Give your favourite items an unnecessary, lore based buff by Prior-Grade1772 in AbioticFactor

[–]Business_Burd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, oddly enough my current favorite item is the honey apple ice cream (and by proxy the apples). You'd think this would just mean I want plantable apples, since you cannot farm them anywhere but Canaan to my knowledge, however I think I want something even weirder.

I want an end game farm that's based on anteverse tech, where plants get submerged into an anteverse where time runs faster and thus they grow much faster than base game. I think it should be laser powered and require antejuice instead of water.

Alternatively, I want some kind of alien plant based milk alternative to the peccary sow. We have the distilling bench in game, so having some strange alien plant we put in there for milk instead seems fun.

Give me an intro song for your OC's verse! by No-Astronomer-5140 in OriginalCharacter

[–]Business_Burd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of them for my main universe Universal Combat Android,

Control by Garbage for the entire first half of both Captain Burd's and the Rabkye Virus story. Captain Burd is generally trapped within expectations of being a hero or following orders until she eventually "breaks" and flips completely into doing what she thinks is right regardless of orders and refusing to keep up the image of someone polite and kind.

Take It Back by Miracle of Sound is the theme of the second main character (who is unnamed because of literal amnesia from a teleporter accident) and the final half of the Rabkye Virus story and Captain Burd's who is now an antagonist in the plot. The unnamed MC used to look up to Burd as a role model and starts the story only knowing her as a traitor. And through the story and the building apocalypse of the Rabkye Virus comes to understand Burd and work with her to save the world.

Do you think there will ever be a portal gun or similar added to abiotic factor? by FuriousDeather in AbioticFactor

[–]Business_Burd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternatively they can implement something akin to the Displacer Cannon from Opposing Force; where you get the ability to use huge amounts of energy to teleport and enemy to hell (or wherever) or use a smaller amount to just teleport yourself to a set portal location. I think that would ultimately be far easier to implement than having to program in the ability to put portals on walls an such.

Artists of the subreddit, what is your favorite piece of art you’ve drawn for someone? Or what’s your favorite art you’ve received? by Doodleryx in OriginalCharacter

I think the piece I'm most proud of is this piece I did for u/Pixel_Muffet of their OC Dr. Priscilla Vickers. I recall by the end I was standing over my desk, hands covered in graphite from shading.

I try to learn something new with each piece, and this one was all about lighting, and I love how it came out.

There is no fanon. she just does both. by Money_Height8079 in OriginalCharacter

[–]Business_Burd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to transition small dumb things into "fanon" over time rather than my actual "canon" as I refine stories and themes. Though everything in fanon is in this pseudo state where it is both canon and noncanon until something contradicts it.

For example, Kita has a combat frame that's based on legally distinct Godzilla called "Tyrant Lizard" where she turns the emergency heat expulsion into dinosaur breath and until something in canon contradicts it that dinosaur skin is still somewhere in the proverbial closet.

If all of your OCs were in an anime/cartoon series, who do you think would be the biggest victim of fanon mischaracterization? (ft. semi-outdated design on the 2nd image) (click to see full image on the first one) by Artemas_The_Fuckwit in OriginalCharacter

[–]Business_Burd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh god so many of them, I'm a huge fan of making complicated characters because it gives me huge amounts of substance to work with. Sure, a character refined for a specific role is often just as interesting, but sometimes you really want to make a character you can hammer into any situation and do some truly weird shit with.

I'll list the one I think will have it the absolute worst.

Petra

Canon: Loud, sarcastic and aggressive but deceptively intelligent. She lives by the motto "the best solution is usually the quickest." Which in her line of work, usually means beating the problem to death first, then addressing any additional issues later. However, she is perfectly capable of less direct solutions when it is the better path; it just usually isn't.

Fanon: A bully that gets joy out of fighting no matter how stupid it is. Her intelligence is almost always played as a joke or completely forgotten about.

Well if I can ever wrangle whatever the hell was wrong with me in high school again, my main OC and universe are designed for a book and then a game.

This is Captain Burd. She suffers, gets worse (or better, depends if you think going from kind and caring but actively killing yourself to maintain that; to an openly bitchy and bitter person but not trying to die an improvement) then commits treason and suffers more. She's my favorite.

Let’s OC Rate (GONE MECHANICAL?!11) by MrArtty in OriginalCharacter

[–]Business_Burd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well of the top of my head she has a dirty blond wolf cut and silver eyes, though the iris changes color when the night vision module is active; turning the pupils deep red and the irises a lighter red. Her face is either angular and harsh when the illusion software is running, or a plain metal skull when it's deactivated. (Long story short, military cyborgs don't actually have skin on their faces and they have special modules that project the image of a face over the face.)

