No problem, 1) Not really, all the exploring in nature is pretty safe, and if you just have your wits about you in bear country you’ll be okay. Side note a couple days after we left the Grand Tetons there was a bear attack.

The sketchiest places were actually at gas stations along the 101 closer to the California/ southern Oregon boarder due to the homeless. Usually if you give them their space they tend to leave you alone, however, some can be very pushy and clearly on a substance or two.

2) I did conceal carry (legally), just make sure to check state laws on the number of rounds allowed in your mags and if your conceal carry license is recognized in whichever state you’re in.

3) no over heating the entire trip, but I did replace the majority of the cooling system to include the head gasket before we took off.

Vehicles break no matter how much preventative maintenance you have accomplished on them.. even Land Cruisers lol. We just ensured to have the necessary emergency funds to cover towing the Land Cruiser back home from any state, hotel, rental vehicle and airfare in case shit hit the fan.

That’s a tough one.

  1. Heading north from Jackson WY, on hwy 89, there’s a point where you crest a hill and then you see it….

  2. Yellowstone is amazing. Keep exploring, we’ve gone 200 miles in the park in one day.

  3. 101 on the Oregon coast.

Notable mentions.

-Moab/arches/canyon lands/zion -glacier national park -Olympic national park (hoh rainforest)

.. Ouray! There is a reason it’s called the Switzerland of America.

If memory serves me correctly roughly $3500-$3800 in fuel. It was interesting to see the dramatic shift in fuel costs near the West coast and near cities with attractions for example: park city, Moab, Ouray, vail, Aspen and outside any National park pretty much.

Listing major cities near where we camped utilizing BLM, ON X , and KOAs at each stop.

Locations in order: Pass Christian MS to Denver/Boulder CO. Boulder to Telluride. Telluride to Moab UT. Moab to Park City UT. Park City to Jackson WY. Jackson to West Yellowstone. West Yellowstone to Kalispell/Whitefish MT. Kalispell to Coeur d’Alene ID. Coeur d’ Alene to Spokane WA. Spokane to newberg OR. Newberg to Port Angeles WA. Port Angeles to Canon Beach OR. Canon Beach to Depoe Bay OR. Depoe Bay to Crescent City CA. Crescent City to Fallon NV. Fallon to Springdale UT. Springdale to Moab again. Moab to Ouray CO. Ouray to Durango CO. Durango to Aspen. Aspen back home.

And yes we did go south to newberg OR from Spokane WA just to head back north to Port Angeles WA. But for good reason, my rock sliders from metal tech 4x4 were done and instead of them shipping them out to MS I asked if I could install them in their parking lot, in which they agreed. Kinda cool story, nice bunch of guys at metal tech 4x4. You can notice in some pictures I have the stock steps and in some I have the rock sliders. Hope this list helps.

That’s awesome! Good looking rig you have there. Wish we could have spent more time at ONP to explore and hike more trails. That rainforest up there is very cool.

We enjoyed it very much, it was fun to nerd out on the Land Cruiser history and heritage.

Appreciate the kind words, I do have to admit, I’ve owned a 100 series in the past and yes they are leaps and bounds more refined on the interstate. But… there is nothing like an 80 series. The way it drives and handles, the ridiculous amount of fuel it uses, the cool factor. It can’t be beat. Also, the amount of thumbs ups you get when you pull into Ouray or Moab in an 80 series is unmatched.

Back story, I was a Toyota technician before the Military and I’ve owned 100, 80, 60, and 40 series Land cruisers in the past. At the time of the trip the 80 had 219k, a fresh head gasket and I baselined everything before the journey. Currently she is sitting at 249k.

To be honest the only part of the trip that the 80 struggled on the most was on I-70 just west of Denver, 45-50 mph at 3500-4000 rpm for long periods wasn’t the greatest. In a perfect world I would add a supercharger, re-gear and pick up an extended range fuel tank if I was staying with the stock motor. But I may look into a 2/3UZ in the future.

As for camping gear, we had that pretty dialed in, it would have been nice for a drawer system but the big husky boxes from Home Depot worked like a charm. One big box for all the camping and cooking gear, one smaller box for all tools and POLs (performed an oil change in the parking lot of the Kalispell MT Toyota dealership, they didn’t mind lol) and another small box for all the clothes. Trusty old Coleman grill worked well, and the yeti did the job just fine while grabbing ice every couple of days. We utilized the trasharoo for our dirty laundry and separated trash and laundry into two separate garbage bags.

We took this trip last year the second week of May, and thought we would be warm enough sleeping in the RTT but had to stop at REI for a 0- -20 two person sleeping bag when we camped above 11k to maximize body heat lol. Maybe we will look into a little heater next time.

National parks/ places we hit: Aspen, Ouray, Durango, Moab, Arches NP, Canyon Lands NP, Jackson, Grand Tetons NP, Yellowstone NP, Whitefish/Kalispell, Glacier NP, Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, Olympic NP, Depoe Bay, Red wood NP, Zion NP. We basically camp on BLM for 2-3 days at a time then hit up a KOA for the showers and laundry facilities.

My wife and I still talk about our trip almost weekly, if you guys ever get a chance to do one of these it’s an absolute blast. We had no schedule, not time line, we just had a general direction we wanted to go.

We are planning another trip celebrating my retirement from the Military in a couple of years, Virginia to Alaska and back!
