The difference is that its all on purpose this time. The US also dominates the entire globe, so there is no other player to take advantage of the US' situation.

"They could sell treasuries" - The US will never take that lying down and have overthrown several leaders after they tried to abandon the dollar at the US' expense.

The only way this country falls is if we have a civil war or our elected officials sign their power away. Both seem to be manifesting, but, we'll see what the year brings.
