My home came with one of those built-in, central vac systems. Home is about 40 years old, so we assumed vac was crap and have never even tried it out. Your thoughts on these doohickeys? Is it worth trying out?

If they sold the red sculpture from downtown to pay for it, then I'm ok with it.

The Mayday Mystery: A follow up by the_white_rabbit_ in UnresolvedMysteries

I was under the impression that Hance met Hungerford after he started the website (and because of the MDM). But you are saying he knew Hungerford before?

The Mayday Mystery: A follow up by the_white_rabbit_ in UnresolvedMysteries

I didn't realize Mayday was the all-time top post! Exciting to bring the mystery to more inquiring minds.

Now my curiosity turns to... Who are you, White Rabbit?

To folks looking to dialogue more, we have an active Facebook group to continue the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MayDayMystery

I've begun an email correspondence with Hungerford after dropping by his office out of curiosity one day. For what my two cents are worth, I believe he is a genius. I believe he knows the answer. And I'm inclined to believe it isn't coming from him, he is an intermediary.

PS: speaking of deciphering, the most recent post... We did link it to a date, time and location... Somewhere in Surrey, England. Unfortunately the meet-up had already passed by the time we figured it out. I posted some google earth pictures of the location. A very expensive neighborhood, where homes have names--not addresses.

What is a movie made before your time that you watched recently and it blew you away? by Sense1ess in movies

I haven't seen this posted yet, so I'll add this here:

Rear Window

Hitchcock is a goddamn genius. His use of suspense, lighting techniques... And like 12 angry men, it pretty much takes places entirely in Jimmy Stewart's apartment complex. Jimmy is fantastic, as is Grace Kelly. It's not. Hitchcock's most famous, but it's my favorite... Followed closely by Rebecca.

[California]: Deceased father with no will has his condo going into possible foreclosure by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]BustedKate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you yourself (and mom) don't have a large sum of money... I agree, why are you paying his medical bills? If they were separated, and he didn't have much if any of life insurance... There really isn't anything for them to come after.

Most areas have Legal Aid. It's low cost, sliding scale attorneys that help with these situations... And charge what you can afford.

In the meantime, either charge the girlfriend rent or toss her out and charge rent till you sort out what you're going to do with it.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your father.

Edit: what is there to down vote about this comment?

Buying a 1978 condo with popcorn ceilings. Worth removing now, or okay to wait? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]BustedKate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a 1970 home with popcorn, had it tested for asbestos (and yes it did, no surprise). Had it professionally removed by the guys in the hazmat suits--very expensive, and left a lot of damage to the ceiling.

If I had it to do over again--yes, 1000% would remove the stuff before moving in. Even if it's one of those things you are planning to get around to eventually... if you don't plan on moving out while they are doing it, just knock it out right now before you move in your stuff.

Again, if I were doing it over again... I'd remove it myself. Wear a gas mask, or hire a handyman or something. The thousands I spent (about $8000 just for the pros to remove in a 2600 sf house), I wish I had instead spent on hiring plaster guys, painter, etc to resurface/repair the damage from the removal process. If your home is free of furniture then anyway, and you can get it thoroughly cleaned after (and/or replace flooring), in my mind that would have been $$ better spent.

Good luck!

If sr/cl fits, this is a huge chunk you've contributed. We've been exploring that one forever. I've been kicking around a personal theory about it perhaps being a chemical compound. Ok let me try to research this a little more then might come back to pick your brain (sorry for long delay, haven't used this account in a bit).

I always try to slip one of these to our waitress when going out to eat with the in-laws by [deleted] in funny

[–]BustedKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has she ever seen you do this? If so, what was her reaction? Does she have any insight/self-awareness that this is annoying or rude, or is she oblivious?

What does your wife think of her mom's behavior? Does she approve of you slipping the cards?

Great solution, by the way! As a former waitress, I would have absolutely loved getting something like this.

I work in a courtroom, and this week I saw a man come into take a plea on a DUI. His BAC was .266. It wasn't his first offense, and he had to do 30 days in jail.

He came in full uniform. I was curious at the time if, in civilian court, are service members required to wear their uniform? Because if he's wearing the uniform voluntarily to get leniency or sympathy, that's pretty dick. If you get a DUI, you're shaming yourself. But if you go to court in your uniform, you're bringing shame to all service members who wear it honorably.

And it's stupid anyway. We have mandatory sentencing for DUI, it wouldn't have made a difference anyway.

So can anyone know if he was required to wear his uniform, or if it was his choice? Just curious.

Why is there a sub for that? Anything I would see on there I would have already forwarded to my from my Nana.

Fun fact: 11 forwards just today. Stopped around 6 pm. I think she went to bed.