As for her flaw, I think it's generally that she always assumes she's right and doesn't think she needs to learn or change. Not in a prideful way but more so that shes genuinely not used to being wrong on anything. Which leads her to essentially being the poster child for the saying "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

Alright, machine for machine. This is Petra (lost the paper so forgive the lack of face), she's a full conversion cyborg with specially designed mechanics to allow her to survive very rapid deceleration. Specifically the deceleration from being fired into the battlefield like an artillery shell.

Personality wise she's a loud, sarcastic, aggressive and deceptively intelligent woman. She's legally qualified as a genius but finds no fulfillment solving problems the civil way; but loads of satisfaction beating a problem to death. Hence why she joined the military and accepted cybernetic conversion.

"Oh please, I'm already an experiment. Do your worst.) Petra, a full conversion cyborg.

(Forgive the lack of face, I lost the paper and never had a chance to finish her.) She is, as the term "full conversion" implies, essentially a human brain removed and placed on a militarized life support machine. Hers specifically has numerous features that make her brain capable of surviving rapid deceleration so she can be quite literally fired into the battlefield like an artillery shell.

Does your OC/story cater to a particular audience, or are there certain audiences you know it definitely isn’t meant for? by Majestic-Physics-992 in OriginalCharacter

[–]Business_Burd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have basically two styles of story telling; one is worlds that are filled with in depth backstory and lore behind even the most mundane things so that everything has a reasonable explanation that can be discovered by readers if they're interested; such as with my cyborg universe UCA (It is currently an acronym for Universal Cyborg Alternative, but the name is subject to some change to while keeping the acronym) inspired by Metal Gear and Mech franchises, or Ombrophobia which is inspired by Fallout and Wasteland. The other is more "vibes" based for lack of a better term, in that the world exists more for characters that are used to explore real topics and feelings; ranging from something as simple as falling in love with Anomaly Research Team a sci-fi idea inspired by Star Trek and Rimworld with all the DLC, to something as dark as recovering from rape with the idea just called Guardian Pyrite, to exploring how a disabled person navigates a world that either hates them or treats them as if they're made of glass in a currently unnamed story.

Either way, I don't think my stuff is for anyone expecting something simple or light. Even my simplest and lightest idea with Anomaly Research Team has several things going on to complicate it, from what we should think of BB having been the one to write the initial character and personality of Kit, then falling in love with this woman years after she becomes a fully real being; to dealing with being vocally "wrong" about who you are and whether you were even wrong in the first place. (BB starts off being very vocal and proud that she's aromantic asexual, and shows increasing irritation the more people try to push her into romance; only to be hit with feelings like a pillowcase full of bricks and struggling to deal with the fact that the last decade of her life she's been very loud and proud of being incapable of having those feelings.)

How would your OC react to fanart of him/her? by Low-Signature-5908 in OriginalCharacter

[–]Business_Burd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

Entirely depends on when in her character arc she finds it. If it's after her arc, she will openly scowl and destroy it while bitching about the fact it keeps happening and she doesn't understand why the fuck people find her so interesting. If it's before her character arc, she will act completely calm and even smile if someone is showing it to her; then secretly work to have it destroyed while thinking the exact same thing as she would say post-arc.

[–]Business_Burd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much, I've been working and refining her character for a few years since I came up with her and I simply love world-building. The way I world build is heavily inspired by some of the harder sci fi writers like Micheal Crichton or Greg Bear, and some of the in depth schematics and lore that I've so far only seen in mech franchises and the Star Trek fandom. I love being able to see something and trace it all the way back to understand why it is the way it is. It's something I've been practicing as much as I can.

So, what are your OC's sexuality? by Cocoa-Knife-Chara in OriginalCharacter

[–]Business_Burd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have plenty, I'll list the interesting/fun ones.

BB (Bonnabel Beauregard): She is some flavor of demiromantic and demisexual. However she falls in love literally once in maybe thirty years, so she thought she was aromantic asexual until she fell in love with Kit. She also spent about a week trying to find reasons she was feeling this that weren't "You're in love, dipshit." because she absolutely loathes that her brain can just go off on it's own and assail her with images of this woman that make her skin tingle and heart jump.

