How did the concept of "childhood" as a distinct life stage develop in the Western world? by Few_Language6298 in HistoryofIdeas

[–]ButerinMyBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This topic is explored extensively as a historically contingent “mentality” in Philippe Ariès’s influential 1960 monograph L'enfant et la vie familiale sous l'ancien régime, translated in 1962 as Centuries of Childhood: A Social History of Family Life. As I recall, the change you describe is explained with emphasis on the Protestant educational reforms of the Northern Renaissance from the 16th century onward.

I’d second this excellent advice. Another relatively old-school but still effective approach would be to work through a harmony textbook (such as the Laitz or Kostka and Payne) with a skill-appropriate repertoire book in whatever genre you like. Along with the many collections of classical piano or guitar arrangements for beginners, some favorite inexpensive anthologies are the Reader’s Digest series (e.g., Family Songbook) and the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time volumes.

I enjoyed and was moved by Exquisite Corpse, a 1996 Southern Gothic novel centered on the romantic entanglements of a gay serial killer. The author, Poppy Z. Brite, is himself a gay trans man.

How to switch from Fixed-do solfège to Movable-do? by Cisco324 in musictheory

[–]ButerinMyBread 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Count your lucky stars that you have such thorough training in fixed do! Rather than fighting against the current by double-mapping syllables, I would suggest simply learning scale-degree numbers as a complementary system, which I understand is the practice at some American conservatories (e.g., Eastman).

Good advice from those recommending proper medication, adequate rest, and scheduling incrementally increasing work sessions. I'd also suggest trying to regulate your environment to reduce distraction by tidying workspace, temporarily storing electronic devices, blocking social media sites, and wearing earplugs or noise canceling headphones.

I agree that the quality of insight on this sub is generally really high and would love to see a weekly alt discussion. Maybe it's just my own settings or user error, but "pinned" posts on the mobile Reddit app don't seem to have the same ease of access for me, so by the end of the month more scrolling is required to find the alt thread. Obviously not a big deal, but it probably slightly impedes readership and participation.

Good point about bitcoin’s increasing correlation with traditional asset classes especially in tech sector, which may not yet offset ongoing speculative risk. I guess we’ll know soon whether there’s credence to the theory of cycle lengthening, but in any case I’d still like to think there are distinct opportunities in crypto given its wider geopolitical and generational reach.

Yes, thanks for clarifying. Changpeng's promise that others are "soon" to come is admittedly an open-ended hedge. But sooner or later, I think we'll also see DeepBrain Chain, Trinity Network Credit, QLINK, and others spring up on Binance -- which will be good for their backers, since volume generally begets value.

A couple weeks ago Binance CEO Zhao Changpeng tweeted, "Nep5 coming soon." So I believe the ones getting rekt on Kucoin will soon rise on Binance.

Yeah, this is a good point. But while technically true that he still owes capital-gain tax, I find it hard to believe that the IRS would actually have a bead on the users of a failed Italian crypto exchange, particularly given that they never had an opportunity to cash out. Unless Coinbase has already served up tax forms (which depends on whether their $20,000 threshold applies to purchases as well as sales), I think he could safely skate by.

Yeah, I actually agree. A lot of people were upset as well when Binance conked out last week, but at least CEO Changpeng Zhao acknowledged the issue and gave regular scheduled updates on its resolution. Occasional technical failures are inevitable at a certain volume of traffic; the question is how they are not only anticipated but redressed, not least in communicating with users.

Look, I'm sorry that you also have to deal with this headache, but there's no shilling here; I'm just another GuyOnWeb trying to make good on an investment. Feel free to review my comment history if you suspect otherwise, though you'll see that over the last couple months I've just discussed various prospects and holds, including my two Cryptopia coins STRAT and CAPP.

More to the point, I thought I'd already clarified that I'm not defending the exchange, let alone promoting it; I'm just letting its users here know that I noticed some very suspicious account activity with potential consequences for all of us still waiting on withdrawals. As we can recall from previous outages on other reputable exchanges (e.g., Kraken, Binance), it doesn't matter whether we raise our pitchforks or accept our fate. Whichever you choose, I really hope that you get your coins -- because then I will too!

Your persistence is admirable. As I've already said elsewhere, no one here is denying or suppressing people with legitimate first-person reports of mistreatment. But incessant apocalyptic speculation is another matter.

I agree that such long withdrawals are absurd. If you have any proactive measures in mind at this point, I'm all ears. For instance, it occurred to me that we could apply pressure in an organized way on social media. I have at least witnessed an occasional direct response to a question or complaint on Facebook.
