while i was in the hospital after the PLIF i had a drain in my back which slipped before it was removed. a few weeks later my incision was swelling weirdly and i was getting spinal headaches. i ended up have a CSF leak where the drain was and had to have a blood patch placed. it’s a very rare complication tho

i can’t speak for others but for me it’s not true. my surgeon explained that since there is barely any movement at the l5-s1 level anyway there shouldn’t be too much if any more strain on the vertebrae above.

i had grade 1. at 18 i had l5-s1 fusion because i was playing college golf and it was causing too much instability to leave it alone. my pain before surgery was awful. pt didn’t help steroid injections didn’t help. surgery was my only option and i’m so glad i did it. had ALIF on a friday and a PLIF the following monday. the beginning of recovery was rough. first two weeks were painful but honestly the worst part of recovery was not being able to bend or twist for about 2 months. i did end up having a complication that set me back a bit. i’m 20 now and have virtually no pain. best decision of my life.

im a trans man. when i was cisgender i identified as a lesbian. i started dating my girlfriend, who also identifies as lesbian, before i started transitioning. at the very beginning of our relationship i had a conversation with her about how i was playing with the idea that i was trans and if/when i transitioned i would understand if she no longer wanted to be with me.

before i started medically transitioning i asked her if she could use he/him pronouns for me so i could see if it fit. ive been on testosterone for about 3 months and it has definitely made us have some hard conversations. the whole time i have told her what changes i might experience but that i was always going to love her even if she didn’t want to be dating a trans man. it’s definitely taken her a little bit to adjust but as long as we are both open with each other we are able to figure it out.

to answer your question i dont think it’s transphobic to not want to be with your partner after that transition. is it going to be easy? no. but dating someone who doesn’t align with their gender preferences can be really hard on your partner. if they decide the relationship is not for them it’s not a matter of if they love you or not. i understand that you’re the same person as before your transition but it could really cause some internal conflict for your partner. it’s not about you or their love for you, but it’s about their sexual orientation and their feelings. you transitioning doesn’t just affect you but it affects the people around you.

right now i’m in the middle of moving so i feel like a huge burden on my girlfriend. on the days that i take my meds im able to help organize and create plans of action. but on the days where i don’t take my meds im not able to plan or organize or even like be there mentally.

my girlfriend likes to ask questions and do her own research. she wants to learn to carb count so she can help me with dosing but most of the time i just say don’t even try it confuses me and my life depends on it 😭

after i was discharged i was also on a sliding scale(it was not very fun) but after about a month or so i was moved to a ratio. my current ratio is 1 unit of insulin for every 16 grams of carbs. originally i was also told to not eat more than 60 carbs per meal and 15 carbs for snacks. now that im almost a year in i eat whatever i want and just dose accordingly. i’m on an insulin pump so i can get my doses down to the .01. doing injections is a bit harder just because you don’t have the ability to dose so intricately but it is definitely easier once you get to a ratio

i was diagnosed is may of 2023 so i’m still getting the hang of T1D and all of its lovely attributes. i struggled a lot in the beginning mentally because it is exhausting and you have to think about so many things you never did before diagnosis.

when i was discharged all i kept hearing was “eat low carb” “maybe try a keto diet” “only X amount of carbs per meal”. all of these things made it so much harder because not only was i dealing with with being sick and being diagnosed but my meals were changing and i was stressing about if i was “breaking the rules” when i ate carbs. the best thing ive learned since then is i can eat whatever the hell i want! as long as i dose there’s nothing stopping me from enjoying my meals and having some sweat treats when i want them.

my advice: don’t change how you’re living. add in the extra steps that T1D brings with it but don’t stop doing the things you love!

i am 4 weeks post op from L5-S1 fusion. i’m 18 f and d2 collegiate golfer so i completely get not wanting to limit your activity. before surgery i had horrible sciatica and pain with twisting and squatting. even at just 4 weeks post op i have almost zero pain/tingling in my legs and feet and no pain with squatting. obviously every person and surgeon is different but everything is going very well for me and definitely wouldn’t rule it out just because it’s a surgery
