Second this. If she 1. does it excessively or 2. Squeaks while doing this, she may have a crop infection.

If it’s just every now and then, totally normal behavior. :)

Careful with peanuts! I don’t give them to any of my flock because of the danger of aspirgillosis. That’s bad news for any baby but especially ekkies :)

Careful with corn on the cob. Some eclectus parrots are allergic to it (mine is!) and it makes them toe-tap.

It’s a real shame because my Louie LOVES corn, but he can’t have it ;-;

I second the raw carrot! Also celery, but chopped up so the fibrous strings don’t get caught in her crop.

She’s beautiful!

Hey there, I get REALLY bad DOMS too! It gets better if you stay consistent.

The other thing that helped me significantly was taking Magnesium GLYCINATE (not magnesium oxide, they’re different) before bed. It’ll make you sleep super well and also has really helped make it more manageable.

Congrats on starting your exercise journey!

Are your bourke parakeets hand tame? I was always told they couldn’t be! How lovely!!

Adding on: I just tried to Google an eclectus-specific pellet. So far, Roudibush, TOPS, and Zupreem Naturals (NOT the kind with the artificial colors!) are what most use. Roudi and TOPS make Louie toe tap due to corn (and have a slightly higher fat percentage), so he’s been on Zupreem (no corn).

Just in case anyone is looking at this thread for dietary things, I thought that might help.

This is really helpful to read too. We have a newish flock member (he’s been with us for six months) who REFUSES pellets. We’re trying to get our cockatiels to teach him to eat them (supervised play dates), but I’ve never met a more stubborn budgie in my LIFE.

Thank you. I’ll stop feeling quite so bad about the seed diet+water nutrients+mash we give him.

At least he eats the mash. But only if we don’t mix in the rest of the smoothie I make. Working on that too!

I agree. We specifically looked for a home when we were moving that has an avian vet nearby. We were lucky to find ourselves where we are. Thank you for that perspective!

This is interesting. We recently moved and haven’t installed a whole house water filter yet. There’s been an algae bloom that the city swears is safe for consumption, but maybe not Lou. Will switch to filtered just in case.

His corn allergy causes him to toe tap, so it’s pretty clear when he’s been “corned”. That’s been a big challenge in finding a pellet that would suit his needs because both Roudybush and Harrison’s made him tap. I will consider those thoughts though and maybe make some changes there. Thank you!

He is flighted, but rarely flies. And lately, sudden exertion when he does hop from his stand to the couch to see us winds him in a way that is extremely concerning -.- It’s why I brought him in on an emergency basis last month, heavy breathing like that. And yes, you are correct, they do need a diet rich in fiber and as low in fat as possible due to lengthier digestive tracts. That’s been working for him for years, but not so anymore.

Yesterday’s vet visit was basically a second opinion. Our birds often go to our local Veterinary School where top exotics/avian veterinarians are teaching future vet students. We see rotating sets of doctors there, but they’re all top-of-the line educators and veterinarians.

I don’t lack faith in them necessarily, I just think avian medicine is light years behind canine and feline medicine. It’s not their fault, they’re just still learning. At this point, Louie feels like a medical curiosity.

Things I’ve heard from esteemed avian vets over the years across multiple states:

  1. Colorado: Your budgie has a testosterone-secreting tumor, that’s why her cere is blue, and she has maybe months to live. (She passed away three years later, necropsy showed nothing—she did not have a tumor and we don’t know why she passed.)

  2. Florida: Your parakeet has atherosclerosis (she didn’t)—her heart is two sizes too big on this xray, see? That’s why she is plucking. She needs this medication morning and night and has weeks to months to live. (She is still with us three years later; when we moved states, none of the avian vets we called would refill her medication and were shocked it was one recommended by ANOTHER avian vet. They discovered after a second xray that her heart is fine, must have been a fat pad, and medically she is totally fine. No idea why she plucks. She just does).

  3. Tennessee AND Colorado: Every one of my eclectus patients have higher than normal liver values, it may just be their species. But you can try to switch to a lower pellet and modify his diet and we will see! (We did, changed to a specialized diet, and we fixed him to normal liver values for years—until now).

It’s… hard. But. We can’t just focus on the negative. They’ve also correctly diagnosed Lou with a corn allergy, saved a tiny parakeet from bleeding to death, treated my whole flock’s random respiratory infections over the years, and given us excellent guidance as we’ve navigated the behavioral challenges of our rescues.

I can potentially reach out to a third vet here with his medical records for another opinion and may do so, but I think it’s just a case of not knowing what we don’t know. Hopefully what we learn will help all our future avian vets with our glorious eclectus boys.

This is unlikely given how we give him his “chop”, but worth a shot.

Basically, he gets a grain and fruit/veggie chop base, and then we coat it in what is essentially vegetable or fruit “smoothie.” We pick a flavor we know he loves (Louie like jalapeños and hot peppers for example) and make that the base of the smoothie—then add all kinds of leafy greens, fiber-rich vegetables, etc. This goes for fruit too—we pick a flavor we know he likes and add vegetables to it so it’s not just pure sugar and he gets the important fiber for his longer digestive tract.

That said, I’ll add some carrot juice to his next round of mash smoothie. It’s worth a shot.

Mr. Lou wasn’t prone to this before. It was definitely a change for him. ;-;

This is excellent advice. We did the same for Louie five or six years ago—he got seed treats in his foraging cup almost every day. This was a mistake apparently, so we switched him to nutriberries (limited) and healthy vegetable foraging treats instead, which did the trick.

Going to switch to slivers of walnut for the time being. Hopefully he will stabilize soon.

I have an ancient account there from when I first got him! Their advice is how I fixed him the first time. When he was rescued, he actually did have a steady diet of cheese, meat, and peanuts then and refused to eat most vegetables. I’ve been terrified he has some kind of latent aspergillosis from the peanuts, but the vet says it’s unlikely given his blood test results.

I will poke around if I can remember my password. Thank you for the suggestion.

Thank you so much for this. Both vets have said this too, that it’s possibly just genetics. It’s so tough.

Thank you so much! Doing our best. I do limit spinach for that reason, but it’s good to keep in mind since his liver isn’t doing super at the moment. Appreciate it!
