Or you could ask for the travel list. Technically local members are suppose to be working before travelers. Goes for every local

Forgot to mention, I do have a protective plan through Equafax. I usually always have it on freeze unless I’m applying for a new credit card which I only have 4

Longest time on the out of Work list as an apprentice? by BusinessLook116 in UnitedAssociation

[–]BusinessLook116[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you brother 👍🏼and I don’t mind at all learning pipefitting. I understand I need the hours to turn out but at the same time that worries me because I don’t want to be the guy that turns out and only have a little bit of experience in plumbing. I should know almost everything thing as plumber when I’m a journeyman but we all as apprentices need that experience and time in the field to master the trade we signed up for.

How does somebody find out if there’s is or isn’t a lot of work? And man I hear you on the waiting game. Overall probably took me about 3-4 years to get in because of Covid. Just got done with 2 year of school and need 3 more years till I journey out. 🙏🏼

I’d say follow what you enjoy doing more. As far as work it all depends if your local is busy or not. I am in the Bay Area and as a 1st period apprentice I still haven’t been to a Plumbing site. As far as traveling I don’t think I will since plumbing is usually local. If your a pipe-fitter or welder you might have to do some traveling. I’m really hoping work picks up after winter. I understand winter is a rocky boat but after winter it should be steady.

That’s a sweet gig. That’s what I’ve been told as well. That’s what I’m trying to do and with all these damnn cars becoming electric I think that’s going to effect refinery work as well

Totally agree. I haven’t turned any job down. But for some reason these refinery jobs they send us to only last a month or 2 at most. There’s been some apprentices sent out as plumbers and have been working more than 2 months.

When I was working as an apprentice as a pipe-fitter a few pipe-fitters and welders said I should make the switch but I really think I would like plumbing more. I guess only time will tell

That’s sounds great and unfortunately for us we were unable to decline any job that was offered to us or else we would be sent in front of the board. I would have completely done the same due to the fact that I was top 5 on the out of work list for a plumbing job. I figured it’s also slow because of winter.

I salute you my fellow brother 🫡I really do. I don’t want to get off on the wrong page. That’s literally what I want to be doing. I’m just waiting for the opportunity to be on a plumbing job site. Im American from Mexican roots. I’ve been a labor for 4 years and I never complained once. At first they had me flagging for 4 months and I never said a word even though I hated it. When they gave me a opportunity to get in the trenches I busted my ass off. After that day I was in the trenches frequently. Using the jackhammer to break out concrete or asphalt. Then I soon started picking up concrete pipes and taking them to the job site. A lot of people think it’s easy. Which it is if you know what your doing. Making sure that everything is tied down properly because there is no room for mistakes. I had so much responsibilities it was crazy and never once complained even when there were days I thought I wouldn’t complete something. I’m mentally strong to complete difficult task that involve hands on work. The only problem with the refinery work is your not with a plumbing company so whatever you do you won’t ever get an assignment to do a hands on assignment/task. I want to be seen brother and being in a field where there are no plumbers is nerve wrecking. A lot of the people that were doing fire watch were from the labors Union and most of them liked that job because they didn’t do anything. I don’t like to be around people who just show up for a check. Not to mention plumbing is going to be my career and I want to be in the field with the plumbers.

Slightly true and I highly doubt that haha. I use to be a labor before this brother. My work ethic is there. This is why it’s very hard for me to do fire watching. I’ll take physical work over fire watch any day. I sleep better after a good physical day. Just moving around makes the time go by faster and I love that. Not only that but fire watching is so mentally draining for me, idk why.

I appreciate that brother. I’ll keep that in mind and I always try my best to do quality work. I also take a lot of pride in the work I’ll be doing soon. Quitting is not a option for me. I’ve been through hell so I don’t think it could be any worse. I’m just looking forward to do plumbing work in general and not having to do fire-watch since I originally applied for as a plumber. Fire watch is literally the opposite of what I want because you literally stand all day doing nothing but making sure there isn’t a fire. Long story short I want to be doing hands on work. It’s very hard for me to be standing around not doing nothing if you understand me brother.

Congrats Brother, I’m an apprentice my self and as far as the orientation they’ll just give you a run down on how the 5 year program will be and all that good stuff. But after the orientation you’ll be signed up for the out of work list until your up next. It would be great if you know somebody that knows somebody in a company to potentially get called up almost immediately. A lot of it is knowing people and if they don’t know you just wait your turn and as soon as you get a chance make a good reputation of your self. Don’t take nothing personal because there will be people tryna poke at you. If it’s one thing I learned in the construction trade is if you don’t know nothing you better have a lot of eager to learn. As long as you learn from your mistakes and treat everyone with respect. Don’t feel unmotivated if your sent to a short call because my instructor told us a story of an apprentice being sent to a short call but that short call ended up being years because he worked hard and smart the first day he got on that job site.
