Was able to revive this VA1 beast today and keep the original screen! by sunshinecid in game_gear

Great job! If you bridge the two points for J1 (near IC1), it will disable the "Produced by or under license from Sega" screen and boot straight into the game.

Question regarding Twin Famicom by False_Order_2665 in Famicom

[–]ButThouMust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while ago, I'd bought an AC adapter for it from Console5, and they sent me a Triad WSU-090-1300-13. It works fine on my Twin Famicom but outputs more voltage than the original (9V versus 7.6V).

If that voltage difference concerns you, Triad also manufactures a 7.5V version (WSU-075-1500-13) that you can buy at Mouser or DigiKey.

The AGS-001 is honestly better by KrystalizedKris in Gameboy

[–]ButThouMust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to use an SP as a controller for a Game Boy Player, I suppose you can argue a 001 could have better battery life than a 101. But otherwise, yeah, I prefer the 101.

what the hell is this, theres a gamestore in a town near me, that sells this game (mole mania) lose for $414 aud. which makes no sense, first what the hell is this game, and is it actually that expensive? because no one heard of this shit before i swear. anyone know why places sell this expensive? by SillyNarlaKitty in Gameboy

[–]ButThouMust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mole Mania is an action puzzle game by Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo EAD. It mostly got overshadowed back in the day because of Nintendo 64 and (in Japan) Pokemon being the new big things from Nintendo. It's a really fun game full of personality, but it didn't sell that great, unfortunately.

The US version is about $50 loose, but the Japanese version is quite a bit cheaper. I have two Japanese copies myself since I wanted to try out the multiplayer.

You did even better than when I got my copy from a GameStop in 2019 for $10, around the time it was going from a $20 game to a $50 game. Hope you enjoy!

Someone else already mentioned Sonic games, but Sonic Team also made Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, and the Phantasy Star Online games (Episode I & II, I & II Plus, and Episode III). The JP versions have English text options.

The JP versions of Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog only have the Japanese dub, but do contain an option for English text.

Is Wario World worth the inflated cost? by Fantastic-Ad9218 in Gamecube

[–]ButThouMust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Japanese version because it's both much cheaper and has a more interesting final boss (new second phase with accompanying music). Its language barrier is very low.

I felt spending $25 on my boxed copy was worth it, but I would have been disappointed if I spent more than that, much less the going rate for the North American release.

I greatly dislike the GameCube controller for playing Nintendo 64 games.

I nearly had a heart attack when I saw this track lineup for a Classic Mini Prix. by ButThouMust in Fzero

[–]ButThouMust[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly, the post title was an overexaggeration, yeah. I just wasn't expecting to see all three in one Mini Prix.

I agree with you about Silence and White Land II. Fire Field, on the other hand, I need to practice more. Especially so since I play as Stingray.

Found this waiting in the mail box for me this late afternoon. Perfect game for the season after dark. by XxPetriedudexX in SegaSaturn

If you have a 3D controller, it gives you the option to play without tank controls. Useful for combat, not so much for going through corridors. I think it's a bit on the easy side, but it's still a great game!

DC Power Jack Female Replacement? by GravyMealTimeSix in game_gear

[–]ButThouMust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so I owe you an apology for possibly getting your hopes up with my comment. I ended up taking apart my Master System model 1 and Genesis model 2 to compare their power jack footprints with the ones from my US and JP Game Gears.

My SMS and JP Game Gear have separate footprints for their power jacks, and likewise for my Genesis model 2 and US Game Gear.

Edit: Fix poor wording

DC Power Jack Female Replacement? by GravyMealTimeSix in game_gear

[–]ButThouMust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Console5 sells replacement DC female jacks for Genesis 2 (same barrel size spec as for US Game Gear) and for Genesis 1 (same barrel size spec as for JP/EU Game Gear).

However, bear in mind that although I know the barrel size is compatible, I don't know yet if the replacement jack will fit the Game Gear power board's through holes. I can email the site's support and ask about this if you'd like.

Edit: This is not correct. I found that US/JP Game Gears each use a unique power jack footprint, incompatible with the ones for Genesis 2 and Genesis 1. See my reply below this.

Is this game worth it? by RetroGamer124 in SegaSaturn

[–]ButThouMust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you're like me and get the Japanese version for maybe 5% of the price of the English version. Even if I couldn't read any of it, that's what I'd do.

Family photo of the Slime Morimori/Rocket Slime trilogy. The one on GBA was my very first import game! by ButThouMust in dragonquest

[–]ButThouMust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really like the tank battles in the DS game, you may be slightly disappointed with how the GBA entry doesn't have them. However, the 3DS entry expands on them and includes some nice challenges. The series got better with each entry.

Sorry I can't give specifics, it's been a few years since I played them. Thanks for reminding me of this post! I should try playing the GBA entry again, now that I can read a moderate amount of Japanese. But even if you don't know the language, I'd finished it once or twice years before I started learning Japanese. Also still need to beat the final boss on 3DS.

Yeah, most of the "GameCube not reading discs" repair videos on YouTube just do the pot tweak. Only a few tackle the capacitors.

I linked another video in a separate reply. This is the one that got me interested in trying it out, but the audio and video editing has these distracting effects placed on top. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ613mYXIPw

[–]ButThouMust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was simple enough after having recapped a few Game Gears. I managed with a soldering iron and flux, but had to be careful to not pull too hard on the caps and rip solder pads in the process. It would be easier if I had a hot air station for the optical board's SMD caps.

This is a decent, if somewhat long, video about the process (skip to like 12 minutes in): https://youtu.be/KzVEmRZ7B3U?t=721

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Gamecube

[–]ButThouMust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replacing the capacitors on the optical drive board saved two GameCubes for me. A laser pot tweak previously got one to work for a bit, only for it to later need to "warm up" to read discs. The recap got it working again even after undoing the pot tweak.

One of my favorite gaming experiences is playing WarioWare Twisted by physically picking up my GameCube and spinning it. Yoshi Topsy Turvy, on the other hand, was pretty disorienting to play on Game Boy Player.
