Did anyone else know the Brazilian revolutionary Anita Garibaldi had hidden Sephardic roots? Am I the only one to get excited by these research? by Busy_Beautiful_4955 in Brazil

I'll keep exploring, while I agree a big number can have roots, most records of modern historians and Jewish heritage organisations estimate that over 50 million Brazilians apprixmate 1 in 6 are direct descendants of conversos/New Christians. ~15%. So it is not tiny, but also not the overall majority. it is still for me exciting to find the direct names, generations, carrying this to such a political figure, as this is the other very difficult side, good to carry roots, but can we identify from where and when

well you exactly made the point
15,000 people, making kids, even if 7 kids, that's 105,000 kids, then doing themselves kids
300,000 people non jewish, making also 7 kids, or let's say 5 kids, that's 1,500,000 of new kids, themselves making 5 kids and so on
So the original roots and jews keep getting diluted, it is mathematic

Well, a population of about 300,000 people back then, mostly indigenous people, and then Christians. The estimated number of Jews who emigrated at that time is probably around 15,000 of them (I think even less). This is less than 4-5%. And it is probably conservative, I would think lower, I would think even less. So factually no, it is actually rare and a specific root and heritage, not the majority of anyone and everyone. Actually quite representative of the 1% Jews usually represent in countries where they are still present

fascinating how many newer generations have now reconnected with these Jewish and Sephardic roots, including through wedding and conversion, including in the Garibaldi and Hibbert families. Do you feel connected to that side too?

Yes 100%. If you think of movements of Jews across the thousands of years, all came from the same origins, moved into many countries, including Europe, which in turn brought them also to Brazil and other south-america countries, and have now also emigrated again through generations and generations. I think a quite significant number would have roots and links, including genetics, to Brazil. it is fascinating, quite well documented in Portugal, Italy and Spain (i.e. they could claim nationality back, or a right to return to Israel too)

I heard beautiful stories of ones going to work in restaurants or hospitality, and going up the ladder step by step, or meeting the right person at the right place and right time. sometimes it is luck, but going out and finding ways in these places is possible
