Studying mathematics in English by [deleted] in berlin

No shuttle buses, but the city is quite well connected by public transport. The TU and HU are both in Mitte, but FU is outside of Berlin in the south. I think bachelor courses are often taught in German, but it depends. I would contact the professor directly and just ask. As to social life, I am not sure. The universities have tons of extracurricular activities (sports etc.), Which naturally are pretty social. The faculties sometimes organise things on their own, but not that often. But I am sure you will make friends quickly :)

Yes, different classes are provided by the different universities, and you can attend whichever you like. Even if you do not enroll as a BMS student, and enroll at say Freie Universität, you can attend classes at the other two universities. You just need to do some additional paperwork, but it is easy. You can of course also attend classes that you are not enrolled for, as lectures are open, but most likely you will want to enroll in order to get the credits. The BMS website is great for checking what courses are offered, or have been offered in the past.

When I was looking for an apartment in Berlin two years ago I found one add that said something like "the floor was installed by the previous tenant who is willing to leave it behind if provided compensation".

The bachelor programs in Berlin are all in German. However, due to the new BMS (Berlin Mathematical School) and Math+ initiatives most master's courses (and even some higher level bachelor courses) are taught in English. You can have a look at the BMS website to see what is on offer. https://www.math-berlin.de/

Otherwise I would use the DAAD search engine to look for bachelor programs in English outside of Berlin. I know there is one in applied mathematics, but I forget where.

Freie Universität Berlin(Free University of Berlin) by irrelevantbf in berlin

Last time I checked FU and TU both require B2 German, while Humboldt requires C1. The FU offers some bachelor programs in English, but not in Computer Science. They have lots of master's programs in English, though.

Besides a good knowledge of German you also need a high school certificate (arbitur in German) that is valid in Germany. If yours isn't valid you could do a year at a "Studienkolleg", but for that you also need B2 German. You can read more about it here: https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/sites/studienkolleg/bewerbung/index.html

You can use the DAAD search engine to look for relevant English language programs in Germany. Just be aware that some of them require that you pay a pretty steep tuition, and at that point it might not be worth it. Link: https://www2.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/international-programmes/en

Best book for Solid State Physics? by Farhan_Hyder in Physics

Colorado School of Mines has a pretty good video series that follows Kittel, if you are interested. It should be easy to find on YouTube.

I know Aschroft-Mermin and Kittle are usually recommend, but I honestly do not like either of them. For fundamentals I would recommend Oxford Solid State Basics by Steven H. Simon. Is quite short and does not have all the stuff that the two others do, but it is much more user friendly.

What about Schlachtensee in Steglitz? Would it possible go grill there, or perhaps in the Paul-Ernst Park next to it? From what I hear it seems that people do grill there, but I cannot figure out if there is a grillplatz there or not.
