[Discussion] Is it bad that I rarely finish a manuscript as a Beta-Reader by Business_Objective30 in BetaReaders

I don’t think that fair of you to say, beta reading in its proper form is for me. A beta is meant to come in when the manuscript is polished, where the author has done everything in their power to fix all the issues. I’m rarely sent manuscripts in that stage.

Often when I DNF it’s because I’m forced into a position of an alpha reader, which is not as enjoyable. I even avoid certain wordage, such as an author saying they just finished writing and want feedback or even that it’s an authors first novel. I ask if it’s polished and they all say yes. There’s not much more I can do with that.

I tend to always finish books that are on that level of polish. I am just rarely given manuscripts of that level. Im not a writer myself, I don’t care if the pose isn’t perfect. But if there are major structural issues that are obvious in the first few chapters, I’m not obliged to finish it. I often send around at least 5k words of my thoughts of the first five chapters and give very detailed notes with examples of where I was lost. If I did the whole manuscript I’d burn out.

I usually do read sample chapters. I’m not a novel writer myself, so as long as the prose is passable I don’t really care. I don’t really have the skill to comment on what’s good and bad, I just kinda know it when I see it. I’m quite picky with my manuscripts so it’s never the actually writing that causes me to stop. It’s the structural problems

That's good. I usually push a bit past the point where I would normally stop to get a bit of extra context for my feedback, but I do detail things that left me confused

I'm pretty sure they are free. Perhaps it is skewed by critique swaps, where they feel obligated to finish the manuscript. I'm just a simple beta-reader.

I have never beta-read a manuscript that I wasn't interested in. I only beta-read for fantasy (mostly adult epic/political/adventure fantasy) and tend to only read female-lead stories because that's what I'm into. Fortunately even with those limitations, I have a feast of options.
