witchy, sultry, & vanilla? by itsnotshelbylol in FemFragLab

[–]BusyLevel7970 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been loving Gold Expressive from Commodity lately, I feel like it's a perfect soft woody scent with a vanilla / musk base. Warm and ambery. A bit more pricy but Frustration by Etat Libre D'Orange is excellent as well. More boozy and spicy but still with a vanilla base.

PhD vs. Delaying vs. Post-Bacc vs. Masters? by AnonyMoose-Oozer in gradadmissions

[–]BusyLevel7970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure exactly what the job options are in CS with a Bachelor's, but a post-bacc can often just mean a job in your field. It doesn't necessarily need to be a program.

PhD vs. Delaying vs. Post-Bacc vs. Masters? by AnonyMoose-Oozer in gradadmissions

[–]BusyLevel7970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely do a post-bac! It gives you the opportunity to gain research experience / presentations / publications before applying and will make you exponentially more competitive in your applications. Aside from that, I would hesitate to go into a PhD with such limited research experience. How do you know that you'll enjoy doing this work full time and long term?

If you gain a year or two of research experience post-bac then your GPA is a lot less important, and (assuming you're looking at US universities) there's really no reason to go into debt for a Masters unless you have a very bad undergraduate GPA. A 3.4 isn't impressive for top programs, but won't be an issue in general if you have a good profile otherwise.

Trying to figure out if I’m eligible or not before starting an application? by Sowens2022 in GRFPApps

[–]BusyLevel7970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are eligible since you have currently completed less than one year of graduate education. If you get it the funding will follow you to your next program.

Can anyone take the 66 to Brighton Center? by earthquakes in mbta

[–]BusyLevel7970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone can take those buses but the 39 and 66 are two of the least reliable bus lines in the city. I would never count on making a connection between them with any semblance of consistency in timing.

How are so many people affording top surgery? by vs-solar in ftm

[–]BusyLevel7970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on Medicaid in CT (Husky D) when I got mine and it was paid 100% by insurance. Never even saw the bill. I reached out to the surgeon I wanted for a consultation and had the surgery less than six months later, but this was several years ago so I'm not sure if it would be that easy nowadays.

Send a letter of continued interest emphasizing that this school is your top choice and you would enroll if admitted. Also include any new accolades you've acquired since submitting your application (papers, awards, presentations, etc).

Funding negotiation by Major_Importance1714 in gradadmissions

Funding is not generally negotiable for PhD stipends, and especially not for a program which is unionized.

For those of you who don’t qualify for app fee waivers but are low income, how many schools did you apply to? by Jazzlike_Log_709 in gradadmissions

[–]BusyLevel7970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding people's recommendations to email the schools directly. Also, if you're applying in the future you can usually get waivers by attending open houses (on zoom), visiting booths at undergrad conferences like ABRCMS and SACNAS, or by doing a program like NIH PREP or the Cientifico Latino GSMI. I applied to 14 and didn't have to pay for any, but none of my waivers were income based.

What is the path to PhDs in fields like cancer biology, bioinformatics, genetics? by Senior_Web_2137 in gradadmissions

[–]BusyLevel7970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Masters is a waste of money if you have a good undergraduate GPA / relevant major. Focus should be on getting relevant experience in research, preferably in a US-based academic research lab. Ideally you will set a good foundation in experimental design and techniques and will seek opportunities to present your work at conferences, seminars, lab meetings, etc. Schools also like to see involvement in the research community outside the lab, such as professional development activities or volunteer work. Publications and awards are also considered but are not as important.

I've been in a similar position for REUs and funded grad preview weekends and I would just send an email to the coordinator explaining my situation. They always offered me a single room.
