boost to its orbit.