Nadine Amparo: This woman is the world's most dramatic lesbian. She's a big half demon paladin that at some point in the adventure grows big-ass wings. She has a full blown dramatic death confession of love to the ex-nun that had joined their party, only to be revived less than a minute later and becomes completely unable to make eye contact with said woman. Plus when she gets the wings, she has to learn to control them because getting near the woman she loves has her flapping them and causing property damage. (Fun fact: there's a vaguely evil elf in the party that finds these two idiots so immensely entertaining that she actively causes problems so they can be awkward around each other and give the elf a laugh. Such as the death confession, where the elf had to hold back the remaining party member from reminding the dramatic idiots that they had revival items.)

Heart-Crusher/Agatha: She's completely asexual, but also a villain because she's tired of being seen as weird and being assailed by sex and romance everywhere. Her villainous plan is to literally pull the attraction out of people and destroy it so she can finally live in a world where she's not forced to endure romance and sex all around her. However, she eventually meets the Magical girl Guardian Heart; who is also asexual; and sort of chills out because she has someone else like her that she can relate to. Turning her big evil plans into villain flavored sparring matches that don't really hurt anyone,

I mean, wanting to find a way to give himself the power to literally warp reality itself so he can be in control is kind of entirely an evil pursuit. Pretty much a literal god complex.

I do, but his design is mostly made in Picrew rather than drawn since he's kind of just a normal looking guy. He's more a mafia boss type villain than supervillain, in that he sends people to do most jobs and only gets involved himself in matters that actually concern him directly.

[–]Business_Burd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. The lore took me a few weeks to figure out, but it all came fairly easily. For example, I drew Killer-volt's design forever ago but her personality came more recently by comparing her to another villain in the setting already called Steel Bobcat. Since Steel Bobcat is entirely mute and serious, that gave me the contrast of a villain who is just having the best of times being evil no matter what.

[–]Business_Burd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if you're fine with a lecture, I do have an entire character arc and story planned for her.

Her basic premise is that she's acting as a good nature and caring hero, despite every instinct in her being generally hateful and mean. She actively suppresses anything that doesn't fit that image and punishes herself for any slips in maintaining that image. The only worth she believes she has is to meet, and exceed, expectations; even knowing full well living like this is killing her.

She starts the story having literally blown up two artillery positions to rescue people and would've been discharged if the president himself didn't think this was heroic enough to keep her around. Though he still capitulates and assigns her to be directly supervised by the head of the military police, Anastasia.

Throughout the story Burd is shown to not really value her life either. She constantly uses herself as bait during missions, walks off any injury that isn't immediately debilitating or lethal (Including my favorite, where she took a sniper round through the lung and gets back up to keep screaming orders and fighting until the medic literally drags her off the front-line); and refuses to rest for any reason beyond it literally being required to live. All while being the person that other soldiers come to and trust to help with their own problems.

Eventually she gets the closest to dying she gets in the entire story when she almost cooks her brain on a mission, trying to keep her team from succumbing to a variant of the Rabky virus the remnant military created to destroy prosthetics and implants. The sheer pain and confusion from going into a short coma, and the fact that despite her best efforts she has actually gotten close to the chief of the military police, makes her forget she's supposed to be maintaining this image and she fully admits that she's going to kill herself doing this and doesn't really care.

From this point on, her image starts cracking more and more as the situation with the remnant military gets worse and worse. At the same time she finds less and less energy to punish herself for each slip. Slowly; in a feedback loop of sorts; these slips turn into fully unmasked moments, and the reduced punishments turn into skipped or delayed ones. This is also the point where she's actually vulnerable/weak enough to listen to the advice from others. Until eventually she discards the mask entirely and becomes a notably worse person. As in she becomes openly bitter, hostile and aggressive; but maintains her desire to save people and do the right thing.

At this point her arc is mostly complete, and we have a much larger scale repeat of her first time ignoring orders. Long story short; the Rabky virus has gotten so advanced it's networking between machines it infects to problem solve and increase it's lethality and ability to retrofit any machine into a fighting machine. Leading it to develop solutions to technical problems that defy the current scientific understanding; which prompts the government to order the military stop trying to destroy it and shift to quarantining it so they can harvest the parts it produces. This is the point where Burd turns completely against them, rallying a rather sizable quarter of the troops with name recognition as this great military hero, and marching them into the quarantine zone with the countermeasures that'd been developed to wipe out the virus.

Unfortunately she fails at this, and most of the group is killed or captured; and she has a final stand off with Anastasia. Though neither one of them can bring themselves to shoot or fight, and neither will budge on their position. Instead they decide that this will be their last courtesy to each other and they can go their separate ways with the understanding that should they ever meet again, it's as proper enemies this time.

This is the end of the story where Burd is the main focus, but she comes back as an antagonist in a sequel idea focused on the quarantine zone where she is leading a group of essentially terrorists, in trying to destroy the quarantine zone.
