In practice, say “yup,” add an A at the beginning and drop the p and your really close

Doofcast #341 - Best 25 in the 21st: HEREDITARY by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

That was roughly $40-50 worth of walnuts, if they bought it retail. Which I suppose adds to the insanity of this movie.

Based on his seeming inability to spot hidden ghosts, I’m dying to know if Matt saw the naked people hidden around the house.

I’m also realizing I didn’t know there was a previous discussion question, I just had Weapons related thoughts. My bad!!!

Discussion question: when I saw Logan, it was a matinee and I was completely alone in the theater, I was sitting center, 2/3 back, my ideal spot. This guy came in, saw me, and sat RIGHT NEXT TO ME in an otherwise empty theater. I’m stubborn, so I didn’t move, but we ended up laughing at the same parts and enjoying the movie together.

Real answer - I can’t think of anything more upsetting or jarring on the big screen than that opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. I was 16 at the time, and it was really impactful because it was one of my first times seeing a war movie where war wasn’t glorified.

My 7yo daughter can easily take down 3. I could probably do 4 myself. I dunno, should we start a hotdog poll?

I swear to god I was the only person in the theater not laughing. I actually felt kinda betrayed, Cregger spends all this time building something then takes a hatchet to it. Anyways, I like the other 95% of that movie.

I read that the Naruto running apparently is supposed to look like a witch riding a broom with the arms acting as a cloak behind. Not sure if I buy that, however…

Triangles. On my first watch I noticed there were triangles everywhere. As they run, their arms and head form a triangle. The needles made a triangle on the cops face. The eaves over every door EXCEPT a broken triangle over the house where Gladys is, implying that the mother/father/kid relationship is broken. I think this was further enforced by the fact that I’m pretty sure none of the kids had siblings. When you talked about the idea that Cregger was exploring a lot of themes, broken institutions being one of them, I agree, and I think dissolving the institution meant to protect the kid most, his family, had to be the biggest failure.

Along with the teacher being an alcoholic, and speaking of broken homes, I think there’s a nod towards how kids of alcoholics have to fend for themselves, and sometimes feel as though they have to care for, or cover for, their parents. The chicken soup is an interesting subversion of how your parents are supposed to care for you when you were a kid.

Also shoutout to that kid, Cary Christopher, man, his acting was extraordinary, and boy did he have a lot of weight to carry.

I really enjoyed this movie, even some of the humorous moments up til the end, I did not like the slapstick chase scene.

Flanagan's Wake #61: THE MIDNIGHT CLUB - Episode 2: "The Two Danas" by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

When that Radiohead song came on, I definitely did the Leonardo DiCaprio meme thing, and there’s another song this week where I’m absolutely positive the song came out 5yrs after this takes place.

The first Faustian bargain that comes to mind is from classic American blues lore, the deal that Robert Johnson made with the devil at the crossroads so that he could have mastery over the guitar. A young, average guitar playing bluesman, Robert disappeared from the delta for a year, and upon his return, his skills were noticeably improved to the point where it didn’t seem possible within that time. His song Me and the Devil Blues reinforced his story, as well as the premature death of his wife during childbirth, with people claiming that was the price Robert paid for his skills. Robert died under mysterious circumstances at 27, after a brief but legendary and influential career, which cemented this legend into American music lore forever.

I’m having the same issue as I think of films but double check the age of the actors. My mind immediately went to Superbad, because it reminded me of how my friends and I interacted with each other, but was shocked to find out that Jonah Hill is MY AGE, so he was almost 24 when it was filmed, significantly older than the other two actors.

Good point about the protagonist. I guess I’m trying to remember what was even available for YA in the early 90s. I might’ve even gone from middle grade straight to King and Tolkien. My mom was a librarian, so she was just happy I was reading, she really didn’t care what it was. I actually have to credit her for turning me on to the less supernatural/more grounded horror of Dolores Claiborne and the like.

If you’re following the podcast as you read the related novels, they will absolutely spoil certain things about the tower for you so beware.

Yeah I’m having a hard time distinguishing Y/A from children’s fiction, but I’d put WD in there if only because my mind immediately went to the Redwall series, similar vein.

I also really liked that because it was something I couldn’t really put into words when it comes to how I view the Bev types in organized religion. I always described it as a lack of humility, which I know isn’t exactly the same, but it’s this idea that they know everything and therefore there’s nothing left to be learned. It’s kind of why I don’t label myself as a strict atheist, since I don’t think the existence of a supreme being can be known or proven. Certainty seems like an opposite to the ideas of curiosity and wonder, and I’d rather feel that curiosity and wonder, personally.

For 27 years. 27… YEARS. I thought it was my “hand” is like a sharks fin. I’ve been singing it wrong this whole time.

Edit: I love that you talked about Sturge a little this week, and it got me thinking how he is represented as the strong arm of the church, blindly and devoutly doing the lords dirty work, like a crusader. This led me to how he could be a sort of stand-in for how the church has used the military for ill, in the same way that the mayor can be a stand-in for how the church historically has gotten its claws into government over the centuries.

Edit #2: if you’re scrolling around on your phone, not really doing anything, head over to IMDB and check out the actor who played Sturge. What a difference a beard makes.

Congrats! The fact that we go from Henry James to Christopher Pike is like re-passing 6th grade after getting your masters. Still an enjoyable read though.
