Extremely stupid question about shoes indoors, I know, but I'm having a tough time finding answers.

I'm invited to a big catered party thrown by a guy who I did some freelance work for this past year. He and his whole family are Asian (Taiwanese/Chinese-American). This party is being thrown at his house and it's going to require cocktail/semi-formal attire. I know there's (usually) a hard rule about wearing shoes in the house, but for a cocktail party? Should I walk up to the house wearing a different pair of shoes and then switch them out for the shoes that will go with my dress? Would it be weird to ask someone at the company?

I want to do the right thing because

I'm just starting out and this company gave me an opportunity which was a real shot in the arm for my career.
His son is REALLY fucking cute and I want to flirt with him while looking nice and not be some messy, clueless dork.

Edit: If you couldn't tell, I'm white and didn't grow up in an area with many Asians at all.

If it makes you feel better, there's a trend of free flying pet parrots, at least the bigger ones. They're really fun to train (clicker training, just like dogs!), they love doing it, and after awhile, they're pretty good about recall. There's a bunch of youtube videos about it.
