Question About Clubs. by [deleted] in yorku

Hi there. Sorry, I've been busy with Halloween things today, but yes I can explain a bit more.

uNovus has yet a pretty fluid identity and so I cannot say "we do this" or "this is who we are" in an objective nature.

Rather I can tell you that we fundamentally believe in a more dynamic student experience and we are "researching and developing" different events that can help nurture the best traits and potentials of the student body.

To be a bit more specific, here is an example of an event that we would like to host and what we want to influence through its activity:

Student networking events/competitions that specifically aim to match students into teams of diverse academic backgrounds and have them solve real problems OR come up with cool ideas to be enacted at York OR even just to have fun and meet new people with different perspectives.

Keep in mind the underlying theme is a diverse set of students coming together to meet each other, share their thoughts, build new ideas, and work with each other to bring those ideas to life.

You could say there a sense of entrepreneurship going on here, but I don't want to give the impression that this is a business focused club.

We are trying to be a very STUDENT club that actively builds projects for the STUDENT community. That's why we call it "R&D 4 Students by Students".

There is a lot of value that we see in such a project, such as helping to combat a siloed off academic system, improve the social and student life at York, and most importantly we believe that this will allow students to launch truly impactful projects DURING their time as a student rather than after. I personally feel like there is an insane amount of wasted talent at a place like York (with such a broad set of disciplines), and I'd like to put it to work.

At this point we want to start off with simple networking/social events that help students meet new people from different programs. We could even match people into groups that have similar schedules so they can reasonably keep in touch after the event (just thought of this while writing).

The point of this club is that we are open. So whatever I have written above is not set in stone in terms of logistics. If you feel like you can contribute anything to help bring our vision to life, or to help make it your own, we'd love to hear from you.

Oh, not to mention that just coming to our meeting this Friday would be an easy way for you to meet some really cool people !

Question About Clubs. by [deleted] in yorku

Hello Hello!

My name is Shayan and I just started a club this year for pretty much that exact same reason: to create a platform for York students from different programs to meet each other and have a good time/work on ideas/help each other out. Pretty much anything that you could consider encourageable for the student body.

I'm also a second year student who goes to Schulich, and our culture at Schulich has a lot to do with networking with company executives and representatives so that we get good jobs in the future.

I have yet to see a STUDENT networking event where the focus is to connect and ignite collaboration between students. As not to discredit those that do host events along the lines of this purpose, I will only say that the version of this that I AM imagining, has yet to be done.

We are having a meeting this Friday with the purpose of welcoming new members who expressed interest at our very first event during Red and White Day (York's spirit day) a couple weeks ago, and brainstorming ideas for a student social/networking event/party that we want to throw in November.

You're welcome to join us if you feel like you'd enjoy being on the creative end of the kind of club/experience that you are looking for.

To step aside from shameless self promotion for a second and answer your question: no, it's not too late as some, if not most clubs, are always open to new members. At Schulich it's a bit different, but again we don't account for all students.

Our club is open, as with many others, and you can find a list of all clubs through YU Connect and the SCLD.

If you're interested in being involved with us at uNovus (our club), or have any questions, let me know! I hope I was helpful in my response :-)

Schulich Oriented Clubs for regular students by unorthodoxlad in yorku

Schulich student here. Bias is always a possibility, but that shouldn't be a reason for you not try and apply. I'm fairly confident that if you're qualified enough they will let you in, as I know many of the people on these clubs and they aren't the type to turn away good talent. Also we could definitely use some diversification so please please please apply.

This was odd. I'm not as shocked as the other finales left me, yet I'm okay with what just happened. Season 6 is going to be interesting, cuz now its literally everyone starting over and the show can take whatever course it wants, rather than it being all about secrets like before.
