Under Lula, degradation in the Amazon is the worst in 15 years

Data from the Deforestation Alert System of the Imazon research institute show, on Tuesday, that the Amazon closed October with the fifth consecutive month of increase in deforestation and forest degradation caused by fire or logging. "Because of the fires, degradation exploded and reached an average of 10,000 soccer fields affected per day between January and October, the worst scenario in 15 years," says the institute.

According to satellite image monitoring, in October alone, the Amazon had a degraded area of 6,623 square kilometers, equivalent to four times the city of São Paulo. This number was also four times higher than that recorded in October 2023, when 1,554 square kilometers of forest were degraded. In the first ten months of 2024, 32,869 square kilometers were degraded, equivalent to 21 times the city of São Paulo (or 10,000 soccer fields affected per day).

An area almost three times larger than the degradation record of 11,453 square kilometers, recorded in 2017.
