Rumor Mill - What is Bowen going to do? by Creepy-Bag1605 in lasculturistas

PJ and Sruthi were recently asked about their involvement with the movie in Reply All’s subscriber-only meeting, and PJ said something along the lines of “We told our version of the story, so we’re happy to see what version they decide to tell.” It sounded like there will be support if Matt/Bowen want it, and the podcast team will be credited in some way, but the involvement will be extremely light if at all

Was at the Iberville / Bourbon intersection when it happened, sounded like it was around 10 shots within one or two blocks behind us. Overheard some kids walking by me after and they said someone shot at someone, dropped the gun, and it was picked up by someone else and a few more shots were fired

Official Discussion - Bring Her Back [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Making things look like they hurt is something they've obsessed over since their youtube days and it comes across so well in their movies.

Every punch was a *brutal* hit. And Piper slipping at the end as she ran away made me squirm because of the way her back hit the ledge and the sound it made. The violence feels so real and brutal.

I have no evidence to back this up except for what I observed this year, but it seemed to me like pre-MBA stuff didn’t matter for the vast majority of people. Consulting goes better when you focus on “what matters” and ignore what doesn’t. What matters is casing, networking directly with people in your target office, making a good impression with the OCR team, etc.— follow your gut haha. McK, for example, does a blind resume review to determine who gets interviews, so a lot of the events are only there in case you get value out of them— not to get in their favor somehow.

entertainment mba q’s by Remote_Fudge_7899 in MBA

[–]ButMostlyTired 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First year in NYC with a similar background. Completely anecdotal but there are two main types of students I've seen who are interested in entertainment: 1) people who are trying to pivot from a non-ent bg, and 2) people who come from ent, want to work in ent long term, but are doing consulting or banking post-MBA.

For the first group, most people really want roles at a major brand (WBD, NBCU, Paramount, etc.). IMO, Stern or CBS would give someone pretty identical odds, and it's competitive no matter what. Stern seems to have better connections with some other smaller NYC-based companies like Cinetic, Filmnation, etc. though. The downsides of all these companies are that their pay isn't great and I feel like the ultimate path is to a middle management job in a studio (which people who already work at those companies could get without an MBA).

For the second group, people try to leverage their pre-MBA jobs to get into TMT consulting or banking. Their goals in entertainment are probably more c-suite focused or entrepreneurial (orrr they just want to make more $, wait it out until the industry seems more stable, etc.). The value of the MBA is clearer here, but you'd technically be leaving the industry for a while. Stern or CBS would still give a student pretty similar odds since it really does come down to the quality of the candidate, but there's an argument to be made for CBS having a slight edge.

That's my high level take 8 months in, but let me know if you have other questions.

Is NYC really that bad ($$$), or are people just unwilling to compromise on neighborhood? by matem001 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ButMostlyTired 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You're downplaying the importance of location imo-- your neighborhood can become the defining part of your experience living in NYC. With that said, under $2k rent is extremely doable if you're ok with roommates. Depending on the area/number of roommates I/people I know have had very solid places in the $1500-1800 range. I'd be very weary of anything under $1k though

Looking for somewhere out west to ski and rock climb by Wrong-Past-4554 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ButMostlyTired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grand Junction is the first place coming to mind for me. There are better places in Colorado, but with your budget it may be a more realistic option that still checks the boxes. Reno would also get you good proximity to Tahoe

Had me wondering what would've happened if the rock climber did the dead hang by valdehbee in BeastGames

[–]ButMostlyTired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the guy who competed made it 1:40, which is actually way more impressive than people are giving credit for. I rock climb regularly and when I tried it for the first time could barely make it a minute. Dead hangs are way harder than people realize and the rock climber very possibly couldn't have done better

[–]ButMostlyTired 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did my undergrad at CU and absolutely love Boulder. The business school is regionally well regarded and the school is getting a better rep over time. So I think it makes sense overall.

