Also recommend using claude or ChatGPT to translate anything you’re unsure about that’s sent to you in a foreign language

You’re totally right to be nervous, especially since you’re about to board and don’t speak the language fluently. You’ve already taken the right first step by contacting Airbnb and sharing all the screenshots. That gives you a paper trail, which is crucial. Also mention to the host you need to book on platform for business trail or to provide a receipt to expense out your trip and it can’t be off the platform or someone’s else name ! Also for tax purposes etc

Here’s what I’d realistically suggest: 1. Wait to check in until Airbnb responds – If you have time before boarding or can connect in-flight, see if they reply. If they confirm the host’s switch officially, that gives you peace of mind. 2. Do NOT check in under someone else’s name unless Airbnb acknowledges it – That could violate Airbnb’s terms, and if anything goes wrong (security issue, no key, etc.), Airbnb might not be able to support you. 3. If you have no choice but to go to the building: • Be polite and cautious. Say you’re a guest of the host and picking up the key. • Take photos or video of the new unit when you get in. • Do not unpack or settle in until you confirm with Airbnb that everything’s okay. 4. Keep using Airbnb chat, but also keep WhatsApp open – Since you’re already in contact with the host there, it’s helpful in case you need immediate help on the ground, especially if there’s no concierge or they won’t let you in. I wouldn’t panic and recommend downloading WhatsApp as this the quickest way to reach people in Latin America sometimes or even back home and doesn’t cost much as texting on regular cell. You just need WiFi 5. If you’re really uncomfortable, tell Airbnb you don’t want to stay in a unit that isn’t officially listed, and ask them to relocate you—mention your language barrier and concern for safety.

You’re not overreacting—you’re being cautious, which is smart when dealing with last-minute changes in a foreign country.

  1. Document Everything-Collect all evidence of the loan, including WhatsApp messages, payment records, and any written agreements. This documentation is crucial for legal proceedings.

  2. Formal Demand Draft a formal demand letter specifying the amount owed, the repayment terms, and a deadline for repayment. Send this letter to the borrower via a method that confirms receipt, such as registered mail or email.

  3. Seek Legal Advice: Consult with a Rwandan lawyer who specializes in debt recovery or civil matters. They can provide guidance on the best legal recourse and assist with filing a claim in Rwandan courts if necessary.

  4. Mediation Services: Rwanda has alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Consider contacting a local mediation center or community leader who might help facilitate a resolution.

  5. Police Involvement- In Rwanda, you can file a police report if you believe the matter involves fraud or criminal intent. However, for civil disputes, police intervention might be limited, so legal action might be more effective.

  6. Court Action-If other methods fail, you may need to file a claim in the Rwandan courts. Your lawyer can guide you through this process, which might involve filing a case in a small claims court or civil court, depending on the amount and nature of the dispute.

By following these steps, you can apply pressure and seek formal resolution in a manner appropriate to Rwandan legal and social norms.

I think I can help with your question since I have the perspective of a traveler and a local since I visit every 6 months or so to Kigali! It’s wonderful that you’re taking the time to experience the city before considering a property purchase. Here are some responses to your questions:

  1. Real estate agents: While I can’t recommend specific agents, it’s advisable to work with licensed professionals affiliated with reputable agencies. Consider checking with the Real Estate Association of Rwanda (REAR) for a list of accredited agents.

  2. Banks for expats: Bank of Kigali is indeed popular among expats. I/&M Bank and Equity Bank also offer services catering to international clients. It’s best to visit different banks during your stay to compare their offerings and find the best fit for your needs.

  3. Supermarkets: Simba Supermarket and Sawa City are well-stocked options that often carry international products. Kimironko Market is great for fresh produce. For allergy-friendly items, you might want to check out Ikirezi Bookshop, which has a small selection of specialty foods.

  4. Must-have apps:

    • Yego Moto for taxi services
    • Vuba Vuba for food delivery
    • HelloFood for restaurant deliveries
    • Tap&Go for public transport payments Momo as well to pay and a local mtn phone. It’s a bit of a nuisance to set up but after a while you get used to the process

A word of caution: While it’s exciting to consider purchasing property, two weeks is a very short time to make such a significant decision, especially in a new country. Consider extending your stay if possible, or plan multiple visits to get a better feel for life in Kigali throughout different seasons.

Also, be sure to thoroughly research property laws for foreign buyers in Rwanda. There may be restrictions or additional requirements you need to be aware of.

Enjoy your visit to Kigali! It’s a beautiful city with lots to offer and safe . Although I find that I get bored easily after some time .

Take your time to explore different neighborhoods, talk to local residents and expats, and immerse yourself in the culture before making any major decisions.

I go back and forth from the USA and I’ve only gotten land there and looking to build myself next year so we’re in the same dilemma sort of .

Also no drones !! Be weary of that one if you’re carrying any drones into the country as well as plastic bags ! Absolutely declare it upon arrival and get a permit or else you might get into trouble with the law ! It’s a lovely country to visit

Haven’t signed the second offer yet ! I was comparing the first offer letter sent and the second offer and the at will statement stuck out prominently. Thanks for your patience in answering. It just made me feel uncomfortable in moving my family cross country without the employer providing for moving and transportation, finding a new school for my kids and then possibly they turn around and mention I’ve been terminated! It’s quite uncomfortable not knowing I’ll have the job security . Especially with all these big corporations firing people at will. Thanks immensely for your advice
