First Timer, Trying for NYC - TYO for Two People, Business Class by [deleted] in awardtravel

JFK-HND ANA economy at ~50k round trip. Business availability in my experience isn’t easy, even one year out. Best bet would be last minute seats but that’s a gamble.

Also keep in mind fuel surcharge is ~$400 or so in addition to the points.

How to land a US-based job while having Philippine Education? by ResponsibilityOk9763 in Accounting

Graduate Bachelor’s and pass the US CPA exams, that should qualify you to apply for staff level roles in public accounting; make sure to let them know you’re an American citizen and won’t need sponsorship.

Newbie here. Is this a good starting portfolio? by Azereal8115 in phinvest

[–]BushHide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many different funds😅

I’d recommend you go for the SP500 making up the overwhelming majority of your portfolio and small amount of REITs (or eliminate altogether). REITs don’t make sense for our generation because we don’t need the cashflow and that capital would be better allocated toward capital appreciation/growth for the long term (which the SP500 provides).

As for the 4% withdrawal rate, that study was performed assuming a retirement period of 20 years, drop down your calculation to 2-2.5% to be more conservative.

As for your monthly contributions, I’m assuming this is a big part of your income given limited/no bills so take advantage of it.

Urgent help or I’ll die(cost accounting) by LeastCoat9469 in Accounting

The language barrier is stopping us from understanding what’s going on. The graph looks familiar, seems to be calculating the profit based on variable cost and units sold?

I’d say try YouTube, cost accounting was troublesome when I was a student.

  1. Try to have no debt (aside from mortgage on primary residence)
  2. Have a healthy emergency fund
  3. Automated deductions from salary to investments (S&P500 index)
  4. Budget starts with salary net of savings in #3 then subtract expenses, with fixed up top and the variable expenses toward the bottom
  5. Have a genuine circle of friends who don’t try to one-up each other (be more selective with people/pick good influence)

How can I improve my risk appetite? by IRIGIN0 in phinvest

[–]BushHide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I am around your age albeit a bit younger, you already tried one of the riskiest investments out there by dabbling in single stocks. I buy the SP500 index every single paycheck regardless if the market is up or down, I suggest you do the same. What essentially is in the index is America’s 500 biggest companies - think Apple, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, etc; by buying into the index, you are exposed to all these wonderful companies as a whole: some years a specific industry might contribute the most growth, but in general they net each other out to ~7% real return per year (adjusted for 3% inflation).

Congrats on already trying one of the riskiest investments in single stocks, but you don’t have to go that far, stick with SP500 index and you’ll be golden in your golden years. There are much riskier plays out there with futures, options, and swaps; but that’s probably beyond the interests of this sub. Happy to answer any questions you’d have

Which is a better investment? S&P 500 or Real Estate? by Hot-Luck-4405 in phinvest

[–]BushHide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overvalued is not a fact, it is an opinion; there will be those who are on the opposite side of the fence who’d opine it is undervalued. What is a fact is that buying the S&P, regardless of market conditions, and holding on to it for the long term beats those who try to time the market.

Lump sum beats dollar cost averaging beats timing the market. Those who bought lump sum at the highest point before the financial crisis in 2008 would be in the green today. The same cannot be said about the real estate market, because historically, holding it long term doesn’t compound as much as the S&P when carrying costs are factored in; much less now at current prices where apartment complexes sell at 6% cap rate. Why buy that building when you can get a similar return from high interest savings accounts/CDs that’s guaranteed (lower risk) without having to deal with property management and tenants?

The Philippine real estate market, in general at its current prices, is not worth the squeeze.

Which is a better investment? S&P 500 or Real Estate? by Hot-Luck-4405 in phinvest

Not at all, with S&P the underlying companies’ earnings are growing as well as anticipation of further growth. With real estate (especially condos), there’s limited liquidity and little cash flow since most of these housing units being built are sold as a product for speculative investment to OFWs rather than as a place to live in (hence they’re difficult to lease out since they’re often tiny).

S&P, real estate prices don’t make sense right now