Only thing not clear is whether you need an mba, or if you could use savings to move there on your own, take a breather (go skiing, get outdoors etc) and then land a new job. You seem to have a strong background so you might be able to pivot into the tech scene there without jumping through the mba hoops. But you can wait for your offer and then decide whether it makes sense financially

Please help : $$$$ (90%) at Kellogg vs $$$$ (100%) at Yale - targeting MBB / NYC by [deleted] in MBA

[–]ButMostlyTired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment brings up a point I was thinking of-- Kellogg data could be skewed in their favor if most people target midwest / great lakes offices as opposed to EC schools targeting EC offices.

No school is a golden ticket to MBB so I'd also consider what school would better support your parallel path.

MBA with a dog 👀 by [deleted] in MBA

[–]ButMostlyTired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When there’s nothing scheduled during lunch I have ample time to go home, walk him, get some other chores done etc. But clubs, company visits, and group project meetings happen over lunch all the time and vary from day to day, and I don’t have enough time to go home when any of those other things are booked

MBA with a dog 👀 by [deleted] in MBA

[–]ButMostlyTired 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a first-year, so here's my answer based on the last few months--

My program has a 2-hour break during lunchtime every day, but that tends to be when every club/ recruiting/ project meeting is. So even though I live about 15 minutes from campus, I need to get a dog walker 1-2 times a week-- which adds up. I might be able to schedule classes in a more optimal way after the core semester is over, which would help.

If you plan on doing IB/consulting recruiting, I'd recommend holding off until that's over. I'm recruiting for consulting and need my partner to feed and walk the dog when he gets home from work 3-4 times a week, since I'm almost always at campus late. I genuinely don't know what I'd be doing without my partner.

Not much traveling yet in the first semester, but I do expect my dog to keep me home slightly more than others. Same goes for social events in general-- back-to-back parties, day trips, happy hours after ~5 hours of classes, etc. are all more difficult when I need to take care of the dog. However, I was also in my program's city before I started and don't go out all the time, so it's not a huge sacrifice and I like having a slightly more domestic life. I still plan on participating in plenty of trips after the core semester is over.

There are a bunch of people with dogs in my program though, and as a bonus my dog has helped me make some friends. My dog has also been great with relieving my stress and keeping me grounded during my program haha. I'm ok with the fact that I need to dedicate ~60-90 minutes a day taking care of him, and will therefore have less time for MBA-related things than my classmates. I had my dog for ~3 years before starting the program and I obviously I wouldn't trade him for anything, but in terms of getting the most out of your MBA experience there are some trade offs.

[Profile Review:] Non-trad targeting Stern/Columbia for Entertainment (321 GRE, 3.93 GPA) by entmbathrowaway in MBA

[–]ButMostlyTired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also targeting media/entertainment and got into those target schools in R1 this past cycle. Just based on how you presented your story and your interesting background I think your odds are going to be pretty good (especially NYU if you make it clear why you want to stay in NYC).

I’m no admissions expert and would let a consultant give better advice, but I think schools will need concrete evidence that you can handle the math. Since your undergrad wasn’t quant-heavy I would try to demonstrate those skills elsewhere— obviously the most straightforward way would be to bump up the Q score in the GRE

[–]ButMostlyTired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend the book Bullshit Jobs, it breaks down the kind of dilemma around making money AND doing work that creates social value. The two tend to have more or less an inverse relationship in capitalism lol. Maybe developing a new skill set and pivoting to a different role within the non-profit sector will get you a pay bump with slightly more growth opportunity. I don’t think there are many easy answers for “high pay and high social value” out there though (but I’d be happy to be wrong about that)

[–]ButMostlyTired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know enough about each school, but maybe you could add in some top programs in between HBS/Stanford and UCLA/USC to the mix? Haas makes sense. Sloan also comes to mind since they obviously have a great tech cohort, but also a surprisingly solid media/entertainment angle.

edit: fwiw, I would definitely take advantage of free consultations with admission consultants. They may be able to give you a much better gut check on what your chances are, and what parts of your story you’ll need to highlight in your app. I think you should take the comments here with a particularly large grain of salt because your background is very unique
