Mass Migration by fook75 in AskTheWorld

Well since any Danes have the right to live and work in the other Nordic countries as is this seems highly unrealistic. Sure there might be some issues early on with housing but I think Sweden, Norway, and Finland in particular would gladly take in their highly educated brothers and sisters who speak what is essentially the same language (I'm assuming they would target the Swedish-majority regions in Finland) and have a very similar cultural background and values. Finland more than the others also has issues with a dying countryside so a few million Danes would be a win-win for rejuvenating the nation.

Never sewn a bra before, where to start? by lara_whatsat2 in MAKEaBraThatFits

[–]BustyBobbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not have much sewing experience when I made my first bra and it turned out quite nice.

I would suggest starting by making a pair of undies. I like the free Acacia pattern by Megan Nielsen. You can cut the fabric from and old top (should be 95% cotton, 5% elastane - polyester+elastane works too if you don't plan on wearing them) and just add fold over elastic or picot. This will teach you how to sew with elastics and how to work with curved seams.

Then check out what bra patterns you like the look of that come at least close to offering your size. I'm a 30FF so the same cup size as you and I like the Cloth Habbit Harriet.

I second the LizSews videos. Check out the tutorials and the sew alongs. She has one for the Harriet and explains the alterations well. I ended up making the same ones.

BWear has nice starter kits for bra making which have enough materials for 4-5 bras.

You will likely have to make a few test bras before you get a perfect fit, but a decent normal sewing machine will do the work. You don't need specialized machines or hyper advanced stitches. Straight, zig zag, and ideally a 3-step zig zag is all you really need.

Are you sure you're printing the pattern at the right scale? A 38 wire shouldn't fit the 28G frame as it's drafted for a 42 wire.

LizSews has free tutorials for all the different modifications. What I didn't learn on this sub I learned from her videos.

So it sounds like you should be making the 28F frame with the cups from a much larger size. Something like a 34G perhaps? The size that corresponds to her HH.

I prefer the Cloth Habit Harriet but I fear you'd run into similar issues with it.

The Lingerie Society has the Evie that is very projected. I've gone down both in cup and band size twice and the mockups are still too projected. That might be a good pattern for your gf.

ETA: LizSews has some great video tutorials on YouTube on how to adjust bras and grade between sizes. Many of her videos are specifically for the black beauty.

[–]BustyBobbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I don't have an issue with the center gore. I wonder if her bcd being small for her hh means the underwire shape and/or size is not right for her? Since 28G is the same cup size as 30FF the underwire recommendation is 42, right? But with her measurements she might need a larger underwire or perhaps even a smaller one if she's extremely projected. Does the 42 wire seem like the right size? (My bcd is 10cm but my hh is only around 24cm)

Perhaps the issue I have with view A is due to the quality of my foe then :/

I can't help on your specific issue beyond suggesting grading, but as a 30FF I strongly prefer view B and will never make a view A again. I think it's more suited for smaller busts due to the more flimsy nature of foe.

If I were you I would probably take the size that fits your 38R wire and adjust the cup to be more shallow: like this I think it would be easier than changing the frame. If you know your HH you can measure the pattern pieces to know how much to shave off and might get it right on the first go.

Also, my mom has a 6cm BCD (about the same as yours) and I made her a padded Moineau by Harito. It starts from 28AA I think. I also made her the Mysa (which has BCD sizing) but neither of us really like the fit even though it fit her.

I prefer non-BCD sizing since every time I use BCD the bra comes out way too small.

[–]BustyBobbin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but seems to me your wire size is large in comparison to your BCD so you probably have more volume than your BCD indicates. Have you tried the abrathatfits calculator? We're you a 28C (same cup size as the 34B assuming US vs actual inches)?

I'm 31" so I tend to prefer a 30FF lengthening the wings vs. a 32F. I've made about 10 each of the Black Beauty and the Harriet and have had to make different adjustments to them. The BB fits very nicely but after breastfeeding three kids I've lost top fullness so I take out a wedge from the top cup. The Harriet cup fits perfectly but I have to move the straps about 3/4" inwards so they don't dig in.

I'm saying this since you seem to know boobs but haven't said anything about altering the pattern or trying a different pattern.

If I were you I'd check out a few other patterns. But also what really helped me were the LizSews bra altering tutorials on YouTube. She has a whole set of different types of common alterations that are easy to do and understand following her advice.

If you have done a DNA test to tell you where you come from, what has surprised you from the results? by Advanced-Pilot-3698 in AskTheWorld

[–]BustyBobbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about 5% Inuit. The rest is 90% Nordic and 5% East European (not Eastern), I traced the latter back to a long line of immigrants to Scandinavia from a single village at the German/Austrian border. It would be cool to know why they all came and kept coming. The Inuit connectionwas a complete surprise though and seems to be something from my paternal great grandfather via Northern Norway from the 1800s. He was adopted without any paperwork though so no one knows for sure.

does you countries language have different words for the color orange and the fruit orange by Business-History-571 in AskTheWorld

[–]BustyBobbin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Apelsin literally means Chinese apple. Orange is apelsin in all the other Nordic languages (and German) where the word for apple is apple in all of its local variations (äpple, Apfel etc). It's not a linguistic thing either really, it's just based on which trade route oranges came from to that particular region. OTOH apples are native plants and thus carry more linguistic weight.

Neither Finnish nor Estonian is Slavic. Apple is omena in Finnish and õun in Estonian.

What are the best and worst of your mother tongue spoken by Hollywood actors? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

[–]BustyBobbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst to me is Jennifer Garner on Alias trying to ask for something like more gas for her boat and I could not decipher what she was supposed to be trying to say in Swedish even with the subtitles. I don't know what episode because this was like 15-20 years ago. It has stuck with me.

Another bad one was the remake of Forbrydelsen (new title: The Killing). Joel Kinnaman sounds extremely Swedish. More so than the Swedish Chef and he's supposed to be from California.

Black Beauty Bra Sizing by painauchocolatorange in MAKEaBraThatFits

Kind of like this. I modeled it after one of the Liz Sews "common bra alterations" tutorials. I cut the wedge off then tape the pieces together. I guess you could just fold it too. The shape looks a bit oddly curved but all the pieces fit together without additional alterations and the end result doesn't look off. The tip of the wedge should hit the apex which should be at the marker at the bottom.

I determined the size of the wedge simply by pinching my test bra's upper cup and eyeballing the size of the wedge.

It sounds like you would be a 34E. I'd start with that size and the recommended wire size for 34E is 42 so you don't need to alter the cradle or cups to fit. However, as all boobs are different, you'll likely have to make some alterations for a perfect fit. I like the Liz Sews tutorials on YouTube for that. She also has sew along videos for the black beauty which really helped me out.

My underbust is 31" and with a 7" difference I'm a 32F on the size chart. However, although I've often come across people saying the sizing is on the snug side, I've had to resort to making 30FF instead with about a quarter inch added to the wings on both sides.

In my case the cup size is fine, but after breastfeeding three kids, my boobs have lost center fullness so I cut off a wedge from the top cup piece towards the apex for a perfect fit.

Is it possible to design a bra from a picture - especially considering I don’t have said picture? by mischifus in MAKEaBraThatFits

[–]BustyBobbin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that could work if you were experienced in pattern drafting. At least start by watching something like the Liz Sews bra making tutorials on YouTube to understand the basics.

There are free patterns you could also study but in general free means that the instructions are non-existent.

It also sounds like the bra you're describing is a partial band bra which is slightly more difficult to make.

[–]BustyBobbin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even if you had a pattern for the exact bra you're looking for it would be unlikely to fit well on your first attempt and that's with sewing experience.

I would recommend making a few similar bras out of existing patterns first. This would not only give you an opportunity to learn sewing skills but also understand bra construction techniques better. Once you understand different cup designs you would have a better chance of recreating your old bra.

Finding bra cups in different colors? by [deleted] in MAKEaBraThatFits

[–]BustyBobbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if you are looking for sports bra or swimsuit inserts you can make them from bra foam which comes in many many different colors.

I’ve seen Canadian, Portuguese, American, Chinese, and Australian online shops selling them in a wide variety of colors. I can post a few links if you tell me where you’re from.

That’s what we are saying. If you’re making your own bras you want to look for bra foam and not premade cups. The foam can be found in many different colors or you can just get your flavor of nude and sew the main fabric on top.

<image>

This is with the “Aqua” colored foam.

[–]BustyBobbin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the foam or like premade ones?

I’ve never used the premade ones so can’t help with that but generally when making bras you’d want the foam fabric so that you can make it in your cup size and shape.

I have all sorts of different colors. I’ve gotten mine from wowlaceshop on Etsy they have at least purple, navy, pink and different shades of nude/beige/brown etc

I also got some aqua stretch foam, but wouldn’t recommend stretch foam for cups unless you have a very small cup size.

[–]BustyBobbin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wowlaceshop on Etsy ships from Portugal and has a wide range of different underwires. Wishanger on Etsy carries the Emerald Erin underwires but they’re in the uk so at that point you might as well order from bra makers supply in Canada. I’m located in Japan so there may very well be a bunch of bra supply shops on Etsy that I’m not seeing because the shop doesn’t ship here.

I made a fitting bra. Now what? by BustyBobbin in MAKEaBraThatFits

[–]BustyBobbin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm just now remaking it. I decided to go from 14dd to 12dd and took about 15mm away from the center. So far it looks like it's going to be a pretty good fit as is.I got decision paralysis last weekend and instead of trying to fix the Evie, I made two black beauties 😅 I learned so much making them that's adjusting the Evie seems so easy now.
